Note from volunteer from January 8th: Tyson was very sweet overall. He knows sit, paw, loves treats, and he gently jumped and hugged staff, and enjoyed getting pet. A total snuggler. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary (5):: 1/15/26: It is noted on the whiteboard, that on 1/14, Tyson is "chewing on (kennel) bars".
Summary (6):: 1/7/26 (Late Entry)[Playgroup]: Tyson is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. The handler brings Tyson to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog). After the interaction, the handler places Tyson on a drag leash. As the handler is seated, he jumps on them, soliciting and allowing pets. As dogs walk past, Tyson doesn't react to them. Afterwards, the handler switches the leashes and brings Tyson inside, returning him to kennel with ease.
Summary (7):: 1/3/26: Canine Behavior notes that Tyson has been noted to exit and enter kennel easily since being moved to a bottom kennel 1/2/26: Tyson has been observed to muzzle punch in kennel and redirect onto a handler's leg. Upon approach, the handler presented their hand when Tyson is in his kennel, since he was barking a lot; Tyson then muzzle punched the kennel bars while showing teeth. After the handler carries him out of kennel and places him on the ground, Tyson reacts to a dog in a crate outside the room, who is also reacting back. When the handler pulls him away from the crate, Tyson redirects onto the handler's right thigh and treat pouch. It left a small indent on the handler's thigh. The handler was able to walk him and return with ease. 12/29/25- Tyson is at the front of his top kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed. Handler softly talks to him and he comes more to the front. He allows handler to pick him up and he is taken for a street walk. He has a mild pull on the street and is social with handler. He takes treats with a firm pressure. Another dog is near and he has no reaction to them and sniffs around. He is taken for his assessment where he is collared and he follows command for paw, he is rewarded. He is leashed and he retreats a little when handler goes to pick him up. They stop and pet him, he then allows handler to pick him up and return to his top kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Tyson is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Tyson.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for redirection and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to barking and growling towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. Due to the potential for redirection we recommend a single pet home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Tyson's previous owner states that he will jump up when excited. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Tyson's previous owner states that he is fearful when held/ restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Tyson to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Tyson's previous owner states that he might hard bark and growl when contact is not on his terms. It is important to move slowly with Tyson, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Tyson's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home and will whine and pace. He is also anxious when left alone. If Tyson displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Tyson's previous owner states that he will react to strangers and small dogs that approach. While in care Tyson has been obsvered to muzzle punch the kennel and redirect onto the handler's leg. Tyson will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
