Giddy Up
Hello, my name is Giddy Up. My animal id is #216033. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/5/2024.
Giddy Up is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Giddy Up in care has been intensely leash biting with staff, and only refocused for short amount of times before leash biting again. Giddy Up is also struggling to settle in his kennel, panting heavily and spinning off his kennel door when approached in kennel. Medically, Giddy Up has mild dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. A volunteer writes: This bouncy, playful, exuberant boy is Giddy Up and he's just so cute in every way! He's very social - turning into a 45-pound wiggle-worm when I pet him. And during his photo shoot, he crawled into a volunteer's lap, hanging out there with his paws draped over her legs, indulging in all their "awwwws" while munching on treats. His friendliness seems to extend to other dogs, too - he did very well when we introduced him to a different dog on two separate occasions - greeting them both with a soft, wiggle body and acting appropriately when one of them made him uncomfortable. Giddy also loves toys - whether tossing it to himself or shaking it around, he really knows how to have fun! Giddy can get over-aroused during social interactions, causing him to jump up on his handlers, so he'll need to be taught to remain calm in exciting situations (using only force-free, positive-reinforcement training). But I think he'll be a great student - he's very social and attentive; highly treat-motivated; and already knows "sit". Being out of a stressful shelter environment should also help a lot. Come and meet this lovable (and handsome) boy at our Queens shelter today!

Summary:: Due to Giddy-Up entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 12/09/24 Giddy Up is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Giddy greets the novel male dog at the gate with a soft, wiggly body, offering a bounce. Giddy is taken to greet the novel male dog face-to-face. Giddy enters the pen exploring before approaching the novel male dog. Giddy wants to play, however, the novel male dog is making him uncomfortable as they bounce over to him. The novel male dog is persistent, attempting to make body contact. Giddy becomes avoidant, creating distance. Giddy will seek attention from one of the handlers present before being moved away due to the novel male dog's persistence. Giddy is returned to kennel. 12/08/24 Giddy-Up is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. The two will offer each other bounces and play bows at the gate, before allowing them to greet each other face-to-face. As Giddy enters the pen to greet her face-to-face, he exuberantly approaches her with a soft, wiggly frame. Giddy will scent the novel female dog as she scents him as well, exchanging minimal body contact. Giddy will offer a play bow prior to them chasing each other for a few. Giddy and the novel female dog will then explore before returning to each other. The two will scent each other again before lightly bouncing around one another and engaging in minimal chase play. Giddy will periodically shake off, remaining soft and wiggly. Giddy is returned to kennel after they are separated.
Summary (6):: 1/10/25: Giddy up is at the front of his kennel panting heavily, spinning off the front kennel door and barking at the handler when approached. Giddy Up is easily leashed and brought out of his kennel where he pulls hard, and when outside the kennel room will begin to jump up and leash bite. Giddy Up is tossed treats when he begins to leash bite, and begins to eat them when scattered but begins to leash bite more if not refocused persistently. Giddy Up when outside, will begin to explore and leash bite more inconsistently, when Giddy Up hits the end to the leash, he turns and jumps up at the leash, grabbing it and tugging. The handler throws a toy when he begins to shake and hold, but leaves it on the sidewalk afterwards. Giddy up throughout the walk will leash bite, but as time goes on with the handler and engaging in treat scatters to help him relax he will leash bite less intensely, dropping the rope when the handler makes movements towards there marker pouch. Giddy up is brought back into kennel with no issue 01/02/25 (Trainer Note): Giddy Up is standing at the front of the kennel panting moderately as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Giddy Up engages with interest in the various enrichment items and participates readily when the handler asks him to sit and take a breath. Giddy Up is able to sit still for increased durations as the session continues. He is easily leashed and walked with decreased pulling back to the kennel. 12/27/24: Giddy Up was on his bed as handler approached his kennel. He then got up and started jumping and muzzle punching the door to get it to open. Once he was leashed, he pulled and zig zagged his feet across the floor as he walked to the live room for enrichment fun. He liked engaging in the lick mat and snuffle mat back and forth. He would take the stuffed toys and place them on the bed. He pulled on the way back to his kennel and was hesitant to walk in before going in willingly. 12/18/24 (Trainer Note): Giddy Up is standing at the front of the kennel jumping repeatedly up onto the glass as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Giddy Up engages readily with the enrichment and handler is able to begin to ask for Giddy Up orienting towards them and taking a breath before moving onto the next item. Giddy Up visibly relaxes, eventually shaking off. He jumps up when the handler leashes him, increasing the intensity of his panting and moving frenetically so handler redirects him onto the enrichment for a few moments. He pulls mildly back to kennel and enters without issue. -
Summary (7):: 12/11/24 (Trainer Note): Giddy Up is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. Handler uses a treat to lure him through the leash and he pulls moderately to the canine training room. Giddy Up engages readily with the various enrichment, releasing tension from his body. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 12/9/24: Giddy Up was jumping up and barking at his kennel door as the handler approached. Once he was leashed, he tried to bult out of the kennel between the handlers legs. He pulled all the way to the play yard for play group. He was able to greet and play with the other dog while being held on leash with the drag lead. When the handler tried to leash him to go back to his kennel, he started leash biting and needed treats to calm down and leashed properly. He pulled on the way back to his kennel and walked in with no issues. 12/08/24: Giddy Up is standing at the front of kennel with a loose, wiggly frame as handler approaches. He jumps up on kennel door excitedly and is easily redirected to the back of kennel with tossed treats. Giddy Up is leashed and pulls mildly out to the play yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). He is social with handlers throughout and will jump up on them excitedly. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 12/7/24 Giddy Up is jumping on the kennel door and panting as the handler approaches. Treats are tossed on the floor to allow the handler to open it. Giddy Up is very wiggly as the handler attempts to leash him, sniffing the floor for more treats and anticipating exiting the kennel. He pulls mildly to the behavior room for his assessment, distracted by sounds. In the room, a collar and drag leash are easily placed on him as he is distracted with treats. Giddy Up is highly aroused, jumping on the handlers in the room, panting heavily, and being easily distracted. He plays with a toy, displaying some resource guarding when he is across the room and the handler goes to pick up the toy to toss it for him, he sprints across the room to get to the toy before the handler can pick it up. Attempting to dissuade Giddy Up from jumping, he is asked to sit and complies for treats. After his assessment, he is easily leashed and returned to

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Giddy Up so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Giddy Up's social hyperarousal, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Giddy Up began to tense when his toy was approached during his assessment. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Giddy Up's mouth, and any time something is removed, he should be rewarded with a high-value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. See handout on Resource Guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Giddy Up quickly becomes over-aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Giddy Up to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Giddy Up. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Giddy Up began to hard bark and tense when a stranger entered the staff office, but recovered fast. We recommend a slow approach and ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Giddy Up. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Giddy Up's quality of life Anxiety: Giddy Up is a bit anxious in care. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety. See handout on Generalized Anxiety.
