Animal Profile

Srirachi

Hello, my name is Srirachi. My animal id is #243247. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/8/2025.

Srirachi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. A volunteer writes: Sriachi was found in a building hallway, which is certainly one way to start the search for a forever family, but he needed some help with direction. Thankfully a Good Samaritan noticed and checked around to see if anyone would claim this beauty. When no one did, Sriachi was scooped up and brought to us for a new chance at finding a forever family. When I met Sriachi, he was huddled in the back of his cubby, thinking his thoughts and creating some space. I understand the inclination especially after all that happened, but I offered some treats and my hand anyway. Sriachi swiftly declined, explaining that he was perfectly fine on his own with a glance back up at me as he seemed to second guess his own decision. Though I can't speak for Sriachi, I actually don't think he's perfectly fine on his own and I think he'd really like a patient family to call his own.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Srirachi was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake, Srirachi allowed all handling and to be checked for microchip.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/12/25 Vol. Srirachi looked outside of the den when I opened the kennel door. He swatted the Churu I offered him without tasting it and went back into his den. I then put Churu in a tray outside of the side den entrance and closed kennel door. Eventually, he poked his head and ate it. He slow blinked while I spoke to him softly. He sniffed a silvervine chew toy I put near the entrance of the den using an extendable stick. When I closed the kennel door, he emerged to litter box side of the double kennel. I left him with the silvervine chew stick and a little more Churu in a tray. 12/13/25 Vol. In the den box throughout interaction. Lifted cover. Looking forward sort of hunched position. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool close to portal opening. Swatted the inside of den box and made it shake a bit. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Swatted scratcher tool.  Peered head partially out of round opening. Left felt square sprayed with Feliway outside of den box.  12/14/25 Vol. Resting in den out of sight, but poked head out to peek with dilated eyes when approached. Sniffed a cup of treats but didn't eat when dropped into den. Continued to look out curiously and returned blinks with sweet talk. Remained calm while being transported upstairs and immediately came out of den to explore new kennel before settling to rest in the litter box. Later, was curled up in the back of the top cubby. Still did not eat from a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Sniffed the scratcher tool then allowed head scratches without leaning in or moving away. Leaned forward to sniff the tool when stopped, so gave more attention. 12/15/25 FB32 Crouched down at back of den, hisses and steps back when opening the door. When offering treats on the scratcher tool, he swats the tool and hisses. After pausing briefly and reaching close, he sniffs the tool and allows brief petting on the head and body before swiping his paw at the tool and retreating to the shelf. 12/16/25 Vol. Sitting in back of cubby. Hissed when kennel door was opened. No interest in eating Squeeze-ups. Swatted when I tried to give him a toy rolled in catnip. Thought he would put his swatting skills to use with the cat dancer, but he wasn’t interested. A little spicy. 12/17/25 Vol. Lying at back of cubby, with tail tucked around body and face pressed against wall. His eyes were squinty, with dilated pupils. He returned a slow blinks, but appeared tense. He did not show interest in toys. When offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, he initially hissed, then sniffed intently before pulling back. Did not attempt petting, due to apparent FAS. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to fearfulness. Counselor discretion advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Srirachi was curled up hiding at the back of the den with a tense body and wide eyes. He ignores treats offered by hand and allows petting on the head, cheeks, and body but remains still and does not engage with the attention. When reaching around his head and shoulders and attempting to rotate his body to face the side, he softly hisses, leans back, and lip licks. After giving him a few seconds to recover, he continues to tolerate more petting. Srirachi tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
