At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Chex

Chex needs emergency placement for medical reasons. She is a senior cat with erratic blood glucose regulation. She needs a low stress environment and a diabetic friendly diet indefinitely to manage her condition. She is not on insulin at this time.

Milkway is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Papa Gato

Papa Gato is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Holding room. He is now displaying signs of aggression, boredom and frustration. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Soybean

Soybean is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Soybean arrived at the care center as a stray, where she jumped socially on staff with a loose and wiggly body. In the care center, Soybean has been observed to leash bite, which is not easily redirectable, but she will take treats gently. Recently, the leash biting has become more intense. With one instance of her jumping on the handler with an open mouth and catching the handler's hand but did not break skin. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Soybean is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Soybean has dermatitis.

Oso

Oso is at risk due to behavior concerns. Oso arrived at the care center as a stray, when rangers found her tied to the fence Oso lunged, hard, barked and growled at them. In the care center, Oso does accept treats on occasion and allows petting. Oso is continuously fearful in the shelter environment. She would refuse to return to kennel and was observed to baulk and pancake. Resulting in handlers having to muscle her back or using a sling to return to kennel. Throughout her stay in the care center Oso has improved with familiar handlers but will display fearful behaviors around new handlers.Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Oso is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Oso has CIRDC.

Jack-O-Lantern

Jack-O-Lantern is at risk due to behavior concerns. Jack arrived at the care center as an owner surrender. During intake jack was friendly and outgoing with staff, jumping socially and taking treats gently. In the care center, Jack continues to jump on staff but is redirected with treat scatters. In kennel, Jack is observed to hyper salivate, hard pant and bite and tug on his leash unable to be redirected with treats or toys. Recently, Jack has begun kennel fighting with multiple instances of him spinning back on the handler, with an open mouth but not making contact. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Jack is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Jack is apparently healthy.

Dolphin

Dolphin is at risk for behavioral concerns. Dolphin arrived at the care center as a stray. Upon intake, Dolphin would jump socially on staff and allowed handling. When other dogs came through the lobby Dolphin began to hard stare followed by barking. In the care center, has been observed to become over aroused quickly, jumping up on handlers, mouthing their hands and arms, and leash biting which are redirected with treats. While on walks Dolphin remains hyper vigilant of his surroundings. Medically, Dolphin is apparently healthy.

Iron Titus

Iron Titus is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Iron arrived at the care center as a stray. During intake Iron allowed handling and took treats gently. However, he grew anxious and began to heavy pant, whining and hypervigilant of his surroundings. In the care center, Iron Titus remains anxious as he is observed to whine and vocalize. Titus also becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mounting them. In a recent incident, Titus grabbed onto someone pants and ripped it when he was mounting. Medically, Iron is apparently healthy.

Misu is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. Rigatoni

Rigatoni is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rigatoni in care has been highly stressed in kennel and not acclimating well to the shelter environment. Rigatoni is vocalizing, spinning, screeching and licking his kennel door when handlers pass him and reported to leash bite outside with staff, struggling despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Rigatoni is social with staff members. Medically, Rigatoni is apparently healthy.

Prince Cat Binks

Prince Cat Binks is a senior cat with chronic kidney disease. He is clinically doing well in shelter at this time, but his kidney disease is progressing on bloodwork. CKD is a chronic progressive disease and he will need regular vet visits, in home monitoring and care with placement.

Wendel

Wendel is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Wendel has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has begun to deteriorate despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Initially, while Wendel was readily accepting of playing with toys, he easily/quickly became aroused and began to leash bite during his assessment. During walks, he has also been observed to growl and lunge at staff members. Wendel has also been observed to bite at his kennel door and will attempt to pull his water bowl/feeder through the slot into his kennel, making a loud banging noise throughout the day. Medically, Wendel has been diagnosed with CIRDC, dermatitis, and diarrhea.

Hawk

Hawk is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Hawk in care has been struggling to acclimate to the shelter environment, starting to stare at the light above him and repeatedly run between his kennel door and bed while panting. Hawk has also began to lunge at other dogs on leash and cover his kennel in feces. Medically, Hawk is apparently healthy.

