At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Seven

Seven is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Coco

Coco is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Coco has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Pulling hard towards them with a tense body, lunging and growling. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected. Coco is reported to have a multiple bite history with dogs. With handlers Coco is observed to be social. Medically, Coco is overweight and has a mass near her anus that is a concern. Coco will need further testing and attention that we are unable to provide in-shelter.

Sugar

Sugar is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using the Fraidy Cat Club behavior modification program to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

He is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation. Shiver Me Timbers

Shiver Me Timbers is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Shiver has been observed to be high fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail and show whale eye. When approached by handlers Shiver begins trembling and seeking exit. Medically, Shiver has CIRDC.

Serenity

Serenity is at risk due to behavior concerns. While in her adopter's home, Serenity was reported to have been social with her adopter but escalated to biting two family members without warning or a clear trigger. The bites did break skin and drew some blood. In care, Serenity has been soft-bodied, and attention seeking. Medically, Serenity is apparently healthy.

Frosty Fish

Frosty Fish is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Frosty arrived to the care center as a stray. In the care center, Frosty takes treats gently and tolerates handling. However, Frosty is observed to repeatedly jump when highly anxious and over stimulated. Recently, this behavior has intensified as Frosty started jumping and mouthing a staff member shirt then their wrist and did not let go. The mouthing left red marks on their wrist and frosty continued jumping towards the handler with a open mouth. Medically, frosty fish is apparently healthy.

Tiny

Tiny is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Tiny enjoys squeeze-up treats and she came from a home with many other cats. The behavior team believes she may warm up quicker with the company of a resident cat.

Corvin

Corvin is at risk due to behavior concerns. Corvin was brought in as a stray, so her history and behavior prior to her arrival are unknown. When officers initially encountered her, Corvin displayed mixed signals, approaching them but then growling. During an attempt to guide her into their vehicle using her collar, Corvin suddenly turned and bit one officer's hands multiple times, causing puncture wounds. While in the Care Centers, Corvin exhibited fearful behavior and sensitivity around her neck. She was reported to tuck her tail during walks. When staff tried to clip a slip lead near her neck, she reacted by snapping at their hands. Despite her wariness, Corvin has shown interest in treats, eating them off the ground. Medically, Crovin has receently recovered from CIRDC.

Bruno

Bruno is at risk due to behavior concerns. Despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, Bruno has had difficulty acclimating to the shelter environment. Bruno does accept treats, solicits petting, and engages with toys and enrichment games. He persistently jumps up on his kennel door while drooling excessively and panting heavily. He can be difficult to leash at times due to either jumping or digging at the kennel door or frenetic movements as he cannot settle. Once outside, Bruno has displayed an increasing fixation on other dogs on walks. He hard pulls towards them to the point where he has reared up on his hind legs, swiping his front paws across handlers to gain more momentum towards the other dogs. Medically, Bruno is apparently healthy.

Bruno

Bruno is at risk due to behavior concerns. Bruno was brought to the Care Center after his owner passed away. He exhibits fearful behaviors and tends to avoid most interactions. When uncomfortable, Bruno has been reported to huff and vocalize. He lip licks, tenses up, and gives hard stares when staff attempt to engage with him. On walks, he was observed shaking and frantic while whining. However, Bruno has shown some social behaviors with certain staff members, such as wagging his tail in the kennel or climbing onto a handler he feels safe with. Medically, Bruno has CIRDC and is reported to be underweight.

Connor

Connor is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. he is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Raven

Raven is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Raven arrived to the care center after a bite with the finder. Raven bit and held the finder on the right hand leaving two puncture wounds, the finder didn't seek medical attention. Raven did have multiple other bite incident with the finder. In the care center, Raven is unable to be handled as she is growling, snapping, baring teeth and hard barking when attempting to leash. While leashed she flails and vocalizes. Medically Raven is apparently healthy.

Chico

Chico is at risk due to behavior concerns. Chico arrived to the care center as a stray, he was found tied to a fence and was growling, baring teeth and fearful. In the care center, Chico continues these behaviors when attempting to leash him in kennel. Chico will tense up, hard stare and then escalate to snarling, baring teeth, hard barking and muzzle punching the door. On walks he jumps whenever he hears a noise and turns/head whips frequently turning back to the handler. Medically, Chico has left inguinal cryptorchid. but is otherwise healthy.

Bobbie

Bobbie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Bobbie is beginning to deteriorate due to his length of stay. Bobbie has been social, outgoing, playful, and attention-seeking during his stay. But now he is becoming increasingly stressed in and out of his kennel. When in his kennel, Bobbie is spinning in circles, hypersalivating, while heavily panting. Outside of his kennel, Bobbie has red eyes, unable to settle or focus at times. Medically, Bobbie has dental disease.

Holmes

Holmes is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Holmes has displayed a concerning level of on-leash reactivity to other dogs and strangers. During an adoption interaction, Holmes began hard barking at other dogs as he passed on his way to the play yard. During the interaction, Holmes continued hard barking at potential adopters despite attempts to redirect him. When ending the interaction, Holmes attempted to redirect the two handlers that were conducting the interaction. He did not make contact but aimed at their legs and ankles. During his stay in care, Holmes has been anxious but tolerates leashing and some petting. Medically, Holmes has CIRDC and retained deciduous teeth.

Chillton

Chillton is on the at-risk list for behavioral and medical concerns. Chillton has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly stressed. He is becoming difficult to remove from the kennel and walk due to the intensity of his kennel fighting. Chillton digs at the kennel door, but once leashed he immediately rushes towards the kennel, lunging and hard barking at each. He repeats these behaviors when being returned to his kennel. Once back inside, he begins heavy panting, licking the kennel walls, with a flushed face and dilated eyes. Medically, Chillton has been diagnosed with Parvovirus and has started treatment. He will need further medical care than we are able to provide at ACC. Chillton also has conjunctivitis, dental disease, and dermatitis.

Gibbes

Gibbes is on the at-risk list for behavioral reasons. He is highly treat-motivated and enjoys enrichment activities, but his energy can escalate quickly, hyper-focusing on toys causing him to have self-inflicted wounds. While he is often friendly and engaging with handlers, Gibbes has shown a high degree of fear particularly in response to sudden noises, resulting in attempts to escape, whining, and urinating on himself. Medically Gibbes has a heart murmur.

Rosie

Rosie is at risk due to medical reasons. She was found one month ago and was reported to have frequent seizures since then. No seizure activity has been noted since coming to ACC. She is currently being managed on keppra and gabapentin, but she will require continued care and diagnostics to determine the underlying cause of the seizures. Behaviorally, she is quiet and allows all handling.

Super-Pup

Super-Pup is at risk due to behavior concerns. Super -Pup has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly fearful and shut down despite efforts to interact and socialize. His body remains tense, is reluctant to walk, but tolerates pets. He does not seek out interaction, petting, or treats. At times, he seeks out a place to hide. Medically, Super-Pup is apparently healthy.

Zoey

Zoey is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Zoey has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center, noted to dodge the leash. Zoey has been observed to escalate to baring teeth and snapping at the leash. Zoey is also observed to not be receptive to coaxing, squeakie sounds, or high value treats. Medically, Zoey has been placed on a specialty diet due to diarrhea.

Sweet Sister Francis

Sweet Sister Francis is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Francis has been observed to be fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to be hypervigilant, tense, and trembling. When approached by handlers Francis has been observed to cower away and begin seeking exit. Medically, Sweet Sister Francis is receiving treatment for CIRDC and may have pneumonia.
