At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Julixza

Julixa is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Julixza is a diabetic cat - she will need long-term insulin administration and vet care as diabetes is most often a lifelong disease in cats. We are unable to appropriately manage diabetes in shelter.

Max is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the shelter environment. He is now displaying signs of severe fear, anxiety, and stress. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Bella Lullaby

Bella Lullaby is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent, high energy, border frustrated and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. he is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. Pixie Newt Marigold is an adult intact male cat with a poor appetite in shelter. He is recovering from an upper respiratory infection. Recommending placement ASAP for a quiet environment out of the shelter to recover.

Cheese

Cheese is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cheese in care has been struggling to acclimate to the kennel environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Cheese has began to kennel fight intensely leaving and entering kennel, lunging and hard barking at dogs, and outside is reactive to other dogs by pulling hard on leash, having to be refocused each time, and maintains a heavy pant with a difficulty to settle on his own. Medically, Cheese is Apparently healthy.

Apollo

Apollo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Apollo initially was uncomfortable with being leashed to be removed from his kennel. He had escalated to snapping at the leash when presented, dodging the leash, and could be difficult to remove from the kennel at times. Apollo is accepting of treats, so handlers are using treats as an incentive to help lure him to the front of the kennel and with the leashing process. Apollo when outside is aloof with staff, flinching when being pet and panting heavily. Medically, Apollo was diagnosed with CIRDC.

Kola

Kola is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kola has been observed to bite and tug the leash into kennel when handlers are trying to leash him and jump up high biting and tugging the leash while on walks. While leash biting Kola has almost caught handlers hands. Kola has also been observed to kennel fight with the other dogs in the room when walking past them and one time charge at a dog in the adjacent pen. When out with handlers Kola has been observed to participate in enrichment games such as LATTE. Medically Kola has Periodontal Disease.

Kuro is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he has stage II Periodontal Disease.

Froyo

Froyo is at risk due to behavior concerns. During his time at the Care Centers, Froyo has shown signs of high anxiety and struggles to settle. When anxious, he exhibits displacement behaviors, such as mouthing staff hands, as seen during his assessment and off-leash interactions. Around other dogs, Froyo becomes vocal, barking at them in the pens, and darting side to side and pulling in their direction. He appears frantic during walks and was once observed spinning in circles in the elevator. On one occasion, he jumped toward a staff member who had his back turned, reaching as high as the staff member’s head. Froyo is treat motivated and will have zoomies in the pens. Medically, Remington has dental disease and dermatitis

Riot

Riot is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. When he first arrived at the care center, Riot was fearful, tense and hypervigilant. He would flinch whenever touched. Over time, Riot has warmed up with handlers seeking attention and allowing petting. However, he struggles to adjust to kennel life and has been observed to resource guard items and leash bite. Medically, Riot has dental disease.

Canelo

Canelo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behaviors reported by his former owners in his previous homes. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. Mimi

Mimi is at risk due to medical and behavioral reasons. She has not been eating consistently while in shelter, likely secondary to high FAS. She has now developed a moderate upper respiratory infection that necessitates injectable antibiotics and supportive care, which further exacerbate her FAS. She will need continued antibiotic therapy and supportive care with placement, as well as a quiet place to decompress. Behaviorally, Mimi is fearful and prefers to hide in her den, though she was reported to be friendly and outgoing in a home environment.

Milo

Milo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Milo initially presented as fearful and escalated to higher-level warnings when attempting to remove her from the kennel. As her stay progressed, Milo warmed up to handlers and staff, accepting treats and petting. Milo has displayed reactivity to dogs while in her kennel - hard barking and barking. While in her adopter's home, Milo was reported to not be able to settle in the home and would bark throughout the night. On one occasion while barking, the adopter was attempting to get Milo to stop barking when she escalated to snapping at the adopter twice eventually making contact but did not break skin. Medically, Milo is apparently healthy.

Tj

TJ is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. He has a multiple bite history in his previous home. He has been fearful at the care center, avoiding leashing and thrashing once leashed. He has improved over time with a slow approach but he still remains avoidant of interaction. Medically, he is overweight.

Remington

Remington is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. At the Care Centers, Remington has been social with handlers and has allowed petting. However, he has shown various arousal behaviors, including mounting, leash biting, and more recently, intense kennel fighting when passing by other dogs. These behaviors, combined with the stress of the shelter environment, seem to be overwhelming him—he was recently seen licking his transfer door. Remington is currently undergoing training to address his arousal issues and resource guarding. Medically, Remington has dental disease and dermatitis.

Sounder

Sounder is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Sounder has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains shut down despite best efforts to keep her comfortable and socialize. Initially, Sounder would press her body or face against the kennel wall to avoid leashing. Once out of her kennel, Sounder is avoidant of interaction and will seek an exit at times. While there have been occasions where handlers attempt to pet or have pet Sounder, she remains visibly uncomfortable with the contact. Medically, Sounder is apparently healthy.

Jalapeño

Jalapeno is at risk due to behavioral and medical reasons. Jalapeno has shown significant fear during her time at the shelter. She often appears tense, with wide eyes, a tucked tail, and a strong desire to escape while avoiding interaction with handlers. When out on walks, she tends to hesitate and pull back. Although she has started to warm up to certain staff members—showing a softer demeanor and allowing some handling—she still remains very fearful outside. This fear causes her to flatten to the ground, making walks challenging, and sometimes, she needs to be carried out due to her intense anxiety about her surroundings. Medically, Jalapeno currently has CIRDC, is receiving treatment, and has had a deceased appetite.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. When she first arrived at the care center, she exhibited tense behaviors, including hard barking, snapping, and lunging at handlers while in her kennel. However, she became receptive to treats and gradually warmed up to the staff over time. As her stay continued, Costa Rica began displaying signs of social arousal and high anxiety, such as dilated eyes, panting and head flipping when touched and spinning away, which were noted during her handling assessment. She was also observed becoming tense while engaging with toys. Despite these behaviors, she remains social with certain staff members. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Rza

Rza is on the at-risk list due to behavior. Although she tolerates petting and attention in the shelter when given enough time to warm up, she has an extremely challenging time adjusting to a new home environment as observed during her first few days in shelter and in the foster home. She has recently displaying signs of fear, anxiety, or stress when staff attempt to clean or feed around her kennel. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Cooper

Cooper is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Cooper is social outside of kennel, accepting treats, pets, and enjoys training sessions. However, he continues to display signs of fearfulness while in the Care Centers, such as thrashing and head whipping when being returned to his kennel. During a brief adoption, no behavioral concerns were reported, he was returned due to allergies. Since his return, Cooper was made behavior only due to his difficulty when returning to kennel and attempting to snap at staff. He has allowed handling and sometimes is responsive to treats and toys. Medically, Cooper has periodontal disease and is recovering from an open wound on his second digit of his right hind paw. He came into care missing his third digit on his right hind paw as well.

Jasmine

Jasmine is currently on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Jasmine has began to deteriorate in care despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Jasmine has began to leash bite intensely in her kennel when attempting to bring her out for her walks, she begins to tug intensely and has to be coaxed with a toy in order to be removed from kennel, make it difficult to walk her safely in the care center. Jasmine has also began to kennel fight with neighboring dogs when exiting kennel, but is very social with staff. Medically, Jasmine has a mass and is overweight.
