Animal Profile

Ms. Cool

Hello, my name is Ms. Cool. My animal id is #212912. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/22/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Ms. Cool is at risk due to behavior concerns. Ms. Cool was observed to be reactive towards other dogs, engaging in intense kennel fighting and lunging at them in the pens, but she is easily redirected with treats. She was also reported to mount staff. Outside, Ms. Cool is highly social with staff, actively engaging in training and leaning into pets. Medically, Ms. Cool is apparently healthy.

Summary:: 11/5/24: Ms. Cool greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. She then hard barks.

Summary (4):: 1/13/25- Ms. Cool is laying down with a soft body when handler approaches her kennel, she slowly gets up and is easily leashed. She is taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. She does zoomies then comes to handler and sits, she is rewarded with a treat that she takes gently. She does zoomies again and jumps into handler. As she jumps onto handler she then tries to mount. Handler gave her the command to sit and she followed it, she was given a treat. Handler tosses a frisbee and she follows it, she sniffs it then comes back to handler and jumps on them again. Handler has her sit again and given a treat. Handler goes to sit on the bench and Ms. Cool follows them, she sits by the handler watching birds fly across the pen. She allows handler to pet her hand, neck, chest and back. Periodically she is given a treat while sitting on the bench with the handler. A couple of birds land in the pen and she jumps off the bench to chase them, after they fly away she returns to the bench. Handler gets up and walks around the pen, Ms. Cool follows them. When they stop walking she sits and takes a treat. She again jumps onto handler then goes into mounting their leg, handler gives the command down and Ms. Cool follows it. She is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issues.

Summary (5):: 1/9/25 (Trainer Note): Ms. Cool is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed, removed from kennel, and taken to the yard. She immediately relieves herself and gets the zoomies when entering the pen. After a couple seconds of random frenetic running, handler recalls her, and she runs towards handler puts sits politely in front of handler awaiting her reward. Handler placed a snuffle mat near the perimeter of the fence, where other dogs were visible to Ms. Cool. Treats are tossed onto snuffle mat and she is fully engaged. She will occasionally lift her head up, orient herself towards the dog, but then continue working on the snuffle mat, at that moment, a reward marker (Yes!) was used, and more high value treats were tossed onto the mat. After 5-10 minutes, handler removed snuffle mat and had Ms. Cool stay in the same spot, cued a sit, and waited for her to turn toward the neighboring dog. She would stare for a couple seconds but ultimately return her attention to handler. An enthusiastic reward marker (Yes!) was used as well as a jackpot reward (big treat scatter/higher value treats). This exercise was repeated 5 times and handler decided to "Stick" (Push, Drop, Stick method). Verbal cue "Watch" will be incorporated next training session. Ms. Cool was returned to her kennel without cage fighting or issue. She hopped right in without being prompted and she was given a licki matt for enrichment.

Summary (6):: 1/2/25: Ms. Cool is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed without issue and taken to the street for her walk. Handler offers some treats to her but she does not accept them. She walks slightly in front of handler and pulls moderately throughout her walk. Ms. Cool will pull towards dogs she sees in the street and is difficult to redirect when she spots them. She responds to the squeaker but is less consistent when she sees dogs. When walking past people on the street she will occasionally attempt to approach but is kept away by handler. After a while she is brought back to the shelter and allows clipping before being brought back without issue. 12/12/24: Ms.cool is standing aloof at the front of the kennel as handler approaches. When handler goes to leash she jumps and treats were used to leash. As soon as Ms.cool steps out the kennel room she turns towards the pop up crate by the door where the dog is sleeping. Ms.cool begins pulling hard in the driveway, handler test to see if she can be slip harness by touching the end of their lead to the side of her body but she became frantic, whale eyeing, pinned ears and cowered to the ground with a tuck tail. Handler did not use a slip lead and continued her walk with Ms.cool pulling hard. Ms. cool leaned into being petted and allowed her head and body to be touched. She was returned to kennel with ease. 12/05/24 (Trainer Note): Ms. Cool is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body and barking as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and brought out to the yard. As she passes by other kennels and dogs, she pulls very hard and becomes tense. She is kept on leash in the yard. She began running around the pen, almost knocking into the handler. Handler tosses treats and Ms. Cool begins to consume them. Handler begins to play the pattern popcorn game between a snuffle mat and a slow feeder. Ms. Cool is very engaged and receptive. She notices other dogs in the neighboring pens and begins to hard bark and lunge, but she is very redirectable with treats and is easily recalled. She sits on approach between every interaction. Handler begins hand target training, utilizing a fist instead of a palm. Exercise was repeated multiple times, Ms. Cool remained completely engaged with handler. She was returned to kennel without issue and given a snuffle mat for extra enrichment in kennel. 11/29/24: Ms. Cool is reported to begin excessively mounting handlers when off leash. She is not easily redirected with treats or toys.

