Animal Profile

Chirin

Hello, my name is Chirin. My animal id is #243792. I am a female apricot dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/15/2025.

Chirin is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Chirin is not acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Chirin will display behaviors including growling, baring teeth, lunging, and digging at her kennel door in attempts to remove her and during her stay. Chirin is being treated for recurrenct CIRDC infection.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Chirin was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/17: Due to Chirin's fearfulness and higher-level warnings, handlers do not attempt to collar her. A gate greet is conducted with a novel male dog. Chirin remains fearful and avoids handlers and the other dog. She does not approach to greet the male, seeking exit after making a lap around the pen.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Kennel presence: On intake, Chirin was transported in a crate by police after the owner called to have Chirin be picked up from the home due to not wanting her anymore. The dog was transported in a crate with two handcuffs attached to either end as makeshift handles, due to Chirin actively trying to bite fingers when attempting to lift the crate without the cuffs. Upon intake, Chirin was noticeably fearful, whale eying and reserved, its full body tucked. When getting close with the lead, the dog bared its teeth and exhibited a low growl. She continued to bare her teeth when switched to a kennel. During her medical exam she is noted to growl and showing teeth in kennel; once out of the kennel, warmed up and was wagging tail, rolling over for belly rubs and tolerated all tasks and handling.Training should focus on reducing kennel stress and building trust through low-pressure approaches, treat tossing, and calm body language. Pair leash presentation with high-value rewards and allow voluntary engagement. Avoid forced handling and fast movements; progress gradually to reinforce positive associations with leashing and kennel interactions. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
