Animal Profile

Neda

Hello, my name is Neda. My animal id is #241738. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Neda is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/18/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with her pupils dilated and her fluffy tail wrapped tightly around her body. Neda tensed further as I lifted her den cover and she tolerated petting along her head and body with the scratcher tool while squinting her eyes, leaning away and flattening her ears. She leans back forward and sniffs the catnip toy curiously when I place it in her den. Needs more time to adjust. 11/21/25 FB58 In den and hidden from view, food appears untouched and she needs a cage cover. When the den cover is lifted, she is sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, moves to the back of the den and lip licks. She is tolerant of touch with the scratcher tool and sniffs it. I place chicken in the den with her and end the interaction to not overwhelm her. 11/25/25 FB06 Neda was tucked in her den out of view. As I lifted the den cover, she is at the back of the den with forward ears, wide eyes and lip licking. I offer her the scratcher and she leans slightly to sniff it but then turns her head away to avoid it. I remove the scratcher, add chicken to the end and offer her that. She turns her head to sniff, turns away from it and then turns back to the chicken still lip licking and hisses. I left the chicken outside the den for her to enjoy later. 11/28/25 FB58 in her den and hidden from view, she cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to. She then lunges and swats at the den door as I am removing the den cover as she hisses. When the scratcher tool is introduced, she attempts to bite the tool and hisses with a tense face and body, eyes wide. I leave her some treats but don't push for more of an interaction, instead grabbing and placing a cage cover 12/2/25 FB06 Neda was in her den out of view. As I lifted the den cover she hissed and lunged. She has wide eyes and is lip licking. I offer her the scratcher as she is crouched down at the back of the den lip licking. She tolerated a few pets on her backside as she turns her face away to the corner. 12/4/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face hidden from view. She does not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opens. When I place a squeeze-up tray next to her den opening she reaches her paw out and swats the squeeze-up tray into the air. Very nervous girl - I do not push further interaction at this time. 12/09/25 & 12/16/25 FB06 Similar behaviors as the previous entry. 12/18/25 FB61 In cat den, body and face tense with her ears flat. She pokes her head out to watch me as I open the kennel door and she hisses/lunges towards me when I attempt to offer her treats. VERY scared - displaying extreme defensive/offensive behaviors at this time. She does, however sniff the catnip toy offered with her ears forward and her face softening. I bet she played with it when I left the room ;) - GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Carrier aversion

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 11/24/25 Neda was in her cat den as the assessor approached, body and face completely hidden from view. Neda did not respond when spoken to and she hissed as the kennel door opened. Neda remained in her den as the kennel door opened and she hissed again as the kennel door opened. Neda tolerated petting along her head and back for a moment within her den before she turns and swats at the assess-a-hand. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 12/24/25 Upon re-eval, Neda continues to display New Hope Only behaviors and now no longer is tolerant of approach or touch. On approach, Neda is in her den and completely hidden from view. When the cage door is opened, she can be heard hissing and growling and reaches out from inside the den to swat multiple times with significant force. The interaction is ended and pick up is not attempted. Neda is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
