Animal Profile

Pretzel

Hello, my name is Pretzel. My animal id is #214355. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/10/2024.

Pretzel is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Despite attempts to keep him comfortable Pretzel has been deteriorating in care, he has begun to jump repeatedly up onto staff, grabbing at treat pouches, arms, and chests, making him difficult to walk safely. Medically, Pretzel has mild spinal kyphosis but is overall healthy.

Medically, Pretzel has mild spinal kyphosis but is overall healthy. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to Pretzel entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 11/25/24 Pretzel is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Pretzel doesn't greet the novel male dog, instead, with a tense body Pretzel charges the gate, hard barking at him from the other side. Pretzel will prey bow followed by muzzle punching the gate. Pretzel is moved away to reduce stress followed by being returned to kennel. 11/15/24: When off leash at the Care Center Pretzel is introduced to a greeter male dog. At the gate Pretzel approaches with a stiff frame and tail wags. Pretzel scents the greeter male before licking his lips and displacement scenting. Pretzel marks before turning away and seeking out the handler. The greeter male is moved to the back of the pen to make space for Pretzel to enter. Once in the pen Pretzel displacement scents with ears back. The greeter male pulls over to Pretzel and they greet face-to-face. Pretzel scents with tight lips. Pretzel will check in with the handler before returning to scent. Pretzel beings to muzzle punch the greeter male as a form of correction, but when the greeter male persists Pretzel gives off a low growl. To avoid further stress Pretzel is escorted out of the pen.

Summary (5):: 12/29/24: Pretzel is noted to becoming increasingly mouthy during walks, and has be persistently refocused with a toy or treats to dissuade him from mouthing/jumping. 12/23/24 Pretzel is at the front of his kennel with a wagging tail, sitting firmly. Pretzel is leashed with ease and taken to the live room. A drag leash is placed onto him and he is allowed to free roam. Pretzel engages with a snuffle matt as well as taken treats gently when administered. The handler will toss treats and cue Pretzel to find it. Pretzel will seek out the treats and return for more. After sometime Pretzel is returned to his kennel where he trots over with no issue, entering his kennel just fine. 12/22/24 As the handler approaches Pretzel's kennel, he is standing on the kennel door with a loose body and wagging tail. The handler leashes him with ease, and they proceed to the live room. Pretzel trots over to the live room with a neutral, relaxed frame. He enters the room and has a drag leash placed onto him, allowing him to free roam. Pretzel will immediately engage with a snuffle matt. He will approach the handler gently, sitting in front of them, soliciting treats. The handler will administer Pretzel treats and he takes them gently. Pretzel will allow handling as the handler pets him and rubs his head. Pretzel at one point becomes hasty, jumping onto the handler and into their treat in pouch in order to steal treats. The handler will shift their body, cue "sit", and Pretzel will do just that. He is rewarded for every time he executes it. Pretzel is returned to kennel where he will trot over with a relaxed frame. He enters with no issue.

Summary (6):: 12/22/24: Pretzel was lying on kuranda bed when handler approached. He was eager to exit kennel and kept getting a front foot through the leash loop. Handler moved him away from door by tossing a toy and leashed him as he re-approached. Pretzel sniffed around any toys on the floor of kennel room on his way to the BA room. He was clipped to a drag leash and engaged with soft, squeaker toys. Pretzel would carry them around in his mouth and bring them over to handlers while wagging his whole body. He engaged in fetch with handler by dropping one toy in exchange for another. He collected his toys by his snuffle mat. Pretzel was social with handlers and at one point jumped up beside them on the couch accepting many pets. He was returned to kennel with ease. Due to being highly toy motivated, a walk with toy sign was added to kennel. 12/21/24: Pretzel is standing at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He engages readily with the enrichment items and jumps intermittently up onto staff. He is returned to kennel without issue. 12/20/24 (Staff Report): ACS staff report that Pretzel began jumping up repeatedly onto their treat pouch. When the handler pulled Pretzel away, he began to lunge up towards the handler and grab at their chest and arms. He was quickly returned to kennel. 12/17/24: Pretzel was leashed with ease and walked to the live room with a loose frame. Pretzel was clipped to a drag leash and explored the room. He was highly treat motivated could be redirected from jumping up on handler by asking for a sit. Pretzel enthusiastically engaged with a puzzle feeder and a pattern game. He was returned to kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 12/15/24 Pretzel is jumping on the kennel door as the handler approaches and as they leash him, he attempts to push his way through the door panting heavily. Once he is on the floor, the handler allows him to exit the kennel, and he immediately jumps on the handler and mouths their hands holding the leash before going to their treat pouch attached to their hip. The handler stiff arms him to create distance and begins walking once he is on the floor. Pretzel pulls moderately to the live room where enrichment is laid out on the floor. He sniffs the room eating treats that he finds through he continues to pace and pant heavily. The handler offers spray cheese which he readily begins licking. When he finishes, Pretzel continues to pace in a high arousal state as he occasionally jumps on the handler and goes for the treat pouch. The handler asks for a sit and treats him when he does so, continuing the routine to deter him from jumping. After he eats more spray cheese, Pretzel is easily leashed and returned to his kennel with no issues. 12/03/24 Pretzel greets the handler standing in front of the kennel with a loose wiggly frame. When the handler opens the kennel door. Pretzel leaps on to the kennel door. During leashing Pretzel attempts so squeeze through the kennel door as well as paw at the handler. Pretzel is leashed and escorted to the play yards. When on leash Pretzel will pull moderately. In the yards Pretzel will scent the yards and mark. Pretzel will start jumping on to the handler excessively pawing at them then moving over to their treat pouch and do the same. When pretzel offers a sit the handler rewards scattering treats rewarding Pretzel. Pretzel is escorted back to the care center, kenneled and unleashed without any issues. 11/25/24 Pretzel is at the front of his kennel as the handlers approach and jumps on the door as handler goes to leash him. He is leashed with no issues and pulls moderately to the play yards for play group. After the session, he is easily leashed and walked back to his kennel where he is returned with no issues. 11/15/24 Pretzel is at the front of his kennel displaying a still, neutral frame. He will jump excessively onto the kennel door as the handler unlocks it. The handler tries leashing him, but he is skittish. Finally, the handler gets the lead onto Pretzel and takes him out for play group. Pretzel maintains his neutral frame while trotting alongside the handler. (Refer to BA for details on his interaction). When returned to kennel, Pretzel remains neutral, moderately walking over into the building. Pretzel is returned to kennel with no issue. 11/12/24: Pretzel was leashed with ease by handler 2 as handler 1 observed. He walked to the BA room for his assessment. Pretzel displayed touch sensitivity/conflicting behavior by allowing pets but head whipping with a closed mouth when pet in certain areas. Pretzel tolerated all handling for the purpose of leashing/unleashing without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Pretzel Potential challenges we recommend they are placed in an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Pretzel jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- During the assessment treats are tossed due to him taking treats roughly. Teaching him to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Anxiety/Handling/touch sensitivity- Begin desensitization training by slowly and gently touching him for short periods, immediately followed by rewarding him with high-value treats. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of the touch as Pretzel becomes more comfortable. Always observe his body language and stop the interaction if he shows signs of discomfort, allowing him to move away if needed. Consistent and positive experiences with handling will help Pretzel become more comfortable over time. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and Handling/touch sensitivity.
