Spot
Hello, my name is Spot. My animal id is #246641. I am a male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/31/2026.
Spot has been placed on the At Risk list for medical reasons. He has had a URI and has subsequently not been eating for many days. His level of FAS has made it challenging to give him his needed care. He needs a low stress environment and care that we cannot provide.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Spot has been placed on the At Risk list for medical reasons. He has had a URI and has subsequently not been eating for many days. His level of FAS has made it challenging to give him his needed care. He needs a low stress environment and care that we cannot provide. What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Spot tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Standing on the sidelines will typically only get you so far, but Spot isn't entirely sure how to jump in and join. To his utmost credit, he recognizes all of our attempts as the sincere invitations they are and makes concerted efforts to respond in kind. Walking to the front of his condo perch curious and very wide eyed, Spot earnestly sniffed like he was trying to figure out everything that was happening in Adoptions. If only I could explain that there's a lot going on and he doesn't need to understand each detail, but he does need to understand that he'll find his place soon. My heart broke a bit watching Spot take it all in surprise, but it's also worth noting how many big changes Spot's been through recently. Brought to us after spending a little time in a home, we learned that he's a cat who likes to do his own thing. Spot wasn't a fan of the dogs he lived with but we know there's a family out there who will welcome him for who he is.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/2/26 FB73 Spot is laying in his den upon approach, hissing as the den cover is lifted. He leans forward to sniff the handler's hand before leaning back and squinting. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool her tolerates all petting but remains tense and leans away. 2/4/26 Vol. Spot was inside his den. He hissed several times when the den cover was lifted to get a visual, but then began to relax, blinking slowly with ears up. Uninterested in the purée treat, but allowed himself to be petted all over with the back of the tool. When offered crunchy treats, he continued to make soft eyes out from the den cover, but would not leave the den. After a short break, he was found on top of the den, and allowed petting by hand on his forehead and back of head. Seems more scared than defensive and coming along well. 2/6/26 Vol. Spot was sleeping in the main area of his castle when I approached. He did not flinch or move when I opened the door. He woke up briefly to sniff a Silvervine chew stick. He sniffed temptations offered in a cupcake wrapper but did not eat them. He feigned sleeping with forward ears, partially closed eyes and whiskers back. His body was curled up in a relaxed position. He got up and walked into the cubby when offered Churu on an extendable stick. I left the treat just outside the opening to the cubby. He turned and ate it once the main kennel door was closed. He licked his lips once and did a small swat in the air with no claws when slowly approached with a scratcher through the cubby door. He then playfully followed the movements of a peacock feather around the cubby. He lifted one paw when gentle petting with the peacock feather was attempted. I left him with the feather and a catnip ball. 2/8/26 FB32 Lying down in loaf position at back of shelf with head, ears, and body facing forward. Sniffs treats offered by hand and sniffs scratcher tool. Allows petting on the cheeks, but leans back and sniffs the tool again when pet on the head. When stroking his body, he sits up and then steps back, focused on the tool. Sniffs my hand when reaching close, then raises paw in an attempt to swat when briefly touched on the chin. Tenses up, but then relaxes and lies back down in loaf position a few seconds after closing the door at the end of the interaction. Curious, but sensitive to touch. 2/13/26 FB20 Spot seems very under the weather today. He sniffs tool but remains still throughout all petting. He is not interested in treats.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Spot has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Spot should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, timid, hides] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,No dogs
Recommendations comments:: Due to prior scratch history, an adult only home is recommended. Spot was reported by his previous owner to be afraid of the two dogs in the home. A home without dogs is recommended.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Spot is laying in his den, body tense, pupils dilated, and lip licking, backing away and hissing as the den cover is lifted. He tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool but flinches repeatedly, leaning away to avoid contact and hissing when the assessor stops petting and slowly pulls the scratcher tool out of the den. He remains tense throughout the interaction. Pickup is not attempted due to behavior. Spot tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
