Animal Profile

Doeby

Hello, my name is Doeby. My animal id is #183902. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/18/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow (nycha).

Doeby is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Doeby was returned to the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing restrictions. Upon intake Doeby was highly social with staff and allowed all handling. Doeby has become intensely dog reactive during her stay. Doeby has been reported to growl, pull towards, and hard bark at dogs. This has been observed to occur when moving past occupied kennels, crates, and when seeing dogs on walks; Doeby is difficult to redirect. Doeby's previous owners have noted that she did get along with another resident small dog and neighbor's dogs. With staff, Doeby continues to be social, treat motivated and allow all contact. Medically Doeby is apparently healthy.

Medically Doeby is apparently healthy. Meet Doeby! Doeby came back to ACC as an owner surrender because her family is moving and their new landlord won't allow a dog her size. She's a fun, high-energy girl who loves people, enjoys being out for walks, and can be very sweet once she feels comfortable. In the shelter, she can get overwhelmed by seeing other dogs up close, but she recovers quickly and does best with calm, confident handling and clear space. My Ideal Home Doeby would thrive with an experienced, patient adopter who can give her structure, daily outlets for her energy, and reward-based training. She'll do best in a home that can manage her dog reactivity (avoiding tight spaces, busy dog traffic, and dog parks) and help her decompress with consistent routines and calm introductions to new environments. Good with Kids? No young children (under 5). Doeby can be unsure in new situations and does best with a calmer household. She may be open to older, dog-savvy kids after a meet-and-greet. Good with Other Pets? Doeby has been reported as dog reactive and has barked/growled at dogs in the shelter environment, especially in close quarters. For her comfort and success, we recommend she be the only dog in the home and skip dog parks. She may do best with careful distance-based training and slow, structured exposures on walks. Other Fun Facts Doeby is playful, affectionate once she settles in, and loves being on the move. If you're looking for a people-loving companion and you're comfortable working through dog reactivity with patience and treats, Doeby is ready for her fresh start.

Summary:: 12/30/25: Doeby greets another dog at the gate with slightly tense body. She is muzzled for safety and allowed off leash with another dog. She remains very tense and moves around the other dog slowly. PREVIOUS STAY: 10/2/23: Lunges, whines, growls 10/4/23: Softer body, wags.

Summary (5):: 1/20/26: Handler approaches the kennel, Doeby presents with a loose wiggly body at the front of the kennel. He jumps up on his hind legs when the leash is presented but is easily leashed with treats. While exiting the room he pulls forwards moderately and frequently looks over at the dogs in kennels, but exits without incident. He jumps on second handler (familiar) in the elevator in a social manner (loose body, soft expression). After exiting the building leash pressure is relaxed. Doeby checks in with handler without prompting. Doeby also checks in with handler with prompting (noises) and offers a sit then is given a treat which he accepts. Handler pets him and he remains loose but still. He pulls towards a person 15 feet away in a social manner (loose body). He next sees a dog 20 feet away and rears up on his hind legs while hard barking and pulling. Shortly after the dog is out of sight, Doeby quickly recovers. He later fixates on a dog 50 feet away and is redirected with a squeaker. He later pulls and lunges toward a pigeon. He reenters the building with less pulling and tension than upon exit and is easily returned to his kennel 1/16/26: Note on whiteboard for Doeby "Very dog reactive, avoid crates, go to empty yard" 1/13/26: Doeby is is loose bodied toward front of kennel as handler approaches. Doeby is easily leashed and exits kennel, pulls hard out of kennel room. pulls hard toward crate by elevator, but is cued away verbally and with treats. Doeby's pulling becomes more moderate on sidewalk, but is consistent. Doeby allows petting, neutral frame, and sits when handler reaches into treat pouch without being cued. Doeby sees a LMB with staff, approximately 20 feet away, however is easily refocused on handler with treats. Doeby is walked back to kennel, he pulls hard into kennel however keeps his head turned toward kennels as he passes. Doeby re-enters without issue. 1/8/26: It is noted on the whiteboard on 1/7 that Doeby is "very dog reactive. Pulls hard, needs harness. will chase pigeons". 01/07/26: Doeby is a fun, affectionate, and high-energy "spitfire" who loves meeting people and receiving butt scratches. While she is curious and enjoys her exercise, she is highly dog-reactive, particularly in tight spaces within the shelter or during walks. She performs best when handlers maintain a significant distance from other dogs; for example, proactively crossing the street is a necessary strategy during her outings. Additionally, Doeby disdains pigeons and will attempt to chase them if given the opportunity. 1/5/25: Doeby is reported to be spinning in kennel.

