Pond in the care center has been deteriorating despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Pond paws and jumps at her kennel door when being removed, reactive on walks and recently has a incident with a staff member leash biting intensely and jumping towards there arms. Pond is very social with staff but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Medically, Pond is healthy at this time. Pond came into the care center as a stray. Due to this, her behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. In the care center pond she has begun to display leash biting, jumping on handlers which can escalate to jumping toward handlers' arms when she is overexcited or frustrated. Despite this she enjoys toys, engages readily in training games such as the 123 game, engage/disengage, up/down, and ping pong, and is often able to disengage from other dogs with handler support. She responds well to high rates of reinforcement, structured movement, and predictable routines. In lower-arousal settings, she demonstrates a loose, wiggly body, seeks affection, leans into contact, and settles appropriately with enrichment such as puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and chew items.Pond would benefit from a New Hope rescue placement familiar with high-arousal dogs who need structure, enrichment, and consistent positive-reinforcement training to help her safely channel her energy and succeed in a home environment.

Summary:: tail tucked, ears back, tolerated basic handling but started to growl and snap when being vaccinate
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Pond is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Pond came into the care center as a stray. Due to this, her behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. In the care center pond she has begun to display leash biting, jumping on handlers which can escalate to jumping toward handlers’ arms when she is overexcited or frustrated.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Social hyperarousal/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Pond is noted to leash bite and jump on the handler and become overly excited and mouthy towards handlers. Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression: During Pond’s medical exam, they displayed fearful behavior including a tucked tail and ears back. While they tolerated basic handling, they began to growl and snap during vaccination, indicating a potential for defensive aggression when overwhelmed. Training should focus on cooperative care, slow desensitization to handling, and building trust through positive reinforcement to reduce fear responses. Please see the handout Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression. On-leash reactivity: Pond has been noted to fixate and pull towards other dogs during walks. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-Biting: Pond was noted to grab the drag leash from the handler’s hand and run around with it during their handling assessment. This behavior may stem from overstimulation or playfulness. Training should include redirection to appropriate toys, reinforcing calm behavior, and using enrichment to manage arousal levels during handling. Please see the handout on Leash-Biting.
