Runa
Hello, my name is Runa . My animal id is #212515. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/17/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Runa is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. She has been acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Runa has been observed as reactive on leash to other dogs, and when approached in her kennel, she begins to snarl, lunge, and bare her teeth. Runa’s snarling, lunging, and growling in her kennel are likely triggered by the noise and crowding of the shelter, which can amplify fear-based reactions in confined, overwhelming environments. Runa has a history of being fearful of new people, but she is calm and social with staff outside the kennel. Medically, Runa is overweight.

I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming and will need extra help from you to warm up

Summary:: According to Luna's previous owners, she has no experience with other dogs. 10/20/24 Luna is introduced to a male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Luna will display a neutral frame upon greeting the greeter dog at the gate. She is taken to the greeter dog's pen in order to greet him face-to-face. Luna enters the pen aloof, exploring before greeting the greeter dog. Upon greeting him, she allows her genitals to be sniffed followed by a series of mounting attempts from the greeter dog. The greeter dog must be corrected by the handler with a spray bottle. Luna will return to the greeter dog and remain still, standing neutral as the greeter dog attempts to mount again. Luna is separated and returned to kennel.
Summary (6):: 11/30/24 (Trainer Note): Runa is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. Runa engages with mild interest in the various enrichment items. She tenses and hard stares at dogs but is easily verbally redirected back onto the enrichment. Runa then begins to run around the room and solicit contact from the handler, rolling over to display her abdomen with a loose body. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 11/30/24: Runa is at the back of her kennel, growling at the handler and begins to walk away while they check her kennel, she lunges towards the front of the kennel door, growling at the handler and baring a full display of teeth. 11/17/24: Runa will display a soft frame in her kennel upon handler’s arrival but will avoid leash as handler attempts to place the rope over her head. Handler will kneel down to eye level with Runa and she will walk to the front and allow handler to slowly place the rope over her head. Runa will be brought to the live room where a drag leash is placed on her and she will run with zoomies for about 3 seconds excited to be able to free roam. Runa will trot over to handler jumping up in handler’s lap while they sit down and will lean in for head rubs and turns on back for belly rubs. Runa will sit next to handler for a period of time then will become anxious as two handlers, walked past the room door and will begin barking, Runa will be escorted back to her kennel safely with no issues.
Summary (7):: 11/10/24: Runa is at the back of her kennel growling loudly when the handler approaches and continues until the handler moves a bit. As the handler moves, she lunges towards the front of the kennel, hard barking, baring a full display of teeth and hard starting until the handler walked away fully. 10/22/24: Luna is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She is avoidant of leashing and will back away or lower her head. After a few attempts, Luna is leashed and walks with a slightly tense body to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Luna displays high levels of FAS throughout her time in the room, pacing, heavy panting, and will shake off but does not settle. While handler clips her to a drag lead and removes the slip lead, she tenses and will side eye handler. Handler discontinues contact and will give Luna a minute to decompress before removing the slip lead fully. After assessment, Luna is returned to kennel safely. 10/19/24: While on a walk, Luna is observed to vocalize and pull towards another dog before quickly whipping her head in the handler's direction. She does not make any contact. Behavior handler talks staff through how to safely hold the lead and Luna is returned to kennel without incident. 10/18/24: Luna is laying at the back of kennel with a trembling body as handler approaches. Handler kneels down and speaks softly to Luna. She will slowly come forward but retreats as handler presents the lead. Handler tosses Luna treats which she investigates but does not eat. Luna comes forward again and sniffs handler's hand, accepting light petting under chin. She is leashed with ease and walks with a slightly tense body to the play yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). On the walk, Luna pulls toward the end of the lead and then jumps up, leash grabbing once. While out on the sidewalk, Luna will pull backwards once, attempting to back out of the lead. After her session in the yard, Luna is walked back to kennel, returning safely. -

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Runa's potential challenges we recommend she be placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling- In Runa prior home it is reported that she will use the bathroom indoors on a wee wee pad or outside on the cement. she was reported to have potty accidents a few times a week. Handling/touch sensitivity- When touched around her neck or when leash perrsure is applied runa will begin to head whip and thrash.It is crucial to proceed with patience and allow the dog the autonomy to withdraw from any social interaction if needed. Dogs should never feel pressured to engage with situations or handling that make them uncomfortable. Please see the handout onHandling/touch sensitivity. Basic manners/poor impulse control- Runa will jump up repeatedly becoming anxious panting lip licking.Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/Anxiety/Separation anxiety- Runa has exhibited signs of fear, anxiety, and separation anxiety. In her previous home, she was reported to have separation anxiety, leading her to go potty indoors and bark or whine when left alone. She also became nervous during fireworks and was afraid when her nails were trimmed or her feet were touched. Runa would bark when unfamiliar people approached the house and growl when they approached her family. At the care center, she has shown anxious behaviors such as pacing, panting, lip licking, and being unable to settle.Training a fearful dog requires patience, consistency, and a gentle approach. Effective techniques include positive reinforcement, where you reward calm behavior with treats, praise, or toys to build positive associations. Desensitization and counterconditioning involve gradually exposing your dog to their triggers at a low intensity while pairing this exposure with something they love. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- when seeing other dogs runa will begin to hard pull and bark at other dogs.Addressing this requires desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques. Gradually exposing her to these triggers at a distance while rewarding calm behavior, and using tools like a no-pull harness can help manage her reactivity. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Kennel presence: While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged orstressful environments Runa may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel.We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in anysimilar future situations
