Luccien
Hello, my name is Luccien. My animal id is #217287. I am a desexed male black brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/22/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLuccien is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Luccien was brought into the care centers as a stray. Upon intake he displayed social behavior, loose body and a wagging tail, as well as some rope reactivity as he began to leash bite. In the care centers he has been observed and reported to bite the leash while on walks, while exiting and returning to kennel, and is not easily redirectable. His leash biting has progressively intensified, and it always escalates to mouthiness or mounting. While jumping up and leash biting, Luccien has been observed to mouth handlers arms, legs, and jacket. He has tolerated all handling in the care centers and has social moments with handler. Medically, apparently Luccien is healthy.

Summary (5):: 2/3/25: Luccien displays the same behavior as yesterday and was kennel fighting at the dog next to him on the way to the yard. 2/2/25: Luccien is siting at the front of his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed and he pulled hard to the back yard. Due to really having to use the bathroom, he pulled hard into the 2nd play to relieve himself. He then explored all around with consistent sniffing. He wasn’t interested in taking treats and would spit them out. He was not interested in toys either. He was able to be taken back to his kennel with no issues.
Summary (6):: 2/1/25: Luccien is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He barks and jumps at the kennel door as handler attempts to leash him. Handler attempts to distract him with treats but is unsuccessful, however he is successfully leashed and brought out to the street for his walk. Luccien pulls hard on the street and will gallop forward and random points after sniffing around for a bit. Luccien at one point dashes forward and jumps in the air while turning, he whips his head loosening the leash and catches it in his mouth, landing in a play bow position with the leash in his mouth. The leash is very loose when Luccien lands so handler calmly brings Luccien a treat bringing it close to his snout. He takes the treat and while distracted, his leash is adjusted and secured before handler continues the walk. Luccien is tossed more treats throughout his walk but does not accept them. He continues to pull forward after sniffing and will stop frequently to sniff on the street. Luccien uses the bathroom while outside and is brought back to the shelter after walking for a while more. He is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 1/29/25: Luccien is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping up as handler introduces leash to the kennel but is leashed after two attempts. He exits kennel and pulls moderately out to the street with handler. Once outside he begins jumping on handler but stops on his own after a moment. Handler walks across the street with Luccien and he begins to again jump on handler, as well as beginning to leash bite. He holds onto the leash in his mouth but does not shake it and lets go on his own shortly after. He pulls moderately and stops to sniff areas on the street. When Luccien sees people or bikes passing him, he generally will attempt to approach them but is kept away by handler. He ignores treats tossed for him and towards the end of the walk slows down and pulls only slightly. He is brought back inside and allows himself to be clipped, due to his kennel not being finished handler waits outside the room with Luccien as the kennel is cleaned. Luccien is offered more treats but ignores them and pulls hard towards a dog he sees passing in the hall. He pulls to the point where he stops and throws up, after which he finally settles. He is returned to kennel and interaction is ended. 1/27/2025: k9 Behavior requested to start giving Luccien his AM medication. 1/27/25: Luccien is at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the yard. He pulls hard while on leash and is not receptive to treats. While in the pen Luccien sniffs around then begins jumping up on the handler. This behavior is not easily redirectable using treats or squeakie sounds. Luccien then begins to jump up and bite the leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Luccien was able to be returned to kennel without further issue.
Summary (7):: 1/25/25- ACS staff reported when exiting the driveway Luccien started to leash bite. When the handler pulled the leash away, he started to jump up on them and bite/ release at their coat. Luccien caught their arm but no broken skin, just left a bruise. 1/18/25: It was reported by staff that Luccien will jump onto handler and towards the leash. 1/4/25: Lucciem is reported to have become over-aroused when walking with a volunteer and mounted them intensely. Lucciem was reported to have been constantly jumping on hander during their walk, handler had a plastic poop bag in their hands which they put in their pocket to have more control of the leash. Lucciem began to fixate on the pocket that the handler placed the bag in, and began jumping and pawing at the handlers coat pocket. This progressed to mounting, as Lucciem began to grab onto handlers pants leg and scratches at handlers legs intensely, while handler attempts to toss treats to distract. Handler is able to remove Lucciem and a Canine Behavior Specialist arrives to assist. CBS takes Lucciem from the volunteer and immediately begins offering treats but Lucciem is uninterested. Handler clips Lucciem and returns him to kennel without further issue. 12/24/24- Lukey Luke is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, when handler was attempting to leash Lukey would try to push himself out of his kennel. When the leash finally got on him, he backed out of it. Handler used a treat lure and a couple more attempts and he was finally leashed. He was taken for a street walk, he would chase pigeons and pull hard to various spots to sniff. He is social with handler and would take treats gently. Throughout the walk when handler called to him, he would jump on handler seeking attention and at one point attempted to bite the leash once. When a MOP passed him, he would pull towards them with a loose and wiggly body. He was taken for his assessment where he was social with handlers and was jumping up on them. Handler used a treat lure to releash and when returning to his room, he planted. Handler applied pressure to the leash and he started to walk forward into the room. He went into kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Luccien so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and rope reactivity we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Luccien has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manners. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: While jumping up and biting the leash Luccien has been observed to mouthing the handler's arms, and jacket. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Luccien puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Leash Biting: Luccien has been observed to bite the leash while on walks. This behavior is not easily redirectable. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