Summary (7):: 11/17/24 (Trainer Note): Ms. Cool is laying down in the middle of her pop-up crate with a soft body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and brought out of the crate. She pulls hard towards the other pop-up crates as she is walked by, but is redirectable with treats. She is highly treat motivated. She is taken out to the street, where she maintains a loose body, bouncy trot, often checks in with handler, and continues to pull moderately-hard. She is returned to crate, pulling hard towards the hallway crates when being returned. - TK 11/17/24: Ms. Cool is reported by ACS staff to intensely kennel fight as she is walked past pop-up crates. Potential for redirection. 11/11/24- Ms. Cool is laying down with a soft body at the back of her pop up crate, she comes to the front and is easily leashed. She has a slight pull towards another dog in a pop up crate in the hallway with a neutral body, handler tosses a treat. She comes over to eat the treat and follows the command to sit gentling taking another treat while waiting for the elevator. She is taken for a street walk where she moderately pulls, handler calls to her and she comes over to take a treat then will hop forward pulling. She passes people seeking attention, handler calls to her in passing and she takes treats. Once she relieves herself, she walks on a looser leash. She allows handler to pet her head, chin, chest, neck and back. She sniffs around while walking back to the building. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 11/2/24: It was reported by staff that Ms. Cool growled at someone who was in the elevator with her and her handler. 10/24/24: Ms Cool is standing in the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats and takes them gently. She is leashed and brought to the street for her walk, during which she uses the bathroom while outside and is observed to be jumpy for a moment while out on the street, she settles by herself after a moment however. She pulls moderately and ignores a dog she sees in passing during her walk. After a while she is brought to the behavior office for an assessment. She allows handling and collaring but distracts easily, she is highly treat motivated and takes treats either being tossed to her or given by hand. She is re-leashed and returned to kennel after her assessment without issue.

Summary:: Tense body for exam. Growled when auscultated. Cool tolerated tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: Ms. Cool is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Ms. Cool.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. No Cats: Due to lunging and chasing cats while on leash we recommend a home with no cats. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Ms. Cool's previous owner states that she will jump up nonstop while on leash. During her stay in shelter Cool has been observed to occasionally jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Social Hyperarousal: When off leash Ms. Cool has been observed to become quickly over aroused and begin mouthing handlers. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or toys. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Ms. Cool to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Ms. Cool should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Ms. Cool. Please see handout on Arousal. Handling Sensitivity: Ms. Cool's previous owner states that she will bark when restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Ms. Cool to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Ms. Cool's previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises such as storms, thunder, fireworks, and arguments. During her medical exam Ms. Cool was observed to growl when the handler auscultated. During her stay in the care center Ms. Cool has also been observed to growl towards other handlers while on leash. It is important to move slowly with Ms. Cool, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Ms. Cool has been observed to lunge towards the other dogs that are in pop up crates. While reacting it is reported that she will turn towards the handler with an open mouth. This behavior is able to be redirected using treats. Ms. Cool will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