Athena

Athena is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Athena in care has been highly dog reactive on walks, lunging, snarling and vocalizing at other dogs while on leash with staff members, making it difficult to walk her at times. Athena is highly social with staff members and affectionate during interactions. Medically, Athena has dental disease, alopecia (likely from allergies), and is overweight.

Billy

Billy is at risk due to behavior concerns. Billy arrived at the care center as a stray. During intake Billy was observed to be anxious, darting around on leash while panting and pacing, and he lunged at a small dog as well. Billy displayed fearful defensive behavior with staff, growling and muzzle punching staff on the hand and thigh. When staff offered treats, Billy began mouthing the handler's hand with light pressure. In the care center, Billy continues to take treats hard as well as growling and lunging at staff. Recently, Billy's lunging has become more frequent, where he lunged at a member of the public and a bicycle passing by but was easily redirected with treats. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Billy is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Billy recently had a mass surgically removed.

Manolo

Manolo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Manolo has been observed to be very mouthie with handlers and has begun to leash bite. Manolo has been observed to mouth handlers on their hands and pant legs. During one occasion Manolo mouthed a handlers hand causing a scrape on their thumb, which did break skin and drew blood. Manolo has also been noted to jump up and bite the leash. When a handler attempted to redirect him with a toy, he jumped up and mouthed them on the chest. While out with handlers Manolo has been observed to be highly social and receptive to treats. Medically Manolo is apparently healthy.

Sixx

Sixx is at risk due to behavior concerns. Sixx arrived at the care center as a stray. On intake Sixx was friendly and allowed handling. In the care center, Sixx has been observed to take treats hard and consistently jump up on handlers and is difficult to redirect. Additionally, Sixx is a strong puller on leash and has started to engage in hard staring and lunging towards both people and dogs not being able to be easily redirected. Recently, these behaviors have gotten more intense with an instance of Sixx jumping towards a handler with an open mouth. Medically, Sixx is underweight.

Kenji

Kenji is at-risk due to behavioral concerns. Kenji has consistently charged handlers, while hard barking, baring teeth, growling, and snapping when approached in kennel, when attempting to remove her kennel, and when out for interactions. Once out of her kennel, Kenji does become somewhat conflicted with interaction but still escalates to charging and snapping when attempting to put her back in the kennel. Once back in the kennel and handlers begin to close the kennel door, she will rush the door with teeth bared and screeches. Medically, Kenji has dental disease and gingivitis.

Shea

Shea is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Shea displays high levels of anxiety and a low threshold for arousal during her stay in care. Her arousal manifests as a concerning level of leash biting which can make it challenging at times to remove her from the kennel or for walks. She initially presented as a fearful dog that soon warmed up with time and a slow approach. Shea readily engages in enrichment games, enjoys a variety of snacks, and plays with plush squeaky toys. On one occasion, she has been observed to become on-leash reactive towards another dog and the handler could not redirect her with treats. When they attempted to maneuver her away, Shea began jumping up to the point of being head level with the handler and began leash biting. Recently, Shea has also begun to fight with other dogs when removed from the kennel, attempting to bite at other dog's paws that might be sticking out. Medically, Shea has a healing wound.

Luna Apple

Luna Apple is at risk for behavior reasons. Luna Apple was very protective of her owner in the home. She would escalate to growling, snapping, at the other members of the household. Medically, she has a history of food allergies but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Charming

Charming is at risk for behavior reasons. Charming is a young, high-energy dog. He has been leash-biting and difficult to remove from kennel. He is reactive to other dogs in kennel, and on-leash. Charming will pull his kennel blocker into his kennel and on one instance almost damaged the door. Medically, Charming recently displayed acute onset lameness on his right hind limb. X-rays were clear. A partial cruciate ligament tear is possible and, if present could progress to a complete tear. Charming would benefit from weight loss and a calmer environment.

Brownie

Brownie needs emergency placement for medical reasons. He is an adult cat that is becoming more icteric and anemic in shelter. We suspect a bile duct obstruction and secondary hemolytic anemia based on imaging and bloodwork. Brownie needs an internal medicine consult including abdominal ultrasound and possibly biliary surgery.
