Meet Maxie Waxie! Maxie Waxie came to ACC after his former family could no longer keep him due to housing challenges. He's an energetic, social guy who enjoys treats, toys, and playful engagement with his handlers. Maxie can be affectionate and fun, but the shelter environment has been stressful for him, and he's shown frustration when seeing other animals-especially dogs-pass by his kennel or while out on leash. My Ideal Home Maxie Waxie would do best with an experienced, adult-only adopter who understands leash reactivity and can provide structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement. He needs regular physical exercise and mental enrichment to help him channel his energy in healthy ways. A calm, predictable home environment will help him decompress and build confidence over time. Good with Other Pets? No other dogs or cats. Maxie Waxie has shown significant on-leash reactivity toward dogs and intense reactions toward cats, so he will do best as the only pet in the home. Leash Manners Maxie Waxie pulls on leash and can become highly focused on dogs and other animals while walking. He benefits from distance, movement, and handlers who can confidently redirect him. Continued force-free training and management tools like a front-clip harness are recommended. Other Fun Facts Loves toys and chasing thrown objects, enjoys treats, and has a playful, goofy side once engaged. Maxie Waxie is a strong, spirited dog looking for someone ready to invest in training and teamwork.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Max is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Max.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and handling sensitivity we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking, lunging, and growling towards cats while on leash we recommend a home with no cats.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Max's previous owner stated that he will have a few accidents a week. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Max is observed to become tense and move away with a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Max's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Max's previous owner stated that he will bark and growl when held/restrained and is fearful when pushed off furniture. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Max to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Max's previous owner stated that he is fearful when startled. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Max would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Max is observed to be pacing around the assessment room. If Max displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity/ Leash Pulling: Max's previous owner stated that he will hard bark growl, and lunge towards cats and dogs. They also state that Max pulls hard while on leash. During his stay in care Max is obsvered to bark and pull towards other dogs while outside. Max will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
