At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Giselle
Giselle is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Giselle is a senior diabetic cat. We are unable to manage diabetes in the shelter effectively. Giselle should be placed in a home that is prepared to medically manage her diabetes long-term, as this is most often a life-long condition.

Griselda
Griselda is at risk due to behavior concerns. Her owner reported that she bit and held onto a dog after growling when owner attempted to introduce her to another dog. In the care center, Griselda is observed to lunge at dogs and small animals. Griselda is social, allowing pets and seeking attention from staff. Previously, Griselda was observed to hypersalivating, licking and attempting to the bite the kennel glass. Staff moved her back into the kennel room and saw some improvement. However, recently, Griselda has begun to hard pant and lick at her kennel bars. Griselda is now exhibiting more intense behaviors, including jumping up, barking loudly, and trying to engage in kennel fights with the neighboring dog. She has also started jumping up repeatedly on her handler, and this behavior is proving difficult to redirect. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment, Griselda is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the shelter environment. Medically, Griselda is apparently healthy.

Papa Gato
Papa Gato is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Holding room. He is now displaying signs of aggression, boredom and frustration. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Seven

Seven is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Misu is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. Madara
Madara is at risk due to behavior concerns. Madara arrived at the care center as a stray. Police reported that Madara was anxious, growling and barking when he was found. Upon intake Madara, hard barked, stared and bared teeth at staff. In the care center, Madara continued to display fearful defensive behaviors through whale eyeing, growling and baring teeth at staff. Madara allowed to be leashed when offered wet food but remained hypervigilant on his walks. Throughout his stay Madara has been noted to become more social with handlers and allow handling with loose body. Medically, Madara was treated at intake for an ear infection. Madara is receiving treatment for CIDRC.

Bubba
Bubba is at risk due to his deterioration in care. Although Bubba has been highly social and engaging outside of his kennel, he is becoming increasingly mouthy, jumping up and mouthing at hands persistently on walks. On one occasion, Bubba began lunging at unfamiliar staff which caused him to trip and fall; he then redirected and nipped at the handler. Bubba does enjoy a variety of toys, enrichment items games, and treats. Medically, Bubba is overweight.

Morrison
Morrison is on the at-risk list for for medical reasons - Morrison is a senior cat with an abdominal mass. He is clinically stable, but requires additional diagnostics to confirm a diagnosis of neoplasia. Some cases of intestinal neoplasia in cats can be treatable, others carry poor prognoses. Palliative care is also an option.

Lily
Lily is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Lily has a history in her previous adoptive home of aggressing towards the resident adopter in her previous home and was reported to have been circling one of her adopters, hard barking, and growling at them and then biting/being mouthy. Lily in care, is also not doing well in kennel, starting to bark and wail in her kennel. Medically, Lily is Apparently healthy.

Lizzy
Lizzy is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Lizzy has been highly social and playful in care, she was returned to the Care Centers due to behavior concerns in her adopter's home including a bite incident, resource guarding, mouthiness, and hyperactivity. The bite did not break the skin or draw blood. Medically, Lizzy is apparently healthy.

Storm
Storm is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Storm has a bite history with another dog in her previous home, a dog about Storm's size bit the owner on the leg. Storm bit the dog on the neck, and shook. Storm in her previous home is also noted to guard her food and toys, hovering and growling over them when approached. Storm in care has been social with staff, but has been shown to be on-leash reactive aswell. Medically, Storm is apparently healthy.

Cliff
Cliff is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cliff has been struggling within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Cliff has began to leash bite while on walks intermittently throughout his time in the care center and has made contact on a staff members arm, although Cliff can be refocused with treats it is difficult to consistently walk him safely. Medically, Cliff is apparently healthy.

Romero is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Romero is an adult diabetic cat. We are unable to manage his diabetes in the shelter effectively. Romero should be placed in a home that is prepared to medically manage his diabetes long-term, as this is most often a life-long condition.

Kiva
Kiva is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He was surrendered to the care center by his owner, who described him as social, affectionate, and playful. Upon intake, Kiva was jumping on staff with force and was mouthy. Additionally, Kiva is observed to be on leash reactive, where he fixates on and barks at dogs in view. Recently, his behavior has escalated, with Kiva being observed jumping towards and mouthing another staff member's ankle. Despite daily enrichment efforts, Kiva is struggling to adjust to the shelter environment. Medically, Kiva recently recovered from CIRDC.

Trafalgar
Trafalgar has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She has multiple issues that are keeping her in a weakened state. She has marked anemia; she's emaciated; she has a area of consolidation in her chest that may be pneumonia or a mass. She is eating but continues to be in a fragile state. She needs care, diagnostics and support that we cannot provide.

Cloudy Mushroom

Cloudy Mushroom is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He arrived at the care center as a stray, and during intake, he growled and snapped at staff when handled. While in the care center, Cloudy has been social with staff, allowing petting, but he has also displayed challenging behaviors. He takes treats with excessive pressure, resource guards, and has a poor kennel presence. Recently, Cloudy has been observed scratching and scraping his teeth on the kennel walls. Additionally, there was an incident where he pushed out of his kennel and, when restrained by his collar, jumped up and bit and released a staff member’s elbow. No skin was broken. Despite daily enrichment efforts, Cloudy is not adapting well to the shelter environment. Medically, Cloudy is apparently healthy.

Loyalty
Loyalty is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Loyalty has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in shelter. She has been noted to growl, snarl, and bare teeth towards staff. During her previous stay in shelter Loyalty presented the same behaviors. Loyalty has been observed to become receptive to treats from familiar handlers. Medically Loyalty has periodontal disease.

Rey
Rey is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Rey has been observed to cage fight intensely and be fearful during his stay in care. Rey has been observed immediately pull towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Rey also shows high reactivity towards other dogs in the shelter. While out on walks Rey is observed to be fearful with a low hanging tail and with his ears back. Rey is noted to be receptive to treats. Medically, Rey is healthy.

Titan

Titan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Titan is struggling within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Titan in care has been stressed in his kennel, pulling his water bucket in and having a poor kennel precense at times, jumping and hard barking at his door. Titan also has a history of snapping when his neck his touched in care. Medically, Titan is apparently healthy.

Apollo
Apollo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Apollo in care has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment, and continues to deteriorate within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Apollo in care has been unable to settle outside during interaction with select staff members, and in kennel hypersalivates creating a pool of saliva beneath him. Apollo in care has also escalated to lunging at unfamiliar staff members in the shelter hallways. Apollo presents as social with only select staff members. Medically, Apollo is apparently healthy.

Thunder

Thunder is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Thunder has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly fearful during his stay in care. While Thunder is accepting of treats, he does not initiate any form of further interaction or solicit attention. During his intake, Thunder did escalate to hard barking and growling at staff, but during his stay, he remains avoidant and chooses places to hide or seeks an exit once removed from his kennel. Medically, Thunder has CIRDC.

Simba
Simba is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Simba has displayed selectivity with handlers during his stay in care. Initially, Simba was not allowed for handling and escalated to higher-level warnings (lunging, hard barking, growling, snapping, baring teeth) when removed from the kennel and remained highly fearful and avoidant during interactions. With a slow approach and positive reinforcement, Simba has warmed up to select handlers. He solicits attention, treats, and engages with enrichment games. But when introduced to the novel staff, Simba reverts to defensive behaviors and has escalated to biting their gloves when attempting to leash him. Medically, Simba has alopecia due to fleas and dental disease.
