Boogie Woogie
Hello, my name is Boogie Woogie. My animal id is #245844. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/17/2026.
Boogie Woogie is at risk for behavioral concerns. Boogie Woogie arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Boogie Woogie was noted to be social during intake, allow all handling with loose body, and was treat receptive. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Boogie Woogie has shown signs of deterioration. Boogie Woogie has been observed to be consistently hyper-salivating in kennel, at times covering his kennel door with saliva. At time Boogie Woogie has also been observed to be pressing his face against the kennel door, spin in kennel biting his tail, and heavily panting. Boogie Woogie is also showing signs of decreasing threshold for arousal; in one instance he was reported to leash bite and repeatedly jump to mouth staff members. When not over threshold, Boogie Woogie remains social with staff. Medically, Boogie Woogie is apparently healthy.

Boogie Woogie arrived as a stray (no ID) and is still learning about shelter life. He's a calm, curious fellow who enjoys quiet moments and gentle attention - a mellow companion who does best when things are low-key and relaxed. My Ideal Home A calm, low-traffic home with adults only where Boogie Woogie can decompress and learn a predictable routine. He'll thrive with patient caregivers who can offer gentle guidance, short walks, and consistent positive reinforcement as he settles in. Good with Kids? No - it's unknown whether he has experience with children, and staff recommend an adults-only home so he can relax without extra stimulation. Good with Other Pets? Unknown - there's no confirmed history with other dogs or cats. Introductions should be slow and supervised to make sure he feels comfortable and safe. Other Fun Facts Boogie Woogie is affectionate and quietly curious - he enjoys gentle pets and attention, and seems to appreciate a relaxed pace. He's a great match for someone looking for a calm, devoted companion.

Summary (5):: 2/15/26: (PM WALK) Boogie Woogie is lying down on his kuranda bed in kennel. Handler unlocks the kennel and he lifts his head and approaches the front. He is easily leashed and taken out of the room. Boogie is brought to the street where he pulls moderately on the street. Handler puts him in a leash harness and he walks with a loose body and very mild pulling besides the handler. Boogie relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. Boogie is brought back inside and returned to his kennel, he plants outside and treats are tossed. He does not enter and has to be muscled into the kennel. 2/15/26: (PM) Staff reported that Boogie Woogie was pressing his face against the kennel door and licking the door. He would stand in the corner of the kennel licking it and heavy panting. 2/15/26: It is reported that Boogie is heavily salivating and pressing his muzzle against the kennel door.
Summary (6):: 2/14/26: Boogie Woogie is lying on his bed at back of kennel as handler approaches. He was calm and had a soft body. As handler unlocked door he came to the front with a loose and wiggly body and was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. He did see a dog across the street and pulled a little to the direction of the dog but handle called his name and he turns and continued walk. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 2/13/26: Boogie Woogie is sitting at the front of his kennel. He is licking the glass door, and rubbing his teeth on it trying to get a grip. When the leash is presented, he sniffs it and allows for it to be placed on him. He is walked to the street where he pulls hard from spot to spot. When called he will approach handler and take treats gently. He returns to kennel without issue. 2/13/26: Boogie Woogie has been reported to leash bite while being in the interaction. When an ACS attempts leash him as he is loose in the room, Boogie jumps up for the leash; he bites and tugs, and growls while doing so. The primary ACS tosses treats, but there are slightly effective. Additionally, Boogie began to jump on and mouth the ACS' repeatedly. The primary ACS is able to use another leash to leash Boogie and return him to kennel. 2/11/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Boogie Woogie may be stressed in kennel--he pants and drools a lot standing at the front of his kennel
Summary (7):: 02/11/26: Boogie Woogie is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he jumps on the kennel door but is redirected using treats and walks allows leashing. He walks with handler outside, pulling towards the dog kennels he passes before relieving himself once outside. He walks with handler pulling moderately and accepting tossed treats throughout the interaction. He walks for a while and passes people on the street without issue, he will occasionally stop to sniff and walks for a while before being brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash and returns following tossed treats. 2/8/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Boogie Woogie is biting his tail and spinning in kennel. It is also reported that he is dog reactive. 2/7/26: Staff reports Boogie's kennel door is covered with saliva. 1/28/26 (Gate-greet): Boogie Woogie is sitting at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking to the yard, Boogie tries to pull towards two large dogs present, but the handler shortens the leash. He is then brought to the yard (see dog-dog notes). In between interactions, Boogie walks and sniffs around. He jumps on the handlers and takes treats from them. Boogie also focuses on a small dog in the pen adjacent to his. Afterwards, the handler brings Boogie Woogie inside; when returning to his kennel, Boogie doesn’t enter on his own, but with soft speaking from the handler, he enters. 1/24/26: VOLUNTEER: Strong, curious and independent. Very big sniffer on his walks. No concerning behavior seen but not easily redirectable on walks. Easy to leash and exit the kennels but is reluctant to return to his kennel. Resisted entering, needing to use treats, show them to him and throw them onto his bedding and muscled a bit with the leash to encourage him back in. 1/18/26: Handler approaches the kennel. Boogie Woogie is loose and wiggly and approaches the door. He accepts treats. As door is opened he begins pawing and pushing through the door with his head. He is leashed with treat distractions to reduce jumping. He exits the building while pulling on the leash. He continues to pull hard outside. He eliminates then walks. As people pass he stares but is not fixated. He does not respond to noises from the handler to break his focus, but moves on from the person of interest on his own. Upon return to kennel he resists by freezing and pulling back. He is not persuaded by treats to enter the kennel. He is muscled back into kennel

Summary:: Loose and wiggly body
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Boogie Woogie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Boogie Woogie has been obsvered to become tense and hover of toys in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Boogie's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. On Leash Reactivity: Boogie has been obsvered to stare at people with a tense body, this behavior is not able to be redirected. Boogie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
