Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history
Date of assessment:: 1/28/2025
Summary:: Petal is highly fearful, hiding, freezing, tensing up and whale eyeing.. She refused to allow the handler to collar her and did not want to leave her kennel. Due to these behaviors, Petal will not get a handling assessment.
Summary:: 2/4/25: Petal greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and low tail. He remains at the gate sniffing the other dog.
Summary (7):: 2/12/25: Petal is towards the back of his kennel when the handler approaches. He briefly comes forward, before retreating back. Treats are tossed which he ignores, trembling slightly on his kurunda bed. He does not move when the handler attempts to lassoo, and once successfully leashed he exits the kennel without issue. He walks with a tense body, slightly hunched and with a tucked tail. He is easily led to the yard, pausing once, but able to be redirected and change directions to avoid an oncoming dog without any issue. When entering the yard, he relieves himself, and then walks around following the handler, remaining tense and hunched/fearful but not overly vigilant. He is not receptive to treats , but does stay close to the handler and does not seem to seek exit. easily returned to the building, and enters his kennel without issue. 2/11/25: Petal is observed to remain tense and fearful while out with handler. He is placed on a dragline, he is tense and avoidant of the handler. The handler crouches down, tosses treats and attempt to coax him forward. Petal is not receptive. He remains tense body, tail tucked with one paw raised. 1/30/25: Petal is laying at the back on his bed. Initially when handler approached, he begins to get up and steps forward. However, when handler opens the door slightly he lays back down on his bed. Handler tosses treats but he is not interested. Cheese slices are tossed and he eats them when handler moves away from his kennel. He can not be coaxed forward and interaction is ceased. 1/28/25- Petal was at the front of his kennel with a tense body and shaking when handler approaches, he is easily leashed and slowly exits the kennel. He is taken for a street walk, when walking into the small garage he sits. Handler applied pressure to his leash and he got up following the handler. He walks on a loose leash next to or behind the handler. He is hypervigilant (looking around wide eyed, tail low, ears pinned) He doesn't sniff or interact with his surrounds while being aloof with handler. They offers treats but Petal shows no interest in them. He is taken for his assessment where he remains aloof with handlers and avoids any contact with either. He avoids collaring and goes behind first handler. Handlers ended interaction to not further stress Petal. He was easily clipped and was returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Petal so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how fearful Petal is, Petal should go to a home with older children. Place with a New Hope partner: Petal has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Petal is highly fearful, and avoids staff and hides. He tenses up when staff attempt to touch him. He doesn't escalate, choosing to move away. Positive reinforcment should be utilized to help Petal feel comfortable around perople. Please see the handout on Decompression.
