Animal Profile

Spunky

Hello, my name is Spunky. My animal id is #209393. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/5/2024.

Spunky has been placed on the at-risk list due to his deterioration in care. He has been struggling to adjust to the shelter environment, exhibiting behaviors such as jumping off the kennel walls, spinning inside and outside his kennel, and nipping at handlers' hands and hair. However, Spunky has been highly social and engaging outside of his kennel. He enjoys a variety of toys, enrichment items games, and treats. Medically Spunky is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. A volunteer writes: He's 11 months old and full of spunk and fun and all the things a dog should be full of. Spunky arrived stray 2 months ago, and the young age of 9 months. Two months later and we can't help but notice that he's growing up right before our eyes. But he's a baby yet, and a simple toy lights up his world. He high steps awkwardly around with it, as happy as can be. We are delighted to see him so thrilled, and when he briefly climbs on our laps to play we are even more so. Spunky is ready to find the home of his dreams. Some toys and a space to play, lots of love and patience as he acclimates to a regular life again. Spunky would be best as an only dog and he's waiting for you at Queens ACC.

Towards the end of the interaction, when a new handler enters the handler holds the leash and redirects Spunky onto the snuffle mat. Once he has engaged with the snuffle mat for a few seconds, he is then released. Spunky is able to approach without jumping. When handlers solicit contact, Spunky leans in. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Spunky Behavior challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. SINGLE-PET/ RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to Spunky's kennel presence when other dogs pass and his reactivity towards other dogs on walks and play group, we recommend he is the only pet in the home. We also recommend no dog parks due to his reactivity.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness-To reduce Spunky's mouthy behavior and improve his bite inhibition, redirect his attention to appropriate chew toys whenever he becomes mouthy. Over time, he will learn that gentle interactions are more rewarding. Reinforce gentle behavior with treats and praise, and consistently practice these techniques to help Spunky develop better bite inhibition and reduce mouthiness. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Handling/touch sensitivity- Increasing Spunky comfort with handling requires a slow and gentle approach. Start by introducing brief, gentle touches and gradually increase the duration as Spunky becomes more comfortable. Pair each touch with high-value treats to create positive associations with being handled. Pay close attention to his body language and always respect his boundaries; if he shows signs of discomfort, allow him to move away. Consistently using desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques will help Spunky become more comfortable with handling over time. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety- Spunky began to display heavy panting and whining during his assessment. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- To address Spunky on-leash reactivity and barrier frustration, work on desensitization and counter-conditioning. Start by exposing him to his triggers (bikes, scooters, skateboards, small animals, and unfamiliar dogs) at a distance where he remains calm. Gradually decrease the distance while rewarding calm behavior with treats. Teach Spunky alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" command when he sees a trigger. Consistent training and positive reinforcement will help reduce his reactivity over time. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling- This behavior highlights his strength and the need for training to teach him to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior. Please see handout on Strength/leash pulling.
