Animal Profile

George

Hello, my name is George. My animal id is #149929. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/8/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

George is at risk due to behavior concerns. George was reported by his owner to hard bark at people and will hard bark and growl at unfamiliar dogs. In the Care Centers, George is anxious, displaying displacement behaviors, repeatedly shaking off, and panting. Recently, he hard barked at passing dogs while in the pens and mounted the handler out of frustration. Medically, George has malocclusion so his upper and lower jaw don't align properly. This does not hinder him from normal activity.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time. A volunteer writes: Ghost came to us with lovely owner notes -- shy at first, but friendly and affectionate once he warms up; played nicely at the dog park; was relaxed around the cat who visited; and knows the cues for sit, come, down, and shake/give paw -- but he's been too overwhelmed at the shelter to fully be himself. (He also has separation anxiety). When we go out, the poor little guy literally shakes with fear and startles even at the sparrows flying and hopping around nearby. But I'm starting to see what a friendly little Ghost he really is. He now gently wags and wiggles up to me -- showing off his adorable little underbite -- and softly leans in as I give him back and (especially) butt scratches. He tries to hop up on the bench with me but only gets half his body on it...so he lays his front legs across my lap, snuggling his head into my arms, and soaks up all the attention I shower on him. Our little snaggle-toothed friend was surrendered when his lifelong family relocated. He'd love to be part of a family again and is hoping his dream comes true.

Summary:: PREVIOUS STAY: 8/30/22: While off-leash at the Care Center, George is introduced to a novel female dog. He nervously approaches her, sniffing her briefly before walking away. CURRENT STAY: 9/10/24: George greets another dog at the gate with neutral body. He stares intently at the other dog. He is easily called away.

Summary (6):: 9/14/24: George is sitting in the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He moves forward and begins barking and jumping at the kennel door, when offered treats he takes it before continuing to bark and jump. When leashing he faintly attempts to bite the leash and softly moths it before allowing handler to leash and after successfully leashing George is brought to the street for his walk. While outside George is generally aloof and is hyper vigilant, looking around sporadically and scanning the street. George will flinch or lower his body if he hears a loud noise or if handler moves too quickly. He does not take treats on the street but will walk past people on the street without issue. After a bit George is brought back, upon reaching the elevator he pancakes and lays near handlers feet until reaching the second floor and walks back to kennel. Once he reaches kennel he attempts to pull back and has to be coaxed inside. 09/6/24- A staff member reported that George was barking at a dog and they were sitting on the bench. George turned and started to hard mount the handler. They stood up and he continued, handler had to pull him away he then stopped. 08/22/24: George is at front of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches . He avoids the kennel rope a couple times , but handler manages to leash him and bring him out to the play yards. He is put on a drag line, sniffs around, relieves himself, and shook off multiple times. He maintained a neutral body with a flagging tail. George would approach handler on the bench and stretched his neck when scratched around collar area. He began panting towards the end of his walk and was trotting around the yard. He was easily clipped, on his return to kennel he balked and dug his paws into the ground as we were approaching his door. Leash pressure, coaxing, and body momentum was used to get him in kennel.

Summary (7):: 8/11/24; George is at the front his kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel without issue. He pulls lightly on leash outside on the street. He does not react to any stimuli. During his assessment, he will do displacement behaviors such as randomly jumping on handler after previously backing away from them before doing a shake-off. He is returned to his kennel without issue 4/29/24: George is at the front of the kennel with a tense body, whale eyeing the handler. He does not take treats and backs away as the handler opens the kennel and presents the leash. He comes forwards after a moment and sniffs the leash, flinching as the handler puts the loop over his head. He is taken for a street walk where he pulls mildly, aloof to the handler, and does not take treats. He is hypervigilant and flighty, flinching and avoiding any stimuli that pass by or make loud noise (cars, people, dogs, pigeons). He is not easily redirected. He is taken for his assessment where he is still tense, slightly wagging his tail. He allows some touching on his back but does not allow the handler to collar him (flinching, whale eyeing, rapidly backing away, and head flipping). Handlers decide against assessment at this time and he is returned to kennel without issue. 4/27/24: George is laying in his kennel with neutral body. He sits up but does not come forward. He is not interested in treats. Handler leans into leash but Ghost moves his head away. A staff member is cleaning a neighboring kennel and makes a banging sound. George moves forward with tense body and head low. Handler is able to leash him. He comes out readily with fearful body language, moving slow through the halls. Out on the street he is hypervigilant and keeps pulling to come back to the shelter. He goes back into kennel without issue.

We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Ghost.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to George's fearful behavior noted and his overall anxiety we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: George has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful//potential for defensive aggression: George is reported to hard bark and growl at people when they enter the home. Positive reinforcement should be used to help him associate people with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful//potential for defensive aggression Separation Anxiety/Anxiety: George is reported to experience separation anxiety in his first home environment and have general anxiety in his recent home, no further details. During his assessment George was observed to jump up frantically on handlers, and pace around the room, and whine persistently. Please see handouts on Separation Anxiety and General Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: George will bark at large dogs and bikes/scooters while on leash. Positive reinforcement should be utilized to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
