Animal Profile

Surf

Hello, my name is Surf. My animal id is #200180. I am a male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/16/2024.

Surf is placed on the At Risk List due to behavior concerns. Surf is reported to chew holes in his kennel blockers, as well as his kennel wall stemming from his behavior deteriorating. Surf is difficult to leash at times due to his arousal and attempts to push his way out of his kennel. These behaviors indicate a high level of stress and discomfort in the kennel environment, making it challenging for handlers to manage him safely. Surf is reported to be apparently healthy.

Summary:: Due to Surf entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/16/24 Surf is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Surf greets the novel female dog and becomes tense, displaying a stiff frame. Surf's hackles raise, he lip licks and walks away, disengaging from the interaction. Surf will proceed to seek attention from the handler.

Summary (5):: 6/28/24: Surf is jumping repeatedly on the bars of the kennel as the handler approaches. Handler uses treats to lure him down and he is leashed without issue. Surf pulls moderately out to the play yard where he engages readily with the LATTE enrichment game before soliciting attention from the handler. Surf leans in with a soft body, occasionally mouthing the handler, and plays independently with toys. He is easily leashed and walks loose leash back to kennel.

Summary (6):: 06/22/24: Surf is standing neutrally in kennel when the handler approaches. He begins to jump on the kennel door and vocalize as the handler attempts to leash him so handler lures him down. He pulls moderately outside and immediately begins to engage with the set up enrichment item. Handler begins to approach, drop in treats, and retreat, watching Surf for signs of discomfort. Surf stays loose and begins to wag his tail or look up at the handler as the handler approaches. He walks away from the enrichment item and handler clips a drag leash. Surf leans into contact for a moment before walking away to explore the play yard. He then returns and leans into the handler, rubbing against them to solicit contact. He reproaches the enrichment item and handler approaches, repeating the process. Surf again shows no signs of discomfort and begins to wag his tail or look up at the handler each time the handler approaches. Handler does not come closer than 2 feet. He is easily leashed and walks moderately next to the handler back to kennel. - 6/16: Surf was found to chew on his kennel blockers from inside of his kennel. 06/15/24: Surf is jumping and hard barking in kennel upon handler’s arrival, as handler reaches in to leash Surf, he continues jumping up and down making it difficult for the slip lead to go over his head. Surf is eventually leashed and brought out to the play pin. Surf will walk around the yard exploring the environment then will come lean and sit next to handler becoming mouthy as handler pets him over the head. Surf runs off to go find a ball laying around in the play pin and will play with it on the karonda bed. Surf is brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely. 06/08/24: Surf is at the front of kennel when handler approaches. As handler opens kennel door, Surf starts jumping and trying to push out of door. Handler tosses treats into the back of kennel, momentarily distracting him and he is easily leashed. Walks with a loose body, next to handler out to the play yard. Is wiggly and loose as handler clips a drag lead. Explores yard, bouncing around. Jumps up onto handler's lap, rubbing his face into their arms and chest. Allows petting all over body, neck, and head. Handler tosses treats which Surf sniffs out in the yard. He gets a bit aroused while jumping around and mouths handler's arm slightly. Is easily redirected as handler turns body away from him. Goes back to exploring yard. Is leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 06/07/24: Surf is jumping on the front of the kennel and vocalizing as the handler approaches. Handler notices that a hole has been chewed in the wall of the kennel before taking a few moments to condition the marker. Handler rewards Surf for standing quietly. He picks up the game quickly and participates readily. -

Summary (7):: 06/01/24: Surf is jumping around in his kennel as handler is trying to leash him making it difficult to be leashed due to his high arousal moving around and placing his paws through the leash when it’s being placed over his head. Surf is brought to the play yard and a drag leash is placed on him so Surf is set free to roam the yard. Surf walks around and explores the yard with a neutral form jumping up on handler soliciting petting then running away with the zoomies. Surf is brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely. 05/17/24: Surf is standing in the front of kennel and begins trying to push his way out of kennel when handler opened the door attempting to flee. Surf and handler head to the BT room and surf immediately walks up to the secondary handler and begins mouthing on her hands. Surf walks around the room exploring the scents and checking in with both handlers in the room. Surf is demonstrating a relaxed form while he wait for handler to leash him and return him back to his kennel. Surf is safely brought back to his kennel with no issues. 5/16/24: Surf was leashed with ease and walked without pulling to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Surf was social with handlers, approaching them and allowing pets before being collared. Surf's hackles raised when meeting the other dog. Surf sought attention from handlers often and was calm throughout interaction. Surf was returned to kennel without issue.

Date of initial:: 5/23/2024

Summary:: Allowed all handling, friendly and mouthy

ENERGY LEVEL:: Surf came into the care center as a stray so we don't known how his energy level at home will be like but since surf is a young dog he displays high energy level.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Surf high level of jumping and mouthiness, and his social arousal we recommend he placed in a home with adults-only at the time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Social hyperarousal,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the assessment, Surf began to muzzle punch the dummy hand. This indicates a need for training focused on reducing his guarding tendencies. Strategies should include desensitizing and counterconditioning Surf to become more comfortable with having his items approached and touched. Managing his environment to limit access to high-value items unless supervised and using the trade-up technique, where Surf is taught to exchange items for more desirable rewards, can help mitigate guarding behavior. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control- During the assessment, Surf displayed poor impulse control and basic manners by frequently jumping on the handler. This behavior indicates a need for training focused on improving his impulse control and teaching appropriate manners. Training strategies should include positive reinforcement techniques to reward Surf for keeping all four paws on the ground and for responding to cues such as "sit" and "stay." Please see handout on Basic manners/Poor impulse control. Leash-biting/Social hyperarousal- During interactions with the handler, Surf exhibits signs of social hyperarousal, characterized by high levels of jumping and mouthiness. To address this behavior, training should focus on reducing Surf's arousal levels and teaching him alternative, more appropriate ways to interact. Implementing calmness exercises and impulse control training can help Surf learn to regulate his excitement. Consistent reinforcement of commands such as "sit" and "down" can redirect his focus and encourage calm behavior. Additionally, providing mental stimulation and physical exercise can help release excess energy and reduce impulsive behaviors. Using a gentle leader or harness to prevent mouthing on the lead can also be beneficial while working on behavior modification. With patience and consistent training, Surf can learn to manage his arousal levels and engage in more controlled interactions with the handler. Please see handout on leash-biting/Social hyperarousal. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition-Surf was reported to become mouthy when taking treats and to mouth handlers, indicating a lack of proper bite inhibition. Addressing this involves consistent training with positive reinforcement to encourage gentle behavior. Techniques like offering treats with an open hand, teaching the "leave it" command, and providing chew toys can help. Enrolling in an obedience class or consulting a professional trainer can further aid in improving his manners. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition.
