Animal Profile

Luna

Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #237297. I am a desexed female blue brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/18/2025.

Luna is at risk due to behavior concerns. Luna came to our care center as a stray. During her stay at the care center Luna has started to escalate with her leash biting when handlers attempt to leash and while on walks. It was reported when exiting for a walk Luna jumps up for both the leash and the handler's arm. Once outside the room, a second handler tosses treats on the ground while the main handler adjust Luna's harness. However, Luna jumps towards the second handler's arm once they stop tossing treats. Luna has been observed to fixate, stare, and has a tense body when seeing or hearing another dog. Staff reported she is social with handlers seeking pets and walks with a loose leash/ mild pull. Medically, Luna is apparently healthy.

She is sensitive and a little shy at first, so she appreciates slow, calm introductions to people and new places. Once she warms up she absolutely lights up - volunteers describe her as "sweet," and she delights everyone with a happy little dance when it's time for a walk or a treat. She'll do best with extra patience and gentle handling as she builds trust. My Ideal Home A calm, patient household where Luna can be given time to settle in and feel safe. A predictable routine, gentle praise, and plenty of positive-reinforcement training will help her confidence. Homes without very young children are preferred; someone who enjoys short, pleasant walks and has the willingness to do slow introductions to people and other animals will help her thrive. Good with Kids? Not recommended for very small children. Luna could be open to older, calm kids after meeting them and seeing how she responds - she does best with gentle, respectful interactions and slow introductions. Good with Other Pets? Her history with other animals is unknown. Shelter staff recommend slow, supervised introductions to resident pets so she can acclimate at her own pace. She may do well with a calm, confident dog companion after proper introductions. Leash Manners Luna shows lovely leash manners and is eager for walks - she even "dances" with joy when it's time to get leashed up. She responds well to treats and gentle guidance, and will benefit from continued positive-reinforcement training. Behavior Determination Best for patient adopters who are comfortable with shy or sensitive dogs. She will do well with someone willing to move at her pace, provide positive reinforcement, and help her build confidence through slow, predictable introductions.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Luna so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13):: Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During her previous stay Luna FKA Madam Mystic was observed to growl towards handlers while in care. And was observed to retreat from exuberant contact. While in foster Luna was obsvered to bark and charge towards the FP partner when they entered the room. It is important to move slowly with Luna, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Luna has been obsvered to fixate, stare, and has a tense body when seeing or hearing another dog. Luna will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Luna has been obsvered to jump up and bite the leash. Luna is quick to grab the leash in their mouth. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
