Animal Profile

Maurine

Hello, my name is Maurine. My animal id is #241560. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 1/10/2026.

Maurine is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Maurine has been social with handlers and caretakers during her stay in care, her kennel stress is worsening despite the best efforts to keep her comfortable. She is jumping to the top of her kennel and scraping her nose on the inside of the kennel as she continues to jump up. Medically, Maurine is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Meet Maurine! Maurine came to us as an owner surrender after her family realized they couldn't manage her on-leash reactivity. She's a high-energy, affectionate dog who loves being near her people, cuddles, car rides, and playtime with squeaky toys. Maurine has a fun, puppy-like personality and is very food motivated-she adores fruits, chicken, wet foods, and peanut butter! She's crate trained and knows basic commands like sit, stay, paw, come, go, and heel. My Ideal Home Maurine needs a calm, patient home where she is the only pet. She thrives in a structured environment with adopters experienced with strong, reactive dogs and committed to reward-based, force-free training. A home without children under 13 and no other animals is ideal. Daily walks, mental stimulation, and consistent training will help her thrive. Good with Other Pets? No - Maurine has a history of on-leash reactivity toward other dogs and hasn't had experience with cats. She is best as a single-pet dog. Leash Manners Maurine is very strong and can pull hard on the leash. She benefits from a front-clip harness or head halter and needs ongoing positive reinforcement training to improve her leash manners. She may bark, growl, or lunge at other dogs or small animals on walks, so controlled socialization is recommended. Other Fun Facts Maurine is a social and affectionate couch potato who loves cuddles and brushing. She enjoys tug-of-war, car rides, meeting new people, and playing with squeaky toys. She is very food motivated and responds beautifully to positive reinforcement. Maurine shows affection on her own terms and thrives in a calm, patient environment where she can feel safe and loved.

Summary (6):: 1/20/26: Maurine is quiet in her kennel when a handler enters the room from the opposite end. The handler walks over to the whiteboard to write when she notices the handler. She is leashed with ease and pulls hard to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). She is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Maurine walks ahead of the handler with a lot leash tension, constantly pulling forward. The handler calls Maurine to get her attention, but she pays no mind.The handler then uses a squeaker and Maurine turns to look at the handler. The handler shows Maurine a treat and gives her the "sit" command, but Maurine, instead, jumps on the handler with her front paws. Once Maurine jumps off the handler, the handler gives her a treat. Maurine also does not react to dogs nearby. While walking through the building, Maurine stops and backs away from the handler. The handler, with gentle leash pressure, continues to walk Maurine in for her assessment. After her assessment, the handler leashes Maurine and returns her to kennel with ease.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Maurine's strength and lack of impulse control at times, we recommend a home with no children. No cats: Due to the concerning behavior reported about Maurine's reactivity to cats and other smaller animals in the previous adopter's home, we recommend for her to be placed in a home without cats or smaller animals at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Maurine has shown in the previous home, we feel that Maurine should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help her associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: When waiting for treats or when socially engaging with staff Maurine can become impatient and jump on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful: During her first intake and medical exams, Maurine was reported to display fearful behavior, dodging the leash and displaying a tense body and tucked tail. It is important to always go slow and give Maurine the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Maurine would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Strength/Leash Pulling: When walking Maurine staff have reported her to be very strong and to pull hard on leash. It is recommended that she be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish her strength through leverage, and that she be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low threshold for arousal/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Maurine was reported to break out of her leash and jump her previous adopter's fence and get loose. She is reported to hard bark, growl, and lunge at other dogs and small animals on leash. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration and arousal.
