Her previous owner also states that he is highly reactive to dogs while on leash. She will hard bark, lunge and attempt to bite. Calypso also attempted to bite the cat in the home. Calypso is also noted to hard bark, growl and lunge towards strangers. Due to these detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only, single pet home that makes no trips to the dog park. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

PREVIOUS STAY: Due to Calypso entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/14/24: Sailor is introduced to multiple small mixed breed novel dogs while off leash at the care center. Calypso greets the novel dogs with a soft body. Calypso will eventually explore the pen and proceed to jump onto one of the small novel dogs. Calypso is moved away due to her increased arousal.
Summary (5):: 1/22/25: Calypso is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She briefly begins jumping at the kennel door as handler unlocks it to leash her and tangles in the leash for a moment before being successfully leashed. She exits kennel and is taken to the street for her walk, during which she pulls lightly and walks slightly in front of handler. She will walk past people on the street without issue and shows no signs of reactivity when she sees dogs on the street. Calypso will stop to use the bathroom or to sniff spots on the street she finds interesting, and after walking for a while is brought back inside. She allows handler to clip her and returns to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 1/15/25: Calypso is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping up at the kennel door while pawing at the door constantly as handler unlocks kennel door. She is difficult to leash and jumps around while pawing at handler when attempting to leash. Handler waits until she stops jumping and pawing to leash her and after multiple attempts is finally successful. She is brought out to the yard for a dog on dog interaction, she frantically pulls forward and is brought to the front play yard vestibule. She is introduced to the other dog through the gate, pulling towards the gate and holding her face near the gate. Calypso begins wagging her tail quickly and bows down, she then begins to vocalize with hackles slightly raised. She continues to pull towards the other dog and her vocalizing begins escalating after a while. She is then pulled away from the dog, and brought back to kennel where she is returned without further issue. 1/8/25 (Late Entry): Calypso is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping and barking as handler unlocks kennel door. She is leashed without issue and brought to the street for her walk. During her walk she will trot forward pulling moderately but is treat motivated and when called will turn to accept treats. Calypso walks past people on the street without issue and stops to sniff and use the bathroom while walking. After a while she is brought back inside, she allows clipping before being brought back to kennel and returned without issue.
Summary (7):: 1/5/25: Calypso is standing at the front of her kennel as handler arrives. She dodges the leash a few times before allowing handler to successfully leash her, and is taken to the street for her walk. During her walk she pulls moderately and walks past people on the street without issue. She is brought back inside after a bit to be assessed. During her assessment she allows collaring and petting and is exuberant when interacting with handlers. She takes treats with moderate pressure and wags her tail quickly and curls around handlers leg when being pet. She occasionally licks and lightly mouths handlers hands when petting, she is brought back to kennel and returned without issue. 1/2/25: Calypso is standing in her kennel, soft body but low ears back. As handler speaks to her in a soft tone, she wags her tail. Handler attempts to leash her using treats as a lure but she takes the treat and quickly retreats. Handler feeds her treats through the loop then secures the leash while Calyso engages with the treat. Once leashed, she comes out of kennel easily, plling hard and darting back and forth. In the yard, she remains low body but will turn back to handler and jump on them out of displacement. REturning to kennel, she will pull hard in a random direction then lay on the ground. She is coaxed forward and goes into her kennel without issue. 07/14/24: Sailor is laying in the middle of kennel as handler approaches. As handler opens kennel door Sailor tucks in on herself with ears back. Handler speaks to her in a soft voice and she becomes a bit wiggly with her body still low. She will crawl forward and is leashed with ease. Sailor walks with a low body out to the play yard for PG (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Sailor is returned to kennel safely. 7/14/24: Handler 2 observed Sailor pancaking upon exiting building with a staff member (handler 1.) Sailor was covered in feces so handler 2 retrieved a towel and carried her to the yard. Handler 1 waited with Sailor while handler 2 wet the towel to clean her off. Sailor tolerated all handling as she was cleaned with the towel, including her paws and tail. Sailor walked around the yard at a moderate pace. Handler 1 carried Sailor back to kennel. When handler 2 brought a toy to her kennel they noticed her bedding was already soiled again, so they switched it out before ending interaction.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Calypso is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Calypso.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Calypso's high levels of fear we recommend she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: Due to Calypso's owner reporting she attempted to bite the resident cat, Calypso should not go to a home with cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, lunging and attempting to bite dogs while on leash, we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
