Kyrie
Hello, my name is Kyrie. My animal id is #243864. I am a male apricot dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 10 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/28/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Date of assessment:: 12/31/2025
Summary:: 12/30: Due to intake's bared teeth and lunged at staff and attempted to bite staffs arm, a handling assessment will not be attempted at this time.
Summary (7):: 1/4/26: Kyrie was at front of kennel as handler approached. He had a tense body and licked his lips several time as handler unlocked kennel. He was easily leashed using a treat lure and escorted for an outside walk. He saw a dog being walked in the other direction as we exited the building and kept turning to face the other dog. Using treats redirected him for a time, but then he would go back to staring. After approx 25feet he lost interest and focused on where he was being directed. Kyrie was returned to kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Kyrie be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats Kyrie is noted to lunge at cats. We recommend that he placed in a home with no cats or small animalls due to trying to chase small animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Kyrie came into the care center as an owner surrender due to becoming mouthy and knocking over the child in the home. During intake, Kyrie attempted to bite a staff member when the leash was repositioned. Kyrie has a reported bite history in the home, including a bite-and-release incident involving a child during a resource-related situation, as well as additional prior bite with limited details. While he can be redirected with food and is able to walk appropriately once engaged, he may fixate on dogs and needs distance and guidance to disengage. Kyrie would benefit from a calm, a home with experienced handlers who can manage fear-based behaviors, avoid confrontational interactions, and continue positive reinforcement work around handling, resources, and triggers. Kyrie is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Kyrie is noted in the prior home to guard stolen objects such he is noted to growl and hard bark.Training should focus on trade-up exercises, teaching “drop it,” avoiding direct confrontation over items, and reinforcing calm behavior around valued objects. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: In the prior home Kyrie is noted to jump up often and become mouthy.Recommended strategies include reinforcing calm greetings, redirecting mouthing to appropriate toys, and implementing impulse-control exercises such as “sit,” “wait,” and structured training sessions. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: On intake, Kyrie is noted to display whale eyes and a stiff body. Staff tried to readjust the slip leash that the client placed on him. Kyrie bared teeth and lunged at staff and attempted to bite staffs arm. Staff was able to redirect and walked him to medical without issue. Once in the kennel leash was removed with the assistance of the hook which led to him growling and hard barking at staff. A slow, low-stress approach, counter-conditioning to leash handling, and predictable routines are recommended to reduce fear-based reactivity. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Handling/touch sensitivity: Kyrie is noted when Held/restrained,Startled, Collar grabbed/touchedto Barks/Growls, Fearful. When Disturbed while resting/sleeping,Pushed/pulled off furniture will become Fearful.Training should include gradual desensitization to touch, cooperative care exercises, avoidance of sudden handling, and use of high-value reinforcement to build positive associations. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human): On 11/20/25 the owner's child was trying to get Kyrie away from the garbage and was trying to retrieve the carrots that thay had been sharing with both. Kyrie began to Growled, hard barked, and/or snarled. The bite was a bite and released and the bite left a scrape. Owner noted that Kyrie has bitten in the past no details were given. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: With stranger, Kyrie is noted in the prior home to be Playful, Alert barks, Lunges. With unfamiliar dogs on leash he will be playful and alert bark, unfamilair off leash dogs he is noted to alert bark. Kyrie is noted on walks become very alert and want to follow or chase Small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.), Cats.Training should include desensitization and counter-conditioning to people and dogs at safe distances, reinforcing calm behavior, and using management tools like a front-clip harness to improve control. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
