Animal Profile

Junior

Hello, my name is Junior . My animal id is #216959. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/17/2024, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Junior is on the at-risk list for medical reasons - Junior has a severe URI with anorexia and will not tolerate medical handling for supportive care. He will need to be hospitalized with placement and will likely need a feeding tube placed (unable to manage here due to behavior).

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Junior is on the at-risk list for medical reasons - Junior has a severe URI with anorexia and will not tolerate medical handling for supportive care. He will need to be hospitalized with placement and will likely need a feeding tube placed (unable to manage here due to behavior). What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Junior tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter; he may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Junior's not quite sure about the Care Center. He came forward to sniff the treats I held before deciding he actually wasn't interested and leaping onto his condo shelf to make his point. Curling himself up like a perfect kitty statue, Junior seemed to sigh as he waited for whatever was going to happen next. I know sometimes life can feel like it's happening to you, so my heart went out to dear Junior knowing that he's been through so many big changes recently. Junior was brought to us after living in a home with many other cats and figuring out his path may take him some time. I spent a few moments talking with Junior and right as I closed the door, he went over to the treats. We're all hoping that someone will see dear Junior trying his very best and give him the chance to become part of a family.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/22/24 Vol Junior was on the shelf, at the very back. I put Squeeze Up near him. He looked fearful, watching the door to the room. He began to eat the Squeeze Up. I tried to hold the tray steady for him but he pulled away each time my hand got too close to him. He needs time to adjust. His kennel card said he liked “things that crinkle”, so I put a crinkly ball toy in with him. Hopefully, he will play with it. 12/28/24 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Junior has a neutral face and body with his paws tucked away and forward ears. He shows no reaction when I open the kennel door in place treats in front of him and accepts pets on his head/cheeks with no reaction. He begins to enjoy his treats when I close the kennel door and step away. 1/06/25 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense and feet and tail tucked. He holds firm eye contact until I open the kennel door, then he retreats immediately to his perch to avoid hands-on interaction. I leave him some treats and end the session. The treats remain untouched while I'm in the room... very cute but very nervous. 1/13/25 FB79 Today, Junior displayed the same behavior described in the previous enrichment note.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Junior is on the top part of his kennel with neutral eyes forward ears, and a tightly wrapped tail; he shows no interest in treats that the assessor places down next to him and tolerates brief petting on the head, cheeks and down his back with no reaction. Soon after he turns his whole body facing the back of the kennel where he tightly wraps his tail and lowers his head in attempt to avoid further contact. Pick up was not attempted at this time to limit FAS. Junior tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter; he may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
