This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Perfect is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Perfect in care has been highly stressed in the kennel environment, and has been deteriorating rapidly. Perfect has began to escalate to snapping at handlers hands whenever placed near her kennel door, and attempting to lunge and grab at the leash or anything near her kennel door when placed. Medically, Perfect is apparently healthy. Perfect arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During her stay at the care center Perfect has appeared loose and wiggly at the front of kennel, approaching handlers on leash with a loose body, wagging tail, and allowing petting. Lately Perfect has been observed to snap at handlers hands while attempting to leash her. It is reported that she will muzzle punch and snap at the kennel bars, wherever the handler moves their hands Perfect would lunge and snap while hard barking. Due to the detailed behavior issues we recommend an experienced adult only home at this time. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. Please check here for updated adoption hours. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Perfect was a star in every scenario--totally even keeled with a tail wag regardless of kids, dogs, skateboarders, crowded sidewalks, meeting curious humans. A little unsure and looked to me repeatedly for reassurance when walking but less so later in the day. And walked very calmly and gently (zero pulling) but right next to my leg. Zero reactivity towards anything, even briefly met my cat (safely) and had a slight tail wag and then slowly walked off. Needs a bit of potty training--had accidents in my house, but also went outside. Not surprising given the hectic day and new environments.

Summary:: 5/14/24: Perfect greets the other dog with low tail and tense body. She then seeks exit but jumping on the fence while looking up.

Summary (6):: 6/15/24: When the handler approaches for a kennel side visit Perfect is sitting at the front of the kennel with a tense body. She barks once and darts towards the handlers hand when they hold their hand near the bars, staring. When offered a chew she takes it rapidly and engages readily, taking it to her bed and chewing on it as the handler exits the room. 6/11/24 (PM): Perfect is in the kennel jumping, pacing, and barking when the handlers approach the kennel. Her kennel, legs, and body are painted with feces. When one of the handlers reaches towards the kennel Perfect quickly snaps towards their hand. Every direction the handler moves their hand she follows, snapping at them, jumping, and hard barking. As the handler unlocks the kennel she persistently snaps at and bites the bars near the lock. She takes treats hard. When the handler cracks the door open to present the leash Perfect immediately lunges towards it and tries to grab it. The handlers end the interaction there due to the safety risk. 6/11/24 (AM): It is reported that Perfect muzzle punches and snaps at the kennel bars and leash when staff attempt to remove her from kennel. When the handler unlocks the door Perfect bites the lock and tries to pull it into the kennel She is not redirected with treats and is only momentarily distracted with cheese. She grabs the leash and yanks it hard into the kennel. She is eventually able to be leashed after extensive time and effort. Other staff report similar difficulties including Perfect biting at fingers as handlers attempt to unlock and lock the kennel door (none of these incidents drew blood). When the behavior team member approaches her kennel to hang a sign up Perfect jumps up and tries to bite their hand through the kennel door. The handler moves the sign up higher to avoid her and Perfect jumps as high as she can, snapping, before falling on her back.

Summary (7):: 6/8/24- Perfect is at the front of her kennel barking and jumping up on the door when handler approaches. When handler attempts to leash, Perfect grabs the leash and pulls it into the kennel. Handler tosses treats and Perfect releases the leash and eats the treats. Handler holds out a treat when attempting again to leash, Perfect is only distracted for a moment and once the leash is presented again she tries to grab it. Handler got spray cheese and sprayed her kennel door. While she was eating the cheese handler was finally able to leash. When exiting her kennel, she pulls towards the passing kennels barking. She is taken a street walk. She has a softer body and walks on a loose leash next to handler. Handler offers her treats and she gently takes them from handler. She allows handler to pet her head, chin and back. She doesn't react to any stimuli on the street. Upon returning, she again pulls towards the other dogs. She is returned into her kennel without issue. 6/1/24: Perfect is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body when handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken out for a street walk where she walks slowly throughout. She will take treats from handler before spitting them out. In the building, she approaches multiple different staff members with a loose body and wagging tail, allowing petting. She is then returned to kennel without issue 5/9/24: Perfect is at the front of the pop up crate whining when handler approaches. She is easily leashed and brought into the assessment room where she will jump onto handler's frantically, pawing their arms. During her time in admissions, the staff reported that she will not walk readily through the hallways and required to be carried. After the assessment, Perfect is returned to their crate without issue

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Perfect so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, and social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to snapping and attempting to bite handlers hands in kennel we recommend an adult only home at this time. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Perfect has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Perfect has been observed to be fearful at the care center. However, she does warm up quickly to new handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Perfect the option to walk away from any social interaction. Perfect should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be Perfect's choice to approach a new person or thing. Perfect would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History/ Barrier frustration: During her stay at the shelter it is reported that when clipping items to her kennel door Perfect will snap and bite handles hands. It is reported that she bitted handlers fingers multiple times. This bites has not broken skin. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier frustration. Leash Biting: It is reported that when attempting to leash Perfect she will jump up, bite, and tug on the leash. When the lock is clipped to the door she will also attempt to pull this into kennel. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or spray cheese. We recommend using positive reinforcement training to teach Perfect to focus on you rather then grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
