Smoke

Hello, my name is Smoke. My animal id is #247283. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/10/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Smoke is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In his previous home it was reported Smoke will redirect on their other dog while on walks while react to bikes, cats, and other dogs on leash. These incidents have broken skin and became unmanageable. During his stay in the care center Smoke has been observed to be highly kennel reactive. Noted to lunge towards the other dogs in the kennel room and kick off the walls. He will also pull hard towards the dogs in the pop up crates. Medically, Smoke has otitis externa and is underweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary (7):: 2/19/26: Smoke is observed to pull hard towards the dogs in pop up crates. When reentering the kennel room, Soke begins lunging towards the other dogs and kicks off the wall. The handler has to use both hands and use a very short leash to keep him away from the other dogs. Smoke continues to lunge towards the neighboring dog and has to be muscled into kennel. 2/19/26: It is reported that Smoke is highly kennel reactive. While exiting and entering the kennel, Smoke vocalizes and pushes off the handler to get closer to the kennels. He also pulls and reacts towards the pop-up crates in the hallway. 2/17/26: Smoke is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He jumps up softly on his hind legs. He is easily leashed. Once out of the kennel, he darts suddenly to the side towards the other dogs in kennel to kennel fight, vocalizing (hard barking, growling). He is brought to the yard for playgroup where he growls and barks at a dog through the gate. Upon return, he hesitates to get back into kennel because he is barking at the dog in the kennel next to him. 2/13/26 (assessment): Smoke is at the front of his kennel with a soft boy; the handler feeds him a treat and leashes him. As they walk out, the handler drops treat in front of Smoke, which he eats as goes. On the street, Smoke walks ahead with little to no leash tension. He allows pets and takes treats from the handler, jumping on them with a few times. Smoke also shows slight interest in passersby. Before entering, Smoke notices a dog a few feet away; he stops and stares at them with a stiff body, but disengages when he handler calls him to enter. Smoke is then brought inside for his assessment (see notes); as the handler walks Smoke into the room, he looks at the kennel with a slightly tense body but returns to his kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Smoke is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Smoke.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to kennel reactivity we recommend a home with no children. Single-Pet Home/Recommended No Dog Parks: Due to Smokes previous bite history with dogs and his reported reactivity, we recommend a single pet home for Smoke and that he avoid dog parks. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During medical exams Smoke was reported to be tense and whale eye during certain examinations. It is important to always go slow and give Smoke the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Smoke would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History (Dog): Smoke has in the past gotten into fights with his fellow resident dog on walks and has bitten, breaking skin. On Leash Reactivity: Smoke is reported to react to cats and bikes while on leash. While in care Smoke has been obsvered to be highly kennel reactive, noted to vocalize and push off the handler to reach the other dogs. Smoke may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
