At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Telly
Telly is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, Telly is a senior overweight cat looking for a relaxing place to spend the rest of her senior years.

Harley is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat, is not thriving in the care center, and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust/decompress, and who have experience with helping a fearful/under socialized adult cat adjust to strangers. Medically, due to have bite wounds of unknown origin when Harley arrvied, he is on a six month observation quarantine.

Beetle is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Medically Beetle has large superficial wounds that he is being treated for.

Caramel Swirl
Caramel Swirl is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Caramel Swirl has been highly social with caretakers and handlers during her stay in care. But she has become difficult to walk due to her intermittent leash biting, which is increasing in intensity. At times, she will take toys or treats from handlers during leashing, but once out, she can be difficult to refocus due to her persistently jumping up and biting the lead. Medically, Caramel Swirl is apparently healthy.

Patron
Patron is at risk due to kennel deterioration. In care Patron had shown signs of kennel stress such as licking her kennel walls, biting on her kennel bars, and breaking the carabiner from her kennel. She will had hard bark at other dogs across from her kennel. With handlers, she has shown social behaviors seeking attention, allowing petting, and will engage in pattern games. Medically Parton has dental disease and is overweight.

Glimmer
Glimmer is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Glimmer has had chronic diarrhea and has allowed for limited handling while in our care. Glimmer would benefit from a quiet low stress environment so his medical concerns can be addressed appropriately.

Octavia
Octavia is at risk for behavior concerns due to a consistent pattern of reactivity toward other dogs, including hard barking, growling, lunging, and charging at her crate or kennel door when dogs pass by. She has shown significant difficulty managing visual stimuli, often removing or destroying crate covers intended to reduce her stress. She has also exhibited barrier reactivity toward dogs housed near her, tracking their movements. Octavia can be easily leashed by handlers and staff, engages during interactions with toys, petting, and enjoys treats. Medically, apparently healthy.

Bailey
Bailey is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Bailey has been mostly social with handlers at the care center, displaying soft body and allowing most handling. When uncomfortable, she will thrash and move away. However, Bailey's previous owners report her to be reactive towards dogs and strangers, hard barking, lunging and snapping towards them. She is reported to be destructive and vocal in the home as well as mouthy. Medically, Bailey is apparently healthy.

Whiskers

Whiskers has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is and elderly cat with multiple issues, but his lack of appetite and unwillingness to accept supportive care due to fear and anxiety concerns us the most. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide.

Dolce Vida
Dolce Vida is at-risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially when she entered the Care Center, Dolce was fearful, showing tense and trembling body; refusing walks. Throughout her stay Dolce Vida has warmed up to handlers however has become increasingly reactive on walks, pulling hard toward dogs with tense body and vocalizing loudly. She is not able to be redirected. When passing people Dolce becomes tense and stares. With handlers she has a wiggly body. Medically, Dolce Vida has alopecia, Conjunctivitis, demodicosis, dermatitis, lactating, and unspecified abnormality.

Disco
Disco is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner noted him to have separation anxiety and will run away from home occasionally. During his first stay at the care centers, he was noted to be fearful, anxious, and have on leash reactivity. This behavior has remained consistent. During intake, he was reported to hard bark, growl, and was uninterested in treats or squeakers. He has remained aloof with handlers when interacting but when being removed from kennel, he has been noted to spin towards second handler on occasion. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Castin
Castin is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Mildred
Mildred needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is a sweet, senior dog with pneumonia. She is not eating and needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic to recover.

Ngoma
Ngoma is at risk due to behavior concerns. She arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During intake she was noted to display fearful behavior, tense, crouching away, lip licking, and whale eyeing. She has tolerated all handling and has warmed up to select handlers by taking treats, but overall remains highly fearful of her surroundings. She has been reported to seek exit, crouch, baulk, and even thrash on leash. Ngoma has remained highly treat and food motivated throughout her stay. Medically, she is apparently has dermatitis and a wound.

Sirl
Sirl needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She has a low body condition and continues to lose weight in shelter. We are concerned she has chronic inflammation in her GI tract due to inflammatory bowel disease or neoplasia. She will need an internal medicine consultation.

Shoowie
Shoowie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Shoowie in the care center has been struggling to acclimate despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Shoowie in the care center has been observed to bounce off her kennel walls, pull her water bowls and unable to settle in kennel at times. Shoowie is social with staff, but struggling in the care center. Medically, Shoowie is apparently healthy.

Bane
Bane is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous home. Bane has been reported to bite his owner while separating there resident dogs from fighting, and Bane redirected onto his owners leg breaking skin. Bane also has a history of snapping at residents in the home while in his crate. Bane in the care center has been social with staff. Medically, Bane has dental disease.

Turtle Dove in the care center has displayed some sensitives with handling at times, and during Turtle Dove's recent handling assessment displayed a significant amount of resource guarding. When approached, growled and bit and held the fake hand multiple times. Turtle Dove is becoming social with staff and volunteers during his stay in the care center. Medically, Turtle Dove is apparently healthy.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Brooklyn in the care center has been intensely fearful in care, displaying a tucked tail, whale eyeing and remaining tense during interactions. Brooklyn also has a bite history, biting a police officer when attempting to remove her from a car she was left in, breaking skin. Medically, Brooklyn is clinically healthy.

Pythagoras
Pythagorus is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Since arriving at the Care Center, he is noted to be fearful a display defensive behaviors when handlers approach his kennel. He is observed to back away and snapp at leash when attempting to be walked. Pythagoras is also noted to be reactive to dogs, growling with low tense body while in kennel room. Medically, Pythagorus has Pyoderma.
