At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Roadrunner

Roadrunner is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Roadrunner arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Roadrunner has been observed to be highly reactive. Noted to lunge and hard bark towards people, dogs, and bikes. During his assessment Roadrunner was also observed to lunge towards the handler with an open mouth. It has also been reported by staff that Roadrunner will growl in the back of his kennel as people pass by. He has tolerated some handling. Medically, he is apparently underweight.

Scooby
Scooby is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Tina Turbo
Tina Turbo is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She has a significant heart arrhythmia and needs care and diagnostics that we area unable to provide. Behaviorally, Tina Turbo is a sweet affectionate cat who solicits attention from handlers and allows all handling.

Amethyst
Amethyst is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Amethyst has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or toys. Amethyst has also been observed to become over aroused when interacting with handlers. Noted to jump up and mouth handlers. While with handlers Amethyst has been observed to be receptive to treats and may offer the cue sit. Medically Amethyst is apparently healthy.

Mo
Mo is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Mo is a young dog with severely decreased range of motion in his jaw (he is unable to open his mouth). He has been eating okay despite this, but has now also been diagnosed with CIRDC. Radiographs indicate temporomandibular osteoarthrosis with partial arthrodesis. He will need an orthopedic consult and CT to fully understand the cause of this problem and explore corrective options. Behaviorally, he is energetic, but has allowed medical handling.

Banjo
Banjo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Banjo in care has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Banjo has displayed a low threshold for arousal, snapping/lunging at staff, attempting to mount staff and lunging at this kennel door when returned to kennel. Medically , Banjo has recently recovered from CIRDC and has dental disease, hypothyroidism, chronic otitis, and pyoderma.

Milo
Milo is at risk due to behavior concerns. In his previous home, Milo was described to be friendly and tolerant of both strangers and children, can be mouthy and jumpy, and will pull really hard on leash. When around other dogs, he tended to hard bark, growl, and lung. At the Care Center, Milo was reported to react to dogs as they pass his pop up crate. In a recent incident, Milo broke out of his crate, ran towards another dog in the hallway and 'bear-hugged' them. He has remained social with staff. Medically, Milo is apparently healthy.

Canoe
Canoe is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Canoe is a dog with hip dysplasia degenerative joint disease, and a torn muscle in his left thigh. Canoe would benefit from being seem by an orthopedic specialist for further evaluation and management of his medical issues. Behaviorally, Canoe has been noted to have very high energy - but has allowed handling during his stay with us at ACC.

Sailor

Sailor is at risk for behavioral reasons. Sailor was returned from foster due to multiple bite incidents. When the foster parents child went to pet Sailor on the head she bit them on the hand resulting in two puncture wounds. The foster parents partner then attempted to pet Sailor on the head. Sailor attempted to bite them, due to them moving their hand quickly only an abrasion was caused. During her stay in the care center Sailor has been observed to be receptive to treats and allow handlers to pet her. Medically Sailor has a mass, is overweight, and has periodontal disease.

Peas
Peas is currently at risk for behavior reasons. Peas has displayed dog reactivity during her stay at the care center, both in and out of kennel. She will often turn towards handlers after reacting jumping on them and mouthing them. When greeting dogs at the gate, Peas will be stiff bodied and when off leash with a decoy dog, she bites at the dogs face. With staff, Peas has been soft and social, often seeking attention and accepting touch. Medically, Peas has CIRDC and has an ocular abnormality and is not eating well.

Anubis

Reserved
Anubis is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While out with handlers Anubis has been observed to have a loose and wiggly body and will offer a sit for treats. Despite our best efforts at making him comfortable Anubis has been showing high levels of stress while in kennel. He has been observed to stred his linens, jump up high, scale the kennel door while bouncing off and spinning in kennel. He is also observed to be hard barking and heavily panting while jumping. Medically Anubis has a fractured tooth and is underweight.

Blu
Blu is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Blu has been anxious and fearful during both his stays at the care center. While he allows for handlers to leash and walk him, he has avoided further interaction, tensing and head whipping when collaring is attempted. His previous owner reports that he can be shy around strangers and bark and snap at them. Blu lived with another dog and with children. He was reportedly friendly and social with them but can be avoidant of children and snap at unfamiliar dogs. At the care center, Blu has engaged in intense cage fighting, pulling hard, baring teeth and barking towards the other dogs. Medically, Blu is apparently healthy.

