Suki
Hello, my name is Suki. My animal id is #219636. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSuki is at risk due to behavioral concerns at the care center. He often barks and growls, especially in his kennel and when approached for leashing. Previously during his past stay he has exhibited similar behaviors, including growling, lunging, and snapping at staff. Suki has exhibited sensitivity to touch, stiffening, recoiling, or low growling when petting exceeds his comfort level. In a controlled environment, he has shown moments of social behavior, leaning into handlers and allowing light petting, but these interactions remain inconsistent. Medically Suki is considered Obese.

In a controlled environment, Suki has demonstrated the ability to decompress, leaning into familiar handlers for petting and showing some affiliative behavior. However, he remains sensitive to handling and unfamiliar stimuli, occasionally hard staring and growling at those he does not know. Given his high fear, avoidance, and reactivity toward strangers, Suki is available for rescue through one of our New Hope partner.

Summary:: According to Suki's previous owner(s), Suki has interacted with different dogs and is often described as will hard bark, growl, or lunge at other dogs, when they interact, but will typically walk right by. 02/19/25: When off leash at the Care Center Suki is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Suki's approaches with a neutral frame. Suki scents the novel female before quickly loosing interest. Suki walks away from the gate displacement scenting. Suki eventually returns scents again before quickly loosing interest again. Suki becomes aloof. Both dogs are removed from the pen concluding the interaction. Due to Suki head whipping during leashing a face to face greet was not conducted.
Summary (4):: 02/19/25 When approaching, Suki sits upright, remaining still. The handler attempts to leash and Suki rises, backing up, vocalizing at handler. Suki will come forward, pressing his head against the kennel door, allowing the handler to leash him. They proceed outside for a walk. Suki displays a neutral frame, trotting along side the handler. In some cases, he will pull, often to explore and mark a spot. Suki and the handler's walk commences before returning back to the facility. Once approaching the building, the handler will attempt to pet Suki, rubbing his back and he begins to low growl. The handler immediately stops and proceeds inside the building. Suki will enter his kennel, sit in an up right position once again in front of his kennel door. As the handler speaks to him, he begins to low growl. 02/19/25: Suki stands at the front of his kennel and will demand bark at the handler upon approach. When the handler attempts to leash him, Suki actively avoids the leash but is eventually secured. Once leashed, Suki is escorted to the play yard, where he exhibits signs of touch sensitivity when the handler attempts to place a drag leash on him, stiffening and recoiling slightly upon contact. When another dog enters the yard, Suki maintains a neutral body posture, showing no signs of tension or engagement. He remains aloof, choosing to walk away rather than interact with his playmate. Suki will be brought back to his kennel safely with no issues.
Summary (5):: 02/18/25 Suki is in the front of his kennel, barking excessively at the handler. Suki's barks are more of alarmed like bark, cautious and weary of the handler's lead. Suki will continue to do so, while easing forward, then jumping further back into kennel. Suki will come forward with his head down, conflicted on whether he wanted to be leashed, that way he can exit his kennel. Suki indicates he would like to come out and after tossing the loop of the lead the first time, the handler is successful on the second. They proceed outside with a handler spotting. The three will exit the facility as Suki's pulls his way outside. He will relieve himself and proceed walking. Suki will maintain a moderate pace with a neutral frame all throughout the walk. Suki is returned to the facility where he will calmly enter the building as well as trotting over to his kennel, entering willingly. 2/17/25 (PM): Suki was sleeping on kuranda bed when handler approached. Handler crouched down and offered treats. Suki began barking along with the other dogs in the room. Handler remained crouched at spoke to Suki in a soft voice. He displayed fearful defensive behavior by barking while backing up onto kuranda bed. Suki seemed to perk up when handler used the words "outside" and "walk." He allowed handler to leash him and remained still until handler was able to get the loop over an ear it was stuck on. Once secure, Suki walked to the BA room where he was kept on a drag leash. He greeted a familiar handler and accepted brief pets. Handlers opted to take Suki outside and he walked to the yard without issue. He was returned to kennel with ease. (AM): Suki is standing at the front of kennel with a slightly tense body as handler approaches. He begins barking as the lead is presented and after a couple attempts is leashed. Suki exits kennel with a neutral frame and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. He spends time marking along the room. Handler offers him a variety of toys and treats but he shows no interest. Handler sits at one of the computers and Suki will sit next to them, leaning into their leg lightly. Handler calls his name, and he will lean his head toward them, allowing light petting at the top of his head. After his session, Suki is returned to kennel safely.
Summary (6):: 02/15/25: Suki is sitting at the front of kennel with a slightly tense frame as handler approaches. Handler offers him treats through the kennel door, but he shows no interest. Handler slowly cracks open the kennel door and presents their lead which Suki will quickly back away from. Handler calls to him to lure him forward for leashing, but he remains avoidant. When handler places the lead on the top of Suki's neck to let it fall into place, he drops his head low to avoid leashing. He hard barks at handler but will still approach kennel front as handler resets their leash. After a few minutes, Suki is leashed and readily exits kennel. He pulls hard to the Canine Behavior Office where he is kept on handler's lead and explores at his own pace. Handler sits down and Suki will approach, standing close to handler and allows light intermittent petting along his side. He continues to loosen and settle and will sit next to handler, hip rolled, leaning into their leg. Suki accepts petting along his head and neck with a loose frame. Handler notices Suki's collar is a bit tight, so they unclip it, loosen it, and place it back on with no issue. A third handler enters the room and Suki remains neutral, next to handler. He begins scenting the portion of the lead in their hands and snuffling into it to scent further. Handler stands up and Suki jumps up towards the lead to scent it further. He jumps up multiple times to scent the lead (does not leash bite) and is not able to be redirected with toys or treats. Handler walks him around the room, and he shakes off and settles. Suki is returned to kennel safely. 2/13/25: Suki is at the front of the kennel sitting down in his kennel, low growling at the handler. Suki will remain seated, hard stare at the handler and begin to growl louder as the handler lingers. Suki is left alone for the morning due to his high FAS.
Summary (7):: 6/22/23: Suki comes forward when handlers approach. He is double leashed using cheese as a lure. Once the leashes are on and the kennel door is opened, Suki stands at the front peeking his head out but does not step out of the kennel. Handlers try more cheese to lure him out, they call to him in a high-pitched voice but he still does not step out. After a few minutes, handlers cease efforts and close the kennel door. They try to retrieve the leashes using a hook but Suki growls and hard barks at it. The leashes are left to fall off naturally. 6/21/23: Suki stiffens, growls loudly, and hard stares at the front of his kennel when approached. 6/20/23 When approaching Suki at the front of his kennel, he is laying down at the front, low growling. As handler begin to offer him treats he begins to readily eat. Suki allows for handlers to place both leashes over his head, when the kennel door is opened he hesitates initially but then slowly walks out. Suki is led to the play yard, he remains tense throughout, keeping his distance from both handlers. He sniffs briefly and relieves himself. After some time, he is returned to kennel without issue, hook is used to remove leashes. 6/19/23: Prior to both handlers approaching his kennel, Suk was at the front eating cheese one handler was offering to him. When both handlers visit his kennel, he remains neutral bodied and does not eat cheese or other high value treats. He begins low growling and stops briefly while handlers add two leashed for safety. He comes out easily and is taken to the yard where he is aloof with handlers, occasionally sniffing one of them. He looks at one of the handlers when they call his name in an excited tone. He goes back to exploring his surroundings. He is returned to kennel without issue and hooks are used to remove the leashes. 6/18/23: Suki is laying at the front of the kennel when approached. He looks up at handler hard staring at them with a tense body and begins to growl loudly while baring teeth at handler. Interaction is ended out of concern for his stress levels.

