Pre-Screener Form

Bubbles is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. She has been intensely fearful in the care center, becoming conflicted and tense during interactions, with a tucked tail, lip licking, whale eye, and muzzle puckering when attempted to be touched. During handling, she stiffens, head-whips, and shows increased tension with more exuberant contact. She remains highly stressed in the care center following with a tucked tail and whale eyes, and huffing with tense posture when startled by knocks. When a toy is introduced, she escalates to growling, snapping, and biting toward the dummy hand before it makes contact. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/20/25 Bubbles is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Bubbles approaches the gate appearing aloof, relcutant to pay the male dog any mind. As she is guided into his pen, she begins to displace, sniffing around the pen, reluctant to approach the male dog. As he begins hard barking, she becomes nervous, creating more distance visibly appearing avoidant, seeking an exit. Bubbles is returned to kennel after the male dog, concluding the interaction.

Summary (7):: 11/26/25: Bubbles is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body, slowly wagging her tail and allowing to be leashed with no issue. Bubbles is taken outside and will approach with baby talk, but when pet becomes very stiff and tense, and the handler steps due to her sudden stiffening. Bubbles appears conflicted, wanting to be around the staff member but becoming overwhelmed during interaction. Bubbles pulls moderately on the walk and is returned to kennel after the walk with no issue. 11/20/25: Bubbles is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls on the way to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and would disengage and sniff around. She has no interest in approaching the other dog when the gate is opened and would sniff around and avoid the dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She refuses to return back to her kennel and has to be muscled inside to go in. 11/19: As staff approached kennel, Bubbles had a loose body and low wagging tail. When spoken to in a soft voice, Bubbles jumped up on the door soliciting pets and attempting to lick staff's hand. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Resource guarding: During the Resource guarding portion of her handling assessment, Bubbles began to growl and snap, and bite before the dummy hand touched the toy. During assessments, she consistently presents with tense body language, tucked tail, whale eyes, lip licking, and muzzle puckering. While she will approach handlers and can take treats gently, she quickly becomes conflicted and stiffens, indicating discomfort with close interaction. . To manage guarding, avoid removing items directly; instead, use trade-up techniques with high-value treats, feed and provide resources in low-traffic areas, and implement gradual desensitization and counterconditioning around valued items. Consistent, low-pressure handling and clear protocols are essential to reduce stress and prevent escalation. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Resource guarding.
