Cherry
Hello, my name is Cherry. My animal id is #217005. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/18/2024.
Cherry is at risk due to kennel stress and deterioration in care. Cherry has shown social behavior with the handler and does engage with enrichment games but She also displayed repetitive stress-related behaviors, such as barking at the corner of her kennel, heavy salivating, panting, and dilated pupils. Cherry frequently climbs kennel walls, vocalizes excessively, and shows frustration by jumping and crying as other dogs pass by. Medically Cherry has Dental disease and a Mass.

Cherry was able to settle quickly and appeared relaxed as she was lying on the floor by a familiar handler's feet. Familiar handler noted Cherry's medication tray was empty. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Cherry jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful- When Cherry collar is grabbed she displayed heavy panting and head whips. Begin by lightly touching her collar and immediately rewarding her with treats and praise to create a positive association. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of the touch as she becomes more comfortable. Pair these sessions with calming exercises and commands like "sit" and "stay" to help her remain relaxed. Please see the handout on the decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety- Cherry displayed low tense body, licking, heavy panting in the care center. To address Cherry's anxiety, start by creating a calm and predictable environment with a consistent routine. Gradually desensitize her to the care center by introducing her to the space in short, positive sessions, rewarding her with treats and praise for calm behavior. Use calming aids like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps if needed. Practice relaxation techniques such as "settle" or "mat training" to help her feel secure. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration-In the prior home it is reported the Cherry will bark when strangers knocked on the house door. When coming out of kennel Cherry displayed high hackles/tense body when passing other dogs.Use counter-conditioning to pair the sight of other dogs with positive experiences like treats and praise. Teach focus commands such as "watch me" to redirect her attention during walks. Practice impulse control exercises like "stay" and "leave it" to improve her self-control. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key, and consulting a professional trainer can provide additional support. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
