At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Famous

Famous is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Famous has shown high arousal and reactivity in the care center, including intense dog reactivity when leaving his kennel and on walks, uncontrollable zoomies, and repeatedly jumping onto staff. He has attempted to redirect during reactive moments, whipping around and nipping at handlers’ clothing. In sessions he displays dilated pupils, heavy panting, difficulty settling, and engages in mounting, jumping, and mouthing staff with moderate to hard pressure. Medically, Famous is being monitored for a scrotal hematoma currently but is otherwise healthy.

Misty

Misty is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Misty is apparently healthy.

Choco

Choco is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of fear aggression such as lunging, hissing, and swatting. Choco's previous owner reports he is active and playful, affectionate and friendly in a home environment. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Choco has started treatment for a moderate URI, but is difficult to manage due to behavior.

Duke Of York

Duke of York is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Oats

Oats is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his stay in the care center he has been obsvered to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to head whip back and forth with an open mouth upon contact and will jump up to bite the leash. Oats has also been noted to be dog reactive. Observed to pull hard towards other dogs with a tense body, and rear up on his hind legs. While out with handlers he is obsvered to be social and receptive to treats. Medically Oats is apparently healthy.

Titan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Titan has shown increased kennel reactivity, including hard barking, lunging at the glass, and displaying teeth when approached and is deteriorating in the care center. Although he can become loose and wiggly once coaxed for leashing, he remains aloof and tense on walks, showing whale eye and pulling strongly. Medically, Titan is overweight but otherwise healthy.

Emmy is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Her owner describes her as aloof, independent and quiet cat. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Emmy is overweight, but otherwise healthy.

Baklava

Baklava is at risk for behavioral concerns. Baklava arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon his intake, Baklava was noted to be social and wiggly bodied with staff. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Baklava has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal. Baklava has been reported to be leash biting and alligator roll with escalating intensity. At times, this is manageable with toys and treats, but he is not consistently able to be redirected. Additionally Baklava has been noted to attempt to mount handlers. With staff, Baklava continues to be social and treat motivated. Medically Baklava is apparently healthy.

Falsetto

Falsetto is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He was recently returned to the care center due to behavior concerns. His previous owner noted that Falsetto was mouthy, may snap when restrained, and often stares at other dogs. They also stated that Falsetto would guard random items and would escalate to snapping, growling, and attempting to bite. While in care Falsetto is friendly, enjoys pets, and checks in often with his handlers. Medically, Falsetto has started treatment for CIRDC.

Arrow

Arrow is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Arrow has displayed a concerning level of reactivity towards other dogs, both on leash and during an attempt at a playgroup interaction with another dog. He screeches, lunges, barks, fixates, and intermittently leash bites or thrashes on the lead as a result. While Arrow has shown social behaviors with staff and handlers, he has redirected onto a staff member twice during a walk, but did not make contact. Medically, Arrow has dental disease and is being treated for CIRDC.

Brownie

Brownie is at risk for behavioral concerns. Brownie has begun to deteriorate despite the best efforts to keep her comfortable during her stay. While Brownie has show highly social behaviors with handlers, she quickly becomes aroused and begins leash biting or will start to grab treat pouches (pulling on them once she has a hold), jacket sleeves, pants, safety tools that handler's are carrying with moderate-hard pressure; she has caught a handler's thigh and another's hand and back of their thigh, leaving some bruising. Medically, Brownie has dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

Pepper

Pepper is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Pepper has been intensely fearful and avoidant in the care center, repeatedly retreating from leashing attempts, growling, hard barking, and pacing between the front and back of her kennel. During sessions, Pepper maintains a low, tense frame with tucked tail, whale eyes, and exit-seeking behavior, skittering away from handlers and vocalizing when overwhelmed. She becomes somewhat more comfortable in the presence of familiar handlers, loosening her body and approaching for gentle treats, but remains highly sensitive to handling pressure and unfamiliar environments and is unable to complete a handling assessment. Medically, Pepper has been treated for otitis externa but is otherwise healthy.

Moose

Moose is at risk for behavior reasons. Moose is deteriorating in the shelter environment. Moose was highly fearful initially but warmed up with staff relatively quickly. Lately he has been fearful of new people, hard barking at volunteers. There was a bite incident during an interaction with handler and Moose snapped towards handler moving forward to pet him. This bite did not break the skin but left bruising. He requires slow introductions to new people. Medically, Moose has mild dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

Shanghai

Shanghai is at risk due to behavioral reasons. When Shanghai arrived in care she was observed to be highly fearful: noted to bark, growl, and lunge towards handlers. She was also observed to bark and pull towards other dogs. Overtime Shanghai has warmed up to handlers and allows handling. However, she is still noted to be fearful. Noted to walk with a low head, tail tucked and ears pinned while with handlers. Medically, Shanghai is currently healthy.

Bark Vader

Bark Vader is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Bark Vader arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Bark Vader was reported to be social with staff and allowed handling. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Bark Vader has been showing significant on-leash reactivity and has become difficult to return to kennel safely. Bark Vader is reported to pull hard to occupied kennels, and when on walks pulls hard toward dogs with tense body and is difficult to redirect. At times, Bark Vader has resisted re-entering his kennel, baulking intensely, thrashing, and head whipping when attempting to clip his leash requiring the assistance of a secondary handler. With staff he remains treat motivated. Medically, Bark Vader is being treated for CIRDC.

August is at risk due to behavioral reasons. August has been obsvered to have a tense body and whale eye. While on leash August has been obsvered to baulk in front if the kennel and escalate to thrashing and snapping at handlers. When a handler approached to use a sling August growled and bared teeth at them. Medically, August has dental disease, is overweight, and has a wound.

Phoenix

Phoenix is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Phoenix has been observed to be highly dog reactive during her stay in the care center. Noted to pull hard and vocalizes towards other dogs in the kennel room and while on the street. She has become difficult to return to kennel due to the intensity of her kennel reactivity. Also then when handlers go to leash her Phoenix has begin biting the leash. While with handlers Phoenix will engage in a game of trade. Medically, Phoenix has dental disease and is being treated for CIRDC.

Bruno

Bruno is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in the care center as well and in his previous home. Bruno has shown high arousal and frustration in the care center, including high level of leash biting during his reassessment and being unable to refocused with toys or treats. It is reported in his previous home that he growls, hard barks, and lunges toward strangers, dogs, and small animals on walks. When food, treats, or toys are handled, he becomes tense and hovers over the item, escalating to growling or hard barking when his warnings are not respected. Medically, Bruno has dental disease and apparently healthy.
