Animal Profile

Billy

Hello, my name is Billy. My animal id is #216814. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/16/2024.

Billy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Billy has been highly stressed in the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Billy throughout the day will bang on his kennel door incessantly, triggering the other dogs stress levels in the room to begin barking. Billy is a social dog with staff but struggling within the care center. Medically, Billy has dental disease.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am a sweet, social, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am really treat motivated. You can use treats to teach me new things! I can go home today! It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary:: Due to Billy entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 12/20/24: When off leash at the Care Center Billy is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Billy approaches stiff with a high curved tail and displaying hackles, ears back. Billy climbs the gate before marking and whining. Due to Billy's discomfort a face to face was not conducted.

Summary (6):: 2/3/25: Billy is banging on his kennel door during cleaning times, triggering other dogs to begin barking. 2/2: Billy continues to dig and bang loudly on his kennel door. Staff observe that his banging also triggers other dogs in the room or some become more stressed due to his behavior. 1/25/25: Billy has been observed to bang on his kennel door incessantly. 1/23/25: Billy is lying down on his bed as handler approaches. He then approaches the door slowly and is able to be leashed with ease to be taken to the live room for enrichment fun. In the room, he explored around and wasn't interested in any puzzles, toys or treats. He would approach the handler and hard stare with a tense body and slow wagging tail. After a little more exploring, he showed some interest in the sniffle mat and ate a few treats off the ground. He approached the handler again, and was able to be taken back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 1/21/25: Billy can be seen digging and slamming on his kennel door for several minutes while kennels are being cleaned in the evening. - 1/12/25 Billy is standing on all fours as the handler approaches, displaying a neutral frame and soft face. Billy is leashed with ease and taken for a walk. Billy, on his way out of the building, will cry a bit as he passes through kennel rooms. Upon exiting the facility, Billy loosens up, displaying a more relaxed frame. Billy doesn't take any treats when administered but will lean in for petting. Billy will solicit pets from the handler and remain soft when pet. Billy and the handler will commence their walk as the handler applies minimal leash pressure and Billy trots alongside moderately. Billy is returned to the facility where he enters the facility as well as his kennel with no issue. 1/5/25: Billy is sitting at the back of his kennel stiff as the handler approaches. When the handler unlocks the door, Billy loosely comes to the front wagging his tail. He is easily leashed and walked to the behavior room for enrichment. In the room, Billy is stiff and aloof. His body tenses as the handler slowly attempts to clip a drag leash. Handler 2 distracts Billy as handler 1 clips the leash. Billy then neutrally explores the room sniffing. He licks cheese and PeanutButter off a lick mat. He picks up a toy in the room and carries it around while whining before dropping the toy. When he approaches the handler and they let him sniff their hand, Billy tenses and pins back his ears. Billy is stiff when leashing him and unclipping the drag leash as handler 2 unclips him while handler 1 distracted him with treats. He whines as he is walked back to his kennel and pulls to go back inside. 12/29/24: Billy was siting on his bed as handler approached his kennel. He then approached the front odor as the handler was unlocking it. He was leashed with ease and taken to the live room for enrichment fun. On the way to the room, when passing vet services, he stopped and got tense and lowered his body frame to the ground. He then started to speed walk passed the wet floor sign and turn quickly down the hall to get passed the entrance door to vet services quickly. In the room, he engaged in the cheese lick mat and wasn't interested in any other treats or any toys. He had the lick mat sliding all around room as he engaged with it. He was nervous to pass vet services again on the way back to his kennel, and walked with his body and head low to the ground as he passed the entrance door. He then started to speed walk as he got closer to his kennel. He was able to enter his kennel with no issues.
