At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Knoll

Knoll is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Knoll is intensely fearful and highly stressed, displaying a tense body, widened eyes, tucked tail, whimpering, flinching to sudden sounds, and exit-seeking behavior. She is avoidant of handling pressure, backs away during leashing, and shows freezing, staring, and head whipping. Though she will cautiously approach for food or brief contact with staff and is slowly seeking affection from select staff members. Medically, Knoll is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Shadow

Shadow is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Paris

Paris is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Paris has been very fearful since she arrived at the care center, tense, low body, growling, seeking exit and avoiding contact. She has warmed up slightly to select handlers, seeking attention and accepting treats from handlers hand. Medically, she has CIRDC.

Paladin

Paladin is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care Paladin was observed to be initially fearful. Noted to retreat from handlers quickly and head whip with an open mouth when they attempt to handle him. Recently Paladin has opened up to handlers and has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to quickly escalate to jumping up, biting, and tugging on the leash. Medically, Paladin is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Leonitus

Reservation in progress
Leonitus is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Leonitus has displayed poor kennel presense and is a bit weary of new staff members, including jumping at the kennel door, baring teeth, and snapping toward the kennel wall when handlers pass. During walks, he can present with a neutral body but remains hypervigilant Medically, Leonitus is apparently healthy.

Fernando

Fernando is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Fernando has a high level of fearfulness, including growling, baring teeth, and hard staring at handlers passing his kennel. During handling, he alternates between seeking contact and showing defensive behaviors, becoming stiff, growling, and hard staring when approached by unfamiliar staff. Medically, Fernando is apparently healthy.

Honeydew

Honeydew is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in her previous home. In her previous home, Honeydew has shown fear-based reactivity toward unfamiliar people, including barking and growling from a distance and retreating or hiding. During a recent incident, she startled and snapped at a roommate’s leg, making brief contact without breaking skin, then fled and hid. In the care center, Honeydew is social and playful with staff. Medically, Honeydew is apparently healthy.

Rusell

Rusell is at risk for behavior reasons. Rusell was brought to the care center as a stray. The finder allowed Rusell to interact with their own dogs and Rusell bit the small dog near the neck, leaving a puncture wound on the ear. In the care center, Rusell has been walked with a toy to manage his leash-biting behavior. He does find toys of a high value with potential to resource guard. He is food motivated as well. Medically, he is underconditioned.

Coast

Coast is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Coast demonstrated a low threshold for arousal. He was reported to bite his leash and persist in this behavior despite the use of treats and toys, only stopping when interruption tools were applied. When not engaging in leash-biting behavior, Coast displayed social behavior. Medically, Coast has Canine infectious respiratory disease complex, dermatitis, otitis externa and pyoderma .

Kerigold

Kerigold is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Kerigold’s behavior has been deteriorating despite efforts to keep her comfortable through enrichment. She has been reported to bite the leash in her kennel and to grab and chew the leg of her Kuranda bed. Treats and enrichment were offered to help refocus her, but she had difficulty re-engaging. Medically, Kerigold has CIRDC and periodontal disease.

Jacobo

Jacobo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Jacobo when first entering care has shown high level of defensive aggression, including hard barking and lunging at staff on approach and growling or snapping at the leash during handling. Jacobo is social with staff in the care center but has displayed concerning behaviors that need to be properly managed. Medically, Jacobo is apparently healthy.

Symphony

Symphony is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Symphony is highly fearful, displaying a tense body, avoiding petting, and tucking her tail. She has shown low tail wags with select staff. Medically, Symphony is apparently healthy.

Cardi

Cardi is at risk for behavior reasons. Cardi is deteriorating in care and causing harm to herself in her kennel. She will fixate on the transfer door and chew, her face and paws swelling. She is very sweet and social with staff and volunteers. However, she should be the only dog in the home. Medically, Cardi has periodontal disease, mammary gland tumors and a dermal mass.  Cardi was underweight when she arrived at the shelter.  While blood work was consistent with her body condition, chronic disease including liver or GI disease is possible.

Pretty Pickle

Pretty Pickle is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid bite/scratch incidents.

Carlos

Carlos is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is declining in the Adoptions room. He initially displayed fearful body language and spent his time hiding; then, he warmed up to attention and allowed petting on the head, cheek, and body; however, he is now displaying signs of fearfulness again by hissing or retreating during interactions. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He has potential to improve but it appears that his long term stay in the shelter setting has resulted in limited progress in his behavior. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Zam

Zam is at risk due to he behavior concerns. Zam is a social dog who engages in training games and play with staff. He has been reported to be highly reactive toward other dogs, including kennel fighting and pulling toward them while on walks. Recently, his reactivity has extended to strangers; in one incident, he lunged toward a stranger’s face. Medically, Zam has dental disease.

Milo

Recommend at risk list for medical reasons. Milo is a senior cat with FIV and a persistent URI in care. Testing came back positive for calicivirus. Milo is eating well, but will need follow-up veterinary care with placement. Behaviorally, he has been friendly and allowed all medical handling.

Mochi

Mochi is on the at risk list for medical reasons. Mochi tested positive for both FeLV and FIV infection. Further testing is consistent with progressive FeLV infection. Mochi was also rejected from surgery due to an abnormal heart rhythm. He will need follow up with a veterinarian and a consult with a cardiologist if the abnormal heart rhythm persists. Behaviorally, he was social for his intake, but squirmed and resisted restraint for medical tasks.

Harlem

Harlem is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Since her arrival, Harlem has been reported to be highly fearful and is only allowing minimal handling. When attempting to remove her from kennel, Harlem has been observed to growl at handlers, retreat from leashing, and become tense in body. She has also been observed to head-whip toward a staff member's hand when attempting to clip her leash to be returned to kennel. When Harlem is out on walks she is noted to walk with a loose leash. However, she has not warmed up to handlers using a slow approach, verbal coaxing, or high value treats. Medically, Harlem is noted to have dental disease, and be overweight.

Tarmack

Tarmack is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially, Tarmack was observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl and lunge towards people. During his assessment Tarmack was observed to have a tense body, show whale eye, and lip lick. Overtime Tarmack has warmed up to handlers. Tarmack has also been observed to pull hard towards other dogs in the kennel room and while on the street. During one instance, Tarmack attempted to jump through the gate to get closer to another dog. Medically, Tarmack is apparently healthy.

Gazelle

Gazelle is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During her stay in the care center Gazelle has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to bark, growl, and bare teeth towards handlers. During one instance when a handler initiated contact, Gazelle bared teeth at them. While on leash, Gazelle remains tense with a low body, tucked tail and pinned ears. Medically, Gazelle has alopecia, CIRDC, chronic otitis, and a wound.

Summer

Summer is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Summer arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing concerns. Summer's previous owner reported she is reactive to dogs, and has a bite history to another dog. It was reported while at dog daycare Summer had an incident with a younger dog after giving fair warning Summber bit on the dog resulting in broken skin on the cheek. In the Care Center, Summer has also been observed to be fearful and anxious. At times Summer has baulked during walks, become tense bodied, and has to be coaxed verbally to continue walking. With select staff, Summer has shown signs of warming up; going for walks more consistently, allowing contact, and becoming more treat receptive. Summer's previous owner describes her as couch potato and social with people. Medically, Summer is noted to have Nuclear Sclerosis, and be overweight.