Scout
Scout is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. Scout initially arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Scout was observed to be dog reactive. Noted to pull towards dogs while in leash. During his stay in foster Scout was observed to quickly become over aroused, jumping up on the foster and mouthing them with hard pressure. On one occasion while the foster was playing with Scout he began to become over aroused. He began jumping up on them and mouthing their forearms. He was not able to be redirected easily and would quickly resume mouthing. The foster sustained several small puncture wounds on their left forearm and deep blue and purple bruising on both forearms. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Ms. Valentine

Ms. Valentine is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Valentine was returned from her trial adoption due to a bite incident in the home. Valentine jumped over a baby gate to greet the trial adopter at the same time as the resident dog ran by. Valentine lunged and bit the small dog causing two scratches on the dogs stomach, one scratch on the right hind leg, and one puncture on the right hind leg. Despite our best efforts at making her comfortable, during her stay in the care center Valentine has been observed to be hard barking at the kennel door, vocalizing persistently and pawing at the transfer door. Medically Valentine is apparently healthy.

Byzantium
Byzantium is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Byzantium is a sweet girl who has not been thriving at the care center. She has severe dental disease and low blood protein levels. Byzantium has been eating wet food with a very good appetite, but has continued losing weight here. Byzantium needs dental care and possible work up for intestinal disease. This work up should include an abdominal ultrasound. Byzantium can thrive outside of the shelter environment with some treatment and special attention.

Donut
Donut is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. When first arriving at the care center, Donut was fearful, remaining at the back of his kennel, shaking and moving slowly throughout the care center. However, he has opened up tremendously, often seeking handler attention by leaning in and remaining near handlers. He has also become more reactive over time, hard barking and pulling towards dogs, people and even his own reflection. Sometimes, he will then turn to handlers, jump on them or mouth their hands and sleeves. It is reported that Donut will 'scavenge' on the street grabbing twigs, feces and even a baby pacifier in his mouth. Donut is highly treat motivated and most of these behaviors can be redirected at least momentarily. Medically, Donut has demodicosis, otitis externa and is underweight.

Jackie

Jackie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Jackie has been observed to be kennel reactive during her stay at the care center. Noted to plant her feet against the wall and push off attempting to reach the other dog. While cage fighting Jackie has been observed to make contact with the handlers leg. After exiting the kennel room Jackie has been observed to jump up on the handler with an open mouth. Jackie has also been observed to snap at the leash while in the elevator. While out with handlers Jackie is receptive to treats and allows pets. Medically Jackie has CIRDC.

Marshall
Marshall is at risk for medical reasons. Marshall has a severe upper respiratory infection, causing him to not eat and lose weight in the shelter. He is shy but allows all handling for medications. Marshall needs continued supportive care and a quiet place out of the shelter environment to help him recover.

Tola
Tola is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Tola is a friendly senior cat. We have assessed that Tola is diabetic and have started Tola on a treatment plan; she also has dental disease and an enlarged liver. Tola will need daily maintenance with her medical condition and further follow up with outside vet care. Tola has allowed all handling and seeks attention during their exams.

Fonzie
Fonzie is on the at-risk list for behavioral concerns. Fonzie arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Fonzie has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be avoidant of handlers and begin to frantically seek exit when they attempt to interact. Fonzie has been observed to be receptive to treats and coaxing but has been unable to complete a handling assessment. Medically, Fonzie has recently recovered from CIRDC and is healthy.

Rapalo
Rapalo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rapalo in the care center has been selective to who can handle him, remaining fearful around new staff and attempting to flee from staff after slipping from his collar. Rapallo has escalated to snapping at staff in attempts to handle him, but has warmed up to select staff members being social/affectionate. Medically, Rapalo is apparently healthy.

Xena
Xena is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Xena has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment, and has began to kennel fight leaving kennel rooms, and when dogs are passing begins to bark and bite her bars, swiping her paws under the door to get to the other dogs, making it difficult to walk her safely. Xena does have a bite history where she bit her previous owner not breaking skin, but bruising. Medically, Xena is apparently healthy.

Tilly
Tilly is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Tilly in care is struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Tilly barks, heavily pants, and jumps at her kennel door incessantly throughout the day, and does not settle. Tilly is social and affectionate with staff, but is struggling in the kennel environment. Medically, Tilly is apparently healthy.

Axel
Axel is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Axel has been highly anxious at the care center, panting, zig zagging on walks and flipping his water bowl in kennel. He also becomes easily aroused, jumping onto handlers with a tense posture and turning quickly towards touch. Axel has begun training sessions with the staff trainer and has been receptive, though is easily distracted by environmental factors such as noises. Medically, Axel is apparently healthy.
