Animal Profile

Sprinkle

Hello, my name is Sprinkle . My animal id is #211772. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sprinkle is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Sprinkles initially presented as loose, wiggly, and social with handlers during his initial stay in care before being adopted. His adopter returned sprinkles due to landlord issues. Since his return Sprinkle has not acclimated well despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has escalated to growling and lunging at handlers when approached in kennel, including when he has a frozen enrichment item in his kennel, hovering and guarding the item. When removed from his kennel, he begins kennel fighting with other dogs as he passes them. Staff have reported that once outside, he becomes highly reactive to various stimuli, though they were unable to specify the exact triggers due to their wide and various nature. At the end of his assessment, when the assistant bent to pick up the end of his drag leash, he began snapping at their hand. Medically, Sprinkle is apparently healthy.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Kennel presence/Resource guarding- Sprinkle is observed to growl and lunge in front of his kennel baring teeth. He will hover and growl and lunge at handlers over an enrichment treat ice block in his kennel. Basic manners/poor impulse control- Sprinkle would excited/jumpy around strangers. To improve Sprinkle's impulse control, practice basic obedience cues like "sit," "stay," and "down" in a calm environment. Gradually introduce distractions, such as strangers, and reward Sprinkle for maintaining calm behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- In the prior home it is reported that Sprinkles will snap when restrained. In the care center after the handling assessment was completed the helper went to pick up the drag lead and sprinkle quickly grew tense and quickly snapped at the helper hand. To address handling sensitivity, start with gentle desensitization exercises. Pair gentle touch with high-value treats to create positive associations. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of touch, ensuring Sprinkle remains comfortable. Practice handling exercises in short, positive sessions, and always use positive reinforcement to build trust and reduce fear. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Sprinkles is reported by staff to kennel fight and on leash reactive. Separation anxiety- Sprinkles is reported to have Separation anxiety. To help Sprinkles with separation anxiety, create a safe and comfortable space for him when you leave. Gradually increase the time he spends alone, starting with short periods and slowly extending them. Use interactive toys and puzzles to keep him occupied. Practice leaving and returning calmly to avoid making departures and arrivals a big event. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety. Low threshold for arousal-Sprinkles has a low threshold for arousal, meaning he can become overly excited or reactive quickly, especially in stimulating environments. This can lead to behaviors such as jumping, barking, or snapping when he is unable to manage his excitement. It's important to work on calming exercises and impulse control training to help him stay composed in various situations.
