Teddy
Hello, my name is Teddy. My animal id is #241177. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/7/2025.
Teddy is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Despite our best efforts at making his comfortable Teddy has been obsvered to show signs of kennel stress. Noted to jumping up high and scale the walls of his kennel when the room is active continuously. While on leash Teddy is also noted to have a low threshold for arousal and has been obsvered to mount handlers. With handlers Teddy has a soft body and is social. Medically Teddy has diarrhea and has a wound.

What we do know: he's a smart, social guy who can be tense at first, but he warms up quickly and enjoys people. On walks he's been described as a "sweet and gentle walker," takes treats politely, checks in with his handler, and knows "sit." In the shelter, Teddy struggles to settle and can get over-aroused in the kennel-he'll pace, pant, jump up on the walls, and sometimes shred bedding, which is likely stress-related rather than who he is at home. My Ideal Home Teddy is looking for an experienced, adult-only home that can provide structure, calm routines, and positive outlets for his energy. He'll benefit from reward-based training to build impulse control (hello, "off," "place," and polite greetings!), plus daily enrichment like food puzzles, long-lasting chews, and decompression walks. A quieter home where he can unwind and learn to relax will help him thrive. Good with Kids? No. Teddy is recommended for a home without children under 13 due to his low threshold for arousal and jumpy, excitable behaviors. Good with Other Pets? Teddy has shown interest and frustration at the barrier when greeting another dog (whining/growling/pawing at the gate). He may do best as the only pet, or with very slow, carefully managed introductions and guidance from a qualified trainer. Behavior Determination Level 3 - Teddy needs an experienced adopter who can help him channel arousal into appropriate behaviors, support calm handling, and give him time to decompress from shelter stress. Other Fun Facts Teddy can be a total goof-he'll "sit" so enthusiastically he pops his front paws up in the air, and he loves sniffy walks. With the right calm home and consistent training, this sweet boy has a lot of potential to blossom.

Summary (6):: 1/5/26: Teddy is obsvered to be jumping up the walls of his kennel once the kennel room door open and persists throughout the time the kennel room is active. 12/31/25- ACS reported that Teddy is jumping around in his kennel while the room is active and can’t settle. 12/20/25: Staff note that Teddy has a hard time settling in kennel - he has been observed to jump up on the kennel walls continuously during cleaning. He was also observed to be at the front of his kennel tense, whale eye-ing, and hard panting as staff walk by. 12/14/25: Teddy is at the front of the kennel curled up at the front with a soft body. He is easily leashed and walked to the street. Teddy walks with a loose leash besides the handler, he stops to sniff various spots on the ground. Teddy takes treats gently when offered to him. He relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. Teddy is returned to kennel without issue. Once the lash is removed, Teddy begins circling in kennel and jumping up on the walls. He is left with treats and the interaction is ended.

Teddy is walked back to MACC and kennel safely. 11/11/25- Teddy is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, handler holds out a treat and he gently takes it. He is easily leashed and has a mild pull leaving the room. He is taken for a street walk and walks with a moderate pull. He occasionally hops while walking and is social with handler. They ask him to sit, he sits up right with his front paws in the air. He sniffs around and relieves himself at various spots. When people walk by he has a mild pull towards them with a soft body wanting to greet. Handler presents a treat in front of him and he comes to them taking it. While 2 people pass with carts, handler stands by the curb and Teddy keeps his attention on handler as they feed him treats. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 11/9/25: Teddy is laying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He is eager to come out of kennel and would try to shove his way out as the handler quickly leashes him. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he pull towards trees to sniff and mark his territory constantly. He had no reactions to dogs or people and is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump up on the handlers and would sniff around mark his territory. He has a tense body and would lip kick while being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel, and instantly bolts back out when placed inside. He is then muscled back into kennel and he begins to vocalize as the handler locks the door and walks away. 11/9/25: Acs reports that while out in the yard Teddy would turn towards them and mount them. The handler had to straight arm him. While in the hallway Teddy jumped towards a person and attempted to mount them.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Teddy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Teddy is obsvered to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: During intake and his medical exam Teddy had a tense body. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Teddy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Arousal: Teddy has been observed to attempt to mount handlers. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Teddy to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
