Magnetite
Hello, my name is Magnetite. My animal id is #225480. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/25/2025.
Magnetite is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Magnetite was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/10/25 Vol. Magnetite was lying in the back of the cubby. He ran up to the front when I opened the kennel door, ears forward, pupils slightly dilated. He approached the tool with the puree hesitantly and then licked it but at the second offering, he swiped hard at the tool. I withdrew the tool and opened the main condo door, looking at him through the portal and speaking quietly. He continued to make eye contact, blinking occasionally. I put out some chewy treats, and he came out onto the ledge of the main condo to get them, picking them up in her mouth and bringing them back into the cubby, and then coming out altogether and eating them while perched on the ledge. When I extended the tool again to attempt to pet him, he swiped hard at it, but continued to make eye contact, blinking occasionally, Continues to be conflicted. 5/15/25 FB26 Magnetite was at the front, softly meowing in response to sweet talk. She appeared curious, looked around, and sniffed the hand but then slowly withdrew. When petting was attempted, she hissed and spat, then walked off to hide inside the cubby. 5/21/25 Vol. Magnetite was curled up at front of cubby. She hissed and flattened her ears when approached, then eventually returned slow blinks. She crept out onto shelf in main kennel to investigate a catnip mouse, then returned to cubby. She swatted at squeeze up on scratcher tool, then ate the treat enthusiastically. She accepted more squeeze up from scratcher tool, keeping her body crouched in cubby and poking her head into main kennel to eat. She hissed occasionally, but continued to eat squeeze up readily. After interaction she came to front of kennel to drink water. 5/28/25 Vol. Magnetite was sitting upright in cubby behind privacy paper. When approached, she poked her head into main kennel. Her eyes were wide, with pupils partly dilated. She swatted when offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, then immediately ate the treat. She accepted more squeeze up without swatting, coming partway out onto shelf in main kennel. She kept her body crouched low, and appeared tense. She sniffed at a feather toy, then grabbed it in her mouth and took it into her cubby, where she played by herself for several minutes, jumping and rolling around.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 04/28/25 Magnetite is a shy, timid, and independent cat. She was lying down in loaf position on top of the den with a tense body and wide eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, she leans back. She hisses when reaching close to offer treats. She allows brief petting on the head and cheeks but hisses again and lip licks. When stroking her body, she looks back to focus on the assessor's hand and hisses. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 05/29/2025 Magnetite was at the front of the top cubby when the assessor approached. When the door opened Magnetite immediately hissed and low grumbled. She backed into the cubby half way, keeping her eyes on the assessor while continuing to vocalize in a low grumble. As assessor slowly approached with a Churu squeeze up, Magnetite slowly showed interest and sniffed the squeeze up. In between low grumbles, Magnetite ate the squeeze up. When the assessor moved her hand closer to Magnetite with the treat still in hand, Magnetite hissed and swatted the assessor's hand with force, and wakled into the main cubby to avoid any further interaction. Magnetite tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
