Baelon
Hello, my name is Baelon. My animal id is #210372. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/18/2024.
Baelon is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Baelon has been observed to be stressed in kennel, and highly rope reactive. Noted to be heavily panting, barking persistently and biting at the walls causing a hole. While out on walks Baelon has been observed to jump up high and bite the leash, while biting the leash Baelon has been observed to growl. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. With handlers Baelon has been observed to allow all handling and is receptive to treats. Medically, Baelon is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
My medical notes are...

Summary:: 9/25/24: Baelon approaches the other dog at the gate quickly with tense body and loose tail wag. He sniffs at the fence and follows the other dog along the gate. When handler pulls him away, Baelon jumps and pulls in the direction of the other dog.
Summary (4):: 1/19/25 (Trainer Note): Baelon is standing at the front of kennel with a soft body. He begins to jump up on kennel bars and paw at the lock as the door is opened. He attempts to leash bite but a toy is used as a distraction to leash. Once removed from kennel he begins to moderately-intensely leash bite. Handler uses verbal correction paired with a cued "sit" and this is repeated every time he begins to leash bite. He leash bit about 3 times while being walked to the yard. One in the yard, he shakes off and is put on a drag leash. Baelon remains loose and runs back and forth from the pen, occasionally jumping up at handler, a few times attempted to mouth while jumping. He accidentally bit and released handlers jacket sleeve but was easily redirected into a "sit" and was rewarded. Baelon is very engaged and receptive to two-toy fetch, but he begins to become very aroused, jumping and mouthing handler with more frequency and intensity. Handler ceases the game and begins the "Up, Down" pattern game. Baelon is engaged and receptive. Jumping up and down from bench, receiving his reward with his 4 paws on the floor. Baelon remains loose with a relaxed tail wag for the remainder of the walk. He allows pets briefly, is leashed and returned to kennel without issue. He is given enrichment as well.
Summary (5):: 1/12/25: Baelon is observed to leash bite when leashing and being removed from the room. He is redirectable with treats. He is kept on a shorter leash, even on the street, as he attempts to exuberantly jump on people passing by. As he is being returned to kennel he thrashes at the entrance of the room, handler has to use some muscle to return him to kennel. 1/12/25: ACS staff reported Baelon was intensely leash biting on the street, occasionally mouthing handlers hand with light pressure. He was redirect-able with treats and squeakers but they had to be utilized continuously throughout walk. 1/9/25 (Trainer Note): Baelon is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He mouths the leash briefly but ultimately becomes still and is able to be leashed without a lure. He is removed from kennel and he pulls moderately to the street. He begins to leash bite but is redirected with a treat toss. Throughout walk he had brief moments of intense leash biting, at one point accidentally, and very briefly, he caught handlers sleeve but immediately released. Handler would intermittently play the popcorn pattern game, and he would cease leash biting. Baelon would also have bursts of sprinting until the end of the leash. In those moments, handler would pause walking and wait for Baelon to release leash pressure to reward. He quickly caught on and was receptive to training. He began to check in without being prompted and he was rewarded. Towards the end of his walk, he was barely pulling and more so walking alongside handler. He head whipped when handler attempted to pet but continued accepting treats. He was returned to kennel without issue and given a wobbler for enrichment. 1/4/25: It was reported by staff members that Baelon has been growling while leash biting. He has also been biting at the kennel wall, leaving a hole. 12/30/24: Baelon is jumping up against the kennel door with a loose wiggly body. He is easily leashed and taken out of the room. Baelon jumps up to bite the leash after exiting, handler uses squeaker to redirect. He is taken to the street where he pulls slightly on the lead. Baelon turns his head to mouth the leash continuously throughout the walk and the handler uses and squeaker and tosses treats. There is one instance when Baelon jumps up to bite the leash and will not release. The handler straight-arms until Baelon settles down. He is brought back into the building and returned to kennel with no issue. 12/18/24: Baelon was observed to be vocalizing and breaking out of his pop up crate. He was biting at the bars and pawing at the door. K9 behavior took him into a office while a kennel was being set up. Baelon was exuberant in the office and at times would leash bite and become very jumpy/mouthy this was redirectable with treats and toys. 12/17/24: Baelon is observed to be hard panting and barking in his crate when the kennel room was inactive.
