Animal Profile

Cookie Monster

Hello, my name is Cookie Monster. My animal id is #219483. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/28/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cookie Monster is at-risk due to behavioral reasons. Cookie Monster was brought to the Care Centers by the police due to a potential eviction from the home. At first during intake he was loose, wiggly, whinning, and rolling over to show belly, but he quicikly began to thrash. A harness was placed on him in an attempt to help him with his handling sensitivity, but he continued to snap at handlers and escalates to alligator rolling. Cookie Monster has also been described to be highly anxious, leading to a low arousal threshold. He displays frantic movements and dilated eyes when searching for food, grabbing treats with a moderate pressure. During staff interactions, Cookie Monster is aloof and only interacts with handlers when food is present. He is highly food motivated and can sometimes be redirected. Medically he apparently has alopecia, CIRDC, and a wound on his snout.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cookie Monster so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/30/25: Cookie Monster was reported to snap at a handler when she clipped his harness and head flip at another handler with an open mouth when she clipped his harness. He alligator roll and snapped when another staff member tried to clip his harness.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cookie Monster's behavior during his assessments, Cookie Monster should go to a home with older children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Cookie Monster be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Cookie Monster to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Cookie Monster to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity: During handling, Cookie Monster began to thrash. A harness was placed on him in an attempt to help him with his handling sensitivity, and he continued to snap at a handlers and alligator roll. Positive reinforcement should be used to help manage these behaviors. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and Handling/touch sensitivity. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Anxiety/Low threshold for arousal: Cookie Monster is highly anxious, leading to a low arousal threshold. He displays frantic movements and dilated eyes when searching for food and grabs treats with moderate pressure. Cookie Monster will need daily enrichment and will need to learn impulse control using positive reinforcement. Please see the handouts on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition, General Anxiety, and Arousal.