We recommend an adult-only home for Suki at this time. No cats- in the prior home it is reported that Suki will hard bark, growl, or lunge at cats Place with a New Hope partner- Suki owner brought him to QACC due to the lord and tenants no longer want the dog in the building. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- Suki is reported in prior home in 2023 that he will bark and growl when taking toy/object away from him. To address Suki's resource guarding, start by teaching him the "drop it" command using high-value treats. Gradually practice taking objects from him, rewarding him each time he releases the item without growling or barking. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Suki has been described by his previous owner as a dog who may become uncomfortable, bark, growl, or lunge toward strangers. Suki has remained tense and has been observed to growl in the presence of humans in the care center. He will also startled or woken from sleep. To help Suki become more comfortable around strangers, use desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Handling/touch sensitivity- In the prior home in 2023 it is reported in Suki prior home that he is afraid, will bark/growl/snap when getting nails trimmed. For Suki's touch sensitivity, especially during nail trims, start by gently handling his paws and rewarding him with treats for calm behavior. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of handling sessions. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration-will hard bark, growl, or lunge at other dogs, when they interact, but will typically walk right by.suki does not have much experience with strangers and will hard bark and growl. To manage Suki's reactivity on walks, use a no-pull harness and practice loose-leash walking in low-distraction areas. Gradually introduce him to other dogs from a distance, rewarding calm behavior. Over time, decrease the distance and increase the complexity of interactions, always rewarding positive behavior. Please see the handout onOn-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Separation anxiety/Destructive behavior- In the prior home in 2023 When left alone in the home, he will destroy household items, destroy furniture/walls and bark/whine. When left alone in the yard, he will bark and dig. To address Suki's separation anxiety, start by leaving him alone for short periods and gradually increasing the duration. Provide engaging toys and treats to keep him occupied. Create a safe and comfortable space for him, and consider using calming aids like anxiety wraps or pheromone diffusers. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety/Destructive behavior. Strength/leash pulling- Suki is reported to hard pull on walks. For leash pulling, use a no-pull harness and practice loose-leash walking techniques. Reward Suki for walking calmly by your side with treats and praise. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Kennel presence- In the kennel Suki will growl at handlers
