Daniels
Hello, my name is Daniels. My animal id is #230323. I am a male silver dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Daniels is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Daniels has demonstrated low threshold for arousal and handling pressure, with rapid escalation when overstimulated. He has been reported to bark and lunge at strangers, and during interactions outside has quickly become highly aroused jumping repeatedly on handlers and mouthing with moderate pressure despite redirection attempts. In-kennel, Daniels has begun leash biting during leashing attempts, though he is currently able to be refocused with treats and toys inconsistently. Medically, Daniels has CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary (7):: 12/31/25: Daniels is at the front of his kennel laying down, gets up slowly and coughs. Daniels is coaxed with treats through the leash, eats the treats but spits them out but is easily removed from kennel. Daniels pull mildly outside, but will pull hard towards spots he wants to sniff. Daniels will respond when called over, and is pet lightly and in short burst every so often due to his arousal concerns. Daniels does not react to any dogs that pass, and is easily put back into kennel after his walk with no issue. 12/21/25 (staff report): It is reported that Daniels is leash biting when staff go to leash him in kennel. At this time, he is easily refocused with treats and toys. "I Grab My Leash" and "Leash Me w/ Treats and Toys" signage has been added. 12/17/25: Daniels is at the back of his kennel laying down when the handler approaches, is easily leashed and walked out of his kennel with no issue. Daniels pulls hard outside and explores his surroundings, and does lean in for petting but becomes aroused very quickly, jumping on the handler repeatedly and mouthing the handlers hands with moderate pressure. Daniels is refocused with a treat scatter which he follows but does not eat. Daniels will continues pulling back to the care center and easily placed in kennel. 12/12/25: Daniels is noted on the board to bark and lunge at strangers. 12/10/25: Daniels is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. When exiting, he bolts out, attempting to eat the enrichment left for his neighboring dog. He is escorted to the assessment room, where he displays high arousal, jumping on handlers with no manners. He does not escalate further when running, allows handling despite heavy panting, does not react to knocking, and grabs the toy and holds it while remaining aroused. Daniels is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. See Behavioral Assessment for more information.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: During Daniels handling assessment when shown the novel plush toy on the 1st past body blocks 2nd pass body blocks/grumbles toy 3rd pass mouths dummy hand walks away.Training should focus on desensitization and counter-conditioning by pairing approach with high-value treats, practicing “trade-up” exercises, and reinforcing calm behavior when items are handled. Sessions should remain low-pressure and gradually increase proximity and duration. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: In the prior home Daniels is noted to Jumps up often-/non-stop and become Mouthy when taking treats. In the care center to pace, display a flushed face, and open mouth heavy panting and is unable to settle , he jumps on handlers and will become mouthy. Training should include structured impulse-control exercises such as “sit,” “wait,” and “leave it,” combined with calm handling and frequent reinforcement for four-on-the-floor behavior. Redirect mouthiness to appropriate chew items and use short, low-arousal sessions to prevent overstimulation. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Daniels is noted to pace, display a flushed face, and open mouth heavy panting and is unable to settle. A training plan should incorporate calming techniques such as enrichment activities, scent work, and decompression walks in low-stimulus environments. Gradual exposure to triggers paired with positive reinforcement will help reduce stress and improve coping skills. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Daniels is noted to barka nd lunge at strangers. Recommended interventions include using secure equipment such as a front-clip harness, maintaining distance from triggers, and reinforcing focus on the handler with high-value treats. Incorporating impulse-control exercises like “watch me” and “leave it” can help reduce reactivity. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting: Daniels is noted to leash bite but is able to be distracted with toys. To manage this, continue redirecting leash-biting to appropriate toys, reinforce calm walking behavior, and keep sessions short and positive. Gradual desensitization to leash pressure and impulse-control training will further improve behavior. Please see the handout on Leash-biting. Strength/leash pulling: Daniels sis noted to hard pull while on the leash. Begin with short sessions using high-value treats to reward walking beside the handler, combined with stop-and-go or direction-change techniques to discourage pulling. Consistency and reinforcement for calm leash behavior will be key. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
