Elevator
Hello, my name is Elevator. My animal id is #237034. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/18/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormElevator is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Elevator is highly aroused. He has been observed panting, pacing, and screeching, and has difficulty settling. In his kennel, he bares his teeth and lunges when staff interact with him, even when offered treats. He remains defensive, growling at staff as they walk past. Medically, Elevator is apparently healthy.

Elevator is a ~5-year-old large mixed breed who was brought to ACC by police after his owner surrendered him, citing "aggression" toward children (no specific behaviors described). In the Care Center, he's shown very high arousal-pacing, panting, screeching-and can become defensive in-kennel. He'll need experienced support to feel safe and learn calm. My Ideal Home An experienced, adult-only home through a New Hope partner. Elevator will benefit from a quiet environment, structured routines, decompression time, and force-free, reward-based training focused on impulse control and relaxation. Daily enrichment (sniffing games, food puzzles) will help him settle. Good with Kids? Recommended no children (under 13) due to low threshold for arousal and defensive behavior in-kennel. Good with Other Pets? Dog-to-dog: in shelter he becomes tense, vocal, and may lunge with raised hackles; not suitable for dog parks. Any future intros should be slow, structured, and overseen by experienced handlers. Cat history unknown. Leash Manners Pulls and can fixate on scents or dogs; jumps/paws at the door when leashing and may be mouthy. A front-clip harness, calm handling, and reinforcement for checking-in/loose-leash walking will be key. He passes people neutrally when focused. Overall Health Vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative. Cleared as "okay for surgery"; not yet neutered.

Summary (6):: 9/28/25- Elevator is laying down at the back of his kennel sleeping when handler approaches, he slowly comes to the front with a soft body as handler unlocks his door. He is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash with a mild pull towards spots to sniff. He allows handler to pet his head, neck and back. When he sees other dogs walking up ahead he has a slight pull towards them with a medium tail. Handler calls to him but he stays focused on the other dogs. Handler tugs him away and he then come to handler, they pet him. He is taken to the park where he sniffs all around and relieves himself multiple times. Another dog comes into the park and Elevator turns and watches them with a neutral body. Handler whistles to him and he follows them, he stops intermittenly to look at the other dog. Handler just keeps walking while they whistle at him. He goes back to sniffing around, he sees a pigeon and stops to stare. He starts to pull hard towards the squirrel, handler tugs him away. When returning to the builder he walks again on a loose leash, he isn't taken any treats offered throughout the walk. He sees some pigeons and tries to chase them. Handler holds him back and crosses the street. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 9/25/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Elevator did not want to go back into kennel even for treats. 9/21/25: Elevator is at the front of the kennel jumping up persistently when the handler approaches. The handler offers a treat and attempts to lure him off the door. Elevator is not receptive, he continues jumping up on the door. As the handler is attempting to leash him, Elevator continues to jump up and paw at the door and towards the leash. He sticks his paws and his muzzle through the kennel door opening. With some difficulty the handler is able to leash him and he is taken to the yard. While in the yard Elevator is observed to become tense with raised hackles when seeing another dog. He will pulls towards them and vocalize. When another dog passess the pen he is in he lunges towards them with raised hackles and stuff tail. This behavior is not able to the redirected using treats or squeaky sounds. When returning to kennel Elevator allows the handler to clips their leash and he is returned with no issue. 9/20/25: Elevator was observed to bare his teeth and lunge, even when offered treats while in his kennel. He continued to growl when staff walked by his kennel, ignoring him. 09/19/25: Elevator is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them gently, handler begins unlocking the kennel door and Elevator begins jumping and pawing frantically at the kennel door. He is not redirected with treats and is difficult to leash due to the consistent pawing and jumping at the kennel door. He is eventually leashed and taken to the street for his walk. While outside Elevator pulls moderately but will pull hard toward spots to sniff. He walks with handler and passes people on the street without issue, when seeing dogs he will pull toward them with a tense posture and hackles slightly raised. Elevator frequently stops to sniff spots on the street and scent marks whenever he stops. He walks for a bit more before being brought back inside for his behavior assessment. Once complete he is brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on London so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Elevator's low threshold for arousal, Elevator should go to a home with adults only. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. Place with a New Hope partner: Elevator displays a low threshold for arousal and has a difficulty settling down. Due to these behaviors, he should go to a New Hope Partner that ca manage his behaviors.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: During the toy portion of his assessment, Elevator became tense. Nothing should be taken out of his mouth, an positive reinforcement should be used to teach Elevator the trade game. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Elevator's owner told officers he is "aggressive" towards her children but did not give more details. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Elevator feel comfortable around new people. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety/Low threshold for arousal: Elevator is highly anxious and has a low threshold for arousal. He has difficulty settling down. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Elevator impulse control. He will need daily enrichment to keep him occupied. Please see the handouts on General Anxiety and Low threshold for arousal. On Leash Reactivity: Elevator is observed to become tense, lunge, vocalize, and pull hard towards other dogs with a tense forward body and stiff tail. Elevator will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
