Animal Profile

Rocky Baby

Hello, my name is Rocky Baby. My animal id is #241830. I am a desexed male brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/11/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Rocky Baby is at risk due to behavior concerns. When he first arrived, he was initially fearful of staff, escalating to hard barking and growling. Over time, he warmed up and allowed staff to pet him while displaying a wiggly body. More recently, Rocky Baby has been inconsistent with his walks. At times, he refuses to leave the building or return to his kennel; on other days, he refuses to enter the building. These behaviors occur with select staff, making him difficult to walk at times. Medically, Rocky Baby is apparently healthy.

Rocky Baby came to the shelter as an owner surrender due to allergies in the home. He can be intense at first impressions, especially behind his kennel door, but once he's out and given space, a very different side of him appears. Rocky Baby warms up quickly, showing a loose body, wagging tail, and a strong desire for attention. He enjoys being close to his people, leans in for pets, and can be playful, affectionate, and enthusiastic once he feels safe. My Ideal Home Rocky Baby is looking for an experienced, adult-only home that understands fearful or reactive dogs. He will thrive with adopters who can read canine body language, move at his pace, and use consistent, force-free training. A structured environment with clear routines, daily physical and mental outlets, and thoughtful management will help him succeed. He does best with slow introductions to new people and situations and benefits from enrichment like sniffing activities and food puzzles. Good with Kids? No. Rocky Baby is recommended for an adult-only home, as he can become uncomfortable and defensive around new or unpredictable interactions. Good with Other Pets? Rocky Baby has lived with another dog in the past and was reported to be playful with familiar dogs. He is reactive to unfamiliar dogs on leash and may bark or growl, so careful management and slow introductions are essential. His history with cats is unknown. Other Fun Facts Rocky Baby loves enrichment activities like snuffle mats and lick mats, enjoys rubbing against his handlers for affection, and can be delightfully goofy once he's comfortable. He has a high energy level, enjoys play and exploration, and forms strong bonds with people he trusts. With the right support, Rocky Baby has the potential to be a loyal and deeply rewarding companion A volunteer writes: Rocky Baby 💙 at only 8 months old Rocky is already a tall drink of water! I love seeing him on his bed in his kennel, his long legs gathered info a bouquet. Rocky was brought to the shelter a month ago due to allergies in the home. He was and still is a baby - in both age and mannerisms. He's floppy and playful,

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Rocky Baby's history and observed potential for defensive escalations, we recommend that he to be placed in an adult-only home.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Rocky is reported ot have destructive tendencies and escape the house/yard. Please see the handout on Destructive behaviors. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Rocky would jump up on handlers often during his assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Rocky is reported to hard bark and growl at strangers. This has been observed during his intake and during his assessment. He has warmed up quickly when approached slowly and moving at his own pace. His signs of discomfort must be respected; he should never be forced to interact, and should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach, and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Rocky Baby. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease his quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Rocky Baby is reported to hard bark and growl at unfamiliar dogs on leash. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
