Kit Kat
Hello, my name is Kit Kat. My animal id is #236886. I am a desexed male tri color cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 9/16/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKit Kat is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of high FAS and no longer is tolerant of petting/touch - escalating to fearful defensive behaviors. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: When Kit Kat's guardian went into the hospital, they secured care for their beloved cat until they returned. Except Kit Kat's person didn't return and the person who had been caring for Kit Kat now needed help themselves. Kit Kat wears his confusion clear as a bell on his face as he tries to figure out what exactly he should be doing and why he can't seem to get it right. The shelter is busy and everyone seems to know exactly what to do and where to go, but Kit Kat doesn't know that for himself yet. He poked his head out of his den and Kit Kat's just so beautiful, and I wanted to tell him that and also that he's getting everything right, it's just that it's all been pretty challenging for him lately and we know that. I wish I could tell him in a way that he'd understand that someone's going to notice him working so hard and give him just the chance he needs.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Kit Kat was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He previously lived with 1 Adult.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: /9/22/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with his tail wrapped tightly around his body. He is tolerant of petting with the scratcher tool from within the den while tilting his ears and shifting away. He does not show immediate interest in the treats or the catnip toy offered. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when he feels more safe. Needs more time to adjust. 9/27/25 FB20 Laying down in kennel, he sniffs tool with treat and starts eating! He gradually gets closer to the front of the kennel with a trail of treats as staff member speaks softly to him. He thinks hard about eating the treat at the very front of the kennel, before bravely running up to it, his body low, and taking it to the back of the kennel to eat. 9/30/25 FB06 Upon approach, Kit Kat is in his den, ears are forward and relaxed. When i opened the cage he began to meow lightly but remained in his den. I offered him treats on the scratcher tool but showed no interest. When they were dropped inside the den he began to eat the treats. I left treats just outside the den that he proceeded to eat when I walked away. He does have some nasal congestion. 10/06/25 FB06 When I open the kennel door, Kit Kat is out of view tucked in the back of his den. I offered the scratcher tool with treats on it that he did sniff but then backed away. I dropped the treats into the den which he ate. I made a trail of treats leading to the front of the kennel but he never came out. 10/9/25 FB79 Very handsome and shy boy. Kit Kat can be quietly meowing from inside of his den when i open the kennel door and speak; he chirps and is slow blinking as i continued to talk. However, when i bring in the tool for him to sniff he tensed up, arching his back and hunching his shoulders inward with wide eyes. He lets me run the tool down his back but is fixated on it as he wraps his tail around his legs and body. Kit Kat starts to chirp and meow when i remove the tool and start to talk to him again followed by some slow blinks. 10/12/25 FB79 Inside of his den, kit has forward ears and a slightly tense body when i open the kennel door; he starts to meow and when i speak to him he has no further reaction. He watches as i lift the den glass and place a tray of treats for him but doesn't even lean in to inspect. He flinches rlly hard when i bring in the tool for him to sniff and his shoulders arch in with an arched back and flat ears. He avoid contact but ducking and dodging while maintaining an alert posture with wide dialed eyes. He continues to meow when spoken to but did not allow any contact. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: 10/11/25 Upon interacting with him again today, Kit Kat appears to be deteriorating and is no longer tolerant of touch. He begins to flinch and jerk away from the scratcher tool when petting is attempted inside the den. He will vocalize and eventually escalate to aborted lunges at the tool before he attempts to bite the tool.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Kit Kat would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/20/25 On the top part of his kennel, Kit Kat sits with wide eyes, forward ears and his tail tightly wrapped around his body; he has no reaction when the assessor opens the kennel door or speak to him, but his ears almost flatten into his head when the pointer tool is slowly brought close for him to sniff. He slowly starts to back away to avoid contact with the tool, and as the tool briefly pets the top of his head, he quickly raises his paw and starts to look around the kennel for an escape. Kit Kat did not tolerate any petting as his eyes were alert, wide and dilated with his ears now airplane to his head and his paw raised ready to strike the tool. When the tool was ran down his back for petting, he shuffled himself backwards, falling off onto the top part of the den where he sat extremely tense with hunched in shoulders flat ears, fixating on the pointer tool for any further movement. When the assess-a-hand was introduced, he quickly swatted and striked the tool with force, while continuing to back away ducking and dodging. Kit Kat once again did not tolerate any petting as he continued to strike the tool before quickly, jumping off of the den and entering inside. 10/11/25 Upon re-eval, Kit Kat is displaying behaviors more similar to those he presenting during his initial eval and seems to be deteriorating compared to the small amount of progress seeming to be made in his enrichment notes. On approach, he is in his den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out of the den. When the assessor lifts the linen covering the den door, he begins to stress vocalize and as the scratcher tool is introduced into the den, he flinches and attempts to avoid touch from the tool, pressing to the side of the den. He remains hunched and tense, vocalizing and hissing as he jerks and flinches away from the touch and tool - also seeming to be looking for a way to flee out of the den. After a moment, he escalates to aborted lunges at the tool before he attempts to bite the tool. Pick up is not attempted. Kit Kat is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment , and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
