Date of assessment:: 1/9/2025
Summary:: Buddy has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. In kennel Buddy is avoidant of the leash and will retreat to the back of his kennel. While out with handlers Buddy maintains a tense and trembling body while showing whale eye. Buddy is also observed to flinch away from handlers with their slightest movements. Due to high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety Buddy is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 1/5/25: Buddy is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed using a hook which he dodges a few times before being successfully leashed. He is brought out of kennel and slowly creeps out the kennel, his ears are low and his body is hunched. He walks alongside handler out to the yard and once up the stairs begins walking around the perimeter of the yard. Sudden moments and noises cause him to flinch and even more subtle hand gestures cause Buddy to flinch. He is brought into the play yard and circles around handler multiple times, looking back at handlers with whale eye. He is brought into other play yards and walked around the yards perimeter for a bit more. He tolerates clipping before being returned to kennel without further issue. 1/4/25: Buddy is laying on his bed at the back of the kennel. Handlers approach and he turns his head away with pinned back ears. An assortment of treats are tossed including high value ones but he is not interested. Handler kneels down in front of the kennel with door slightly ajar but Buddy remains in place. Handler attempts to lasso him, tossing the loop of the leash over his head but when it lands on him he flinches hard and pushing himself away. A hook is then used to slowly place the loop over Buddy's head. Once the leash is secured, Buddy comes forward and walks to the yard slowly. He walks when handler walks then stops. He is tense, ears back and wide eyed. The leash is clipped slowly and he goes back to kennel without issue. 1/3/25: Buddy is standing next to his owner when staff members approach. He moves with the owner when owner walks forward then stops. Owner is asked to place two slip leads on for safety. Buddy slowly follows staff members through the hallway and to his kennel. He stands in front of the kennel but does not readily go in. He is muscled into kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Buddy is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Buddy.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Single pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to bite history with a familiar dog and a history of hard barking and growling at unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Buddy has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to be avoidant of the leash and of handlers. Buddy is observed to maintain a tense body and flinch away from handlers. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Buddy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History (Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Buddy's previous owner states that he is reactive with other dogs when they are near. Buddy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