Summary (6):: 01/04/26: Doeby is at the back of her kennel as handler approaches, she approaches the front and accepts treats from handler gently before being leashed and brought out to the street for her walk. Outside Doeby pulls mildly and fixates on pigeons she sees. She passes people on the street without issue and walks with handler stopping to sniff and relieve herself or to accept treats from handler. When seeing dogs she fixates and is difficult to redirect, otherwise she walks without issue and after a while she is brought back inside and returns to kennel without issue. 01/02/26: Doeby is highly affectionate with her handler and loves to snuggle on the backyard bench. However, she is very dog-reactive, requiring handlers to be mindful when entering or exiting the building due to the presence of pop-up crates. She must also be kept at a distance from other dogs on the street. Because she will chase pigeons, she should be kept away from those in the backyard. Doeby particularly enjoys butt scratches and receiving treats. 1/2/26: Doeby is reported to be very dog reactive, and does not respond to toys or squeakers right away. 12/24/25: Doeby is toward front of kennel neutral body, sitting quietly. Doeby is easily leashed, once she exits kennel he turns head toward neighboring kennel, low-growls with tense body but maintains walking to exit of room. Once is hallway, Doeby recovers, allows all handling to remove a dirty sweater. She walks with neutral frame, minimal pulling. In driveway Doeby sees pigeons, pulls toward with low-body but loses interest once out of sight. Doeby is aloof, takes treats when offered but does not consistently respond to verbal cues. Doeby is walked back to MACC, enters kennel without issue. 12/19/25: Doeby is reported to be dog reactive. 12/19/25 (For assessment): Doeby is at the front with a loose, wiggly body. She is easily leashed and brought out her kennel. While walking out the room, Doeby barks at the dogs in the kennels. On the street, Doeby walks ahead with little to no leash tension; she occasionally stops to sniff and sniffs a passerby when the walk past. Doeby also pulls towards birds on the ground. The handler brings Doeby inside for her assessment. Afterwards, the handler returns Doeby to kennel with ease. 12/18/25: It is reported that Doeby is hypersalivating in kennel. While in the yard, Doeby is observed to be highly dog reactive and the handler had to keep her on a very short leash. When returning to kennel Doeby begins scrambling back to kennel.

Summary (7):: **Notes from previous stay at ACC in 2023. Was named Doe at this time.** 11/17/23: Doe is jumping up on kennel doors with a loose and wiggly body. She is leashed using treats as a lure. She pulls while walking on the street but will turn to handler periodically. She is rewarded for this behavior. She sees a dog across the street and pulls hard in that direction with a tense body but is easily moved away. She returns to kennel without issue. 11/9/23: Doe is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel where she is taken outside for a street walk. She walks nicely alongside handler. They work on the cue "look", rewarding Doe anytime she looks at handler. When a small dog passes by, Doe stands in place with a tense body, staring at the dog until it is further away. Doe is then brought back into the building where she barks and lunges at a dog down the hallway. She is returned to kennel without issue. 10/23/23 Doe was very excited at the front of the kennel wagging her tail. Doe was easily leashed, as she came out of the kennel she started to pull toward the other dogs in the room. On the street Doe alway keep tention on the leash, alway showing a soft body posture and a waggli tail. going back to the kennel she also pull toward the other dogs. 10/15/23: Doe is at the front with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and taken out to the yard where she pulls towards a reactive small dog in a neighboring pen. She lunges and growls in their direction and is taken to another pen where a drag leash is attached. She explores her surroundings and approaches handler loose and wiggly before jumping on them exuberantly, allowing petting. She is returned to kennel without issue. 10/10/23 Doe is at the front of her kennel, loose, she is easily leashed and walked out. Doe is taken on a street walk, she walks loosely at handlers side throughout. When handler calls Doe over, she approaches with a soft body, she leans in for petting and begins jumping up softly. After some time, she is easily leashed and returned without issue. 10/2/23- Doe was at the front of the kennel, she was barking and jumping up on the door with loose body. Handler gave Doe treats and was easily leashed. She was taken for a street walk. She walked next to handler with a loose leash and soft body. A cart was rolling by and Doe stopped, her ears pinned. Handler threw a treat down and Doe focused her attention back to handler. When a bike came by after, Doe didn't pay attention as it past. When coming back, she was passing another kennel room and barked at the dogs in the room. She was taken for her assessment, she was social with other handlers in the room. Another handler took her to the yard for a dog-dog interaction.

Date of intake:: 12/18/2025

Summary:: energetic, allowed petting, hard barks/lunges at dog she sees, ran into kennel

Date of initial:: 12/18/2025

Summary:: friendly and hyperactive on leash

ENERGY LEVEL:: Doeby is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Doeby.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to initial timidity we recommend a home with no young children. Recommended No Dog Parks: Due to owner reports of lunging at unfamiliar dogs we recommend future owners avoid taking her to dog parks.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Doeby is reported to be fearful with new people or environments. It is important to always go slow and give Doeby the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Doeby would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity: Doeby may lunge, growl, or bark at dogs on leash. As Doeby has lived with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. She will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