Summary (6):: 12/9/24: ACS report that Baelon is rope reactive on the street. 11/9/24:Baelon is sitting at the front of the kennel when handler approaches, he is easily leashed and taken out on a street walk. In the elevator he jumps on handler but is redirected with a treat toss, handler keeps him in a sit, feeding him treats. Another staff member enters the elevator and talks to Baelon, he jumps towards them with a loose body but is held back by the handler. On the walk Baelon pulls moderately, remains soft bodied but would dart in different directions as well as randomly taking off. Baelon was interested in people walking by but was easily called back to the handler. A crowd is passing by and the handler brings Baelon to the side and has him in a sit feeding him treats. Baelon remained focused on the handler until a member of the public makes a comment towards Baelon and jumps towards them with a soft body, Handler holds him back and he is redirected with a treat toss. Returning back to kennel, Baelon starts backing up and then flailing around at the kennel door refusing to go in, he was muscled back into kennel. 10/27/24- ACS staff reported mouthiness from Baelon when gets overstimulated. 10/26/24: Baelon is at the front of the kennel with a soft and wiggly body. He sits for a treat and is easily leashed. He is walked on the street and he is bouncy and sporadic on leash. He will run to the end of the leash and spin around. He will check in periodically with handler and receive a treat as a reward. He is soft bodied throughout. He returns to kennel without issue. 10/11/24: Baelon is standing in the front of his kennel barking at handler. He is leashed without issue and upon exiting the kennel begins jumping upward and onto handler. Baelon is taken to the street for his walk, he continues to jump along the way but is able to be refocused using treats in the elevator. Once outside Baelon will sniff around but will randomly lunge and jump forward as fast as possible until he reaches the end and is stopped by the leash. Handler attempts to refocus him using treats which works but once handler continues walking Baelon continues jumping and lunging forward. Baelon walks past people without issue and will accept treats from handler with moderate pressure when walking. He is brought back to the building and returned to kennel without further issue.
Summary (7):: 10/08/24: Baelon is at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He is leashed using a squeaker as a lure He leaps out of kennel and is taken to the street. While walking, Baelon had a high arousal level, jumping up at handler every time handler took step forward. He persistently and continuously displayed this behavior, jumping up at handler and reaching eye level. He also continued spinning in place 2-3 times at time and then jumping into handler. He was treat motivated, but if you did not get him the reward fast enough, he would push off of you to kennel fight. He was returned to kennel without further issue. 9/25/24: Baelon is at the front of the kennel with a somewhat stiff body, wagging his tail. He jumps up and lightly mouths the handlers hand while they try to leash him. He is leashed and does not take treats. He pulls hard on the way to the backyard. He jumps sporadically and tries to dig in the handlers treat pouch. He is taken to a pen where he relieves himself and watches another dog with an alert body, pulling towards them to the point that he is standing on his hind legs. He is easily redirected with a squeaker. He is taken for a gate greet where he approaches rapidly with a somewhat stiff body and loose tail wag. He sniffs at the fence and follows the other dog along the gate. His body relaxes and he has a soft expression. As he is walked away from the other dog he starts jumping and pulling hard towards them. He is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 9/21/24 (late entry)- Baelon is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Baelon is highly anxious, and will mouth staff hands due to his discomfort around his neck. Due to these behaviors, Baelon should go to a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Baelon jumps on staff in a friendly manner. Baelon should learn impulse control using positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Handling/touch sensitivity/Anxiety: Baelon is highly anxious and becomes increasingly anxious when his collar is touched, mouthing the handler's hand. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Baelon feel comfortable with touch near his neck and daily enrichment for his anxiety. Please see the handouts on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition, Handling/touch sensitivity and Anxiety. Leash Biting: Baelon has been observed to jump up and bite the leash while on walks. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
