Cioccolata
Hello, my name is Cioccolata. My animal id is #242736. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/1/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCioccolata is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cioccolata arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Cioccolata was noted to be social, loose bodied, and allowed all handling. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Cioccolata has been reported to be highly kennel reactive. In one instance Cioccolata's teeth were able make contact with a dog through kennel bars, this did not break skin. Recently staff have reported Cioccolata is redirectable with treats when moving through kennel rooms. With staff, Cioccolata remains social and allows all contact. Medically Cioccolata is noted to have dental disease and otitis externa.

Upon her arrival, Cioccolata was loose bodied and social with staff. Cioccolata has been showing increasing kennel reactivity during her stay at the Care Center making it difficult to handle her safely. Cioccolata has been observed to lunge with tense body and snap at occupied kennels. During one instance she was able to bite a dog in a neighboring kennel. With staff Cioccolata she remains social and treat motivated when outside on walks. We recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner that carefully manage her reactivity with force free, positive reinforcement. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Summary:: 12/16/25: Cioccolata greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. She then growls and tenses.
Summary (6):: 1/10/26: Cioccolata is at the front of her kennel neutral body barking. She stops when offered a treat. She is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and once out of kennel looks at the ground for treats. She is walked on the street where she walks ahead of handler, s;ightly aloof exploring. She will come to handler when called and will sit for treats. Treats are tossed as she she takes them hard. She allows petting along her torso and back. When returning to kennel, she looks for treats on the ground and goes into kennel after treats are tossed in. 12/25/25: (The process of removing Cioccolata from kennel is the same as the previous note on 12/24/25. Please refer to note). On the street, Cioccolata walks ahead with mild to moderate pulling. She sees other dogs, but is easily redirected with vocal cues and treats from the handler. Cioccolata also solicits and allows pets, as she jumps on the handler with a loose body. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Cioccolata to her kennel; they create a treat trail to her kennel, which she eats, and she enters with ease. 12/24/25: Cioccolata presents a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. The handler shows her some treats; they then remove Cioccolata out the kennel and drop the treats on the floor. She eats the food off the floor while exiting. While waiting for the elevator, a dog in a nearby crate barks at Cioccolata, but she pays attention to the handler as they feed her treat. During the elevator ride, Cioccolata receives pets from the handler. When walking outside, she jumps on staff members with a loose body and receive pets from them. On the street, Cioccolata walks ahead with mild leash tension. She sees a large dog across the street, but refocuses on the walk. Cioccolata also relieves herself an displays little to no interest in passersby. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash, and Cioccolata greets the same staff as earlier. After exiting the elevator, Cioccolata attempts to pull towards a dog nearby, as well as the same dog in the crate from earlier. Both times, the handler pulls her away and presents a treat. The handler creates a treat trail into the room; Cioccolata follows it and enters her kennel with ease.
Summary (7):: 12/23/25: ACS report that Cioccolata is kennel fighting intensely when returning to kennel. She is using her back legs to kick off the wall to kennel fight. For both exiting and entering the kennel room Cioccolata attempts to bite a neighboring dog (Winston) through the kennel bars. 12/22/25: ACS report that Cioccolata's kennel reactivity is really intense and that she bite a dog through the kennel bars. 12/17/25: Cioccolata has been observed to be reactive in her crate to the dog being returned to in the crate next to her. She stops when a handler covers her crate, blocking her view. 12/17/25: Cioccolata is at the front of the crate with a soft body and wagging tail. She has a loose body as she walks downstairs to the play yard. Cioccolata is placed on a drag leash and jumps up exuberantly towards the second handler in the pen. She is easily redirected with treats and continues to jump up towards the handlers. Cioccolata does a dog-dog interaction. She is then walked around the pens and is returned to kennel without issue. 12/15/25: Cioccolata is standing at the front of her crate barking as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would walk ahead of the handler and would hard stare at dogs across the street and nearby. She is able to be redirected with a squeaker and treats. She tries to pull towards the dog in their crate next to hers on the way back and is able to enter her crate when treats are tossed inside. 12/2/25: Cioccolata is at the front of her kennel with a soft body. As the handler leashes her, Cioccolate headbutts the kennel door a few times. She is easily leashed and brought out the room. Outside, Cioccolate sees a dog, but is easily redirecablet when the handler calls her and she approaches them. On the street, Cioccolate walks ahead with light pulling; she stops to relieve herself and shows no interest in passersby. When returning, Cioccolate sees a familiar handler walking; once the familiar handler is close to her, she approaches and jumps on them with a loose body, allowing pets. Cioccolate is then brought in for her assessment (see assessment notes. Upon returning to her kennel, Cioccolate walks close to the kennels; as the dogs in kennel begin to bark at her, Cioccolate begins to hard bark, bare teeth, and lunge towards those kennels. The handler quickly pulls her away and brings her to her kennel. Cioccolate attempts to do so with a kennel adjacent to hers, but the handler quickly muscles her into kennel and removes their leash

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cioccolata so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend and single pet home with no trips to the dog park. Place with a New Hope Partner: Due to escalating reactivity being observed in the Care Center, we recommend placement with with an experienced New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Bite History (Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: When reentering the kennel room Cioccolata was obsvered to pull towards the other dogs while hard barking, baring teeth, and lunging. She is recently obsvered to attempt to bite neigboring dogs through the kennel bars. Cioccolata will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
