Animal Profile

Sumi

Hello, my name is Sumi. My animal id is #242094. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 11/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sumi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/2/25 FB06 Sumi has a neutral face and eyes, ears are forward, and body is loose as I approach. She is jumping up and down from the ledge and pacing around the kennel. As I open the door she is up on the ledge. I offer her the scratcher. She enjoys all pets with the scratcher as she begins to rub herself on it and leaning into the pets. Petting her lower back, she lifts it and her tail goes high. She allowed me to give her some head pets with my hand. 12/04/25 FB61 Hunched in of kennel, body and face slightly tense with her tail curled around her feet. She watches me with a neutral expression as I open the kennel door and she tolerates petting along her head and body with the scratcher tool while leaning in and turning her head to watch the scratcher. She eats the treats offered after our session has ended. Sweet girl - just a bit shy and focused on the room. Has potential! 12/09/25 FB06 Sumi was pacing back and forth at the front of the kennel with neutral face and eyes, ears forward, a loose body and tail, soliciting attention. As I opened the kennel door I offer her my hand and she enjoys head pets as her front body is crouched down and her back end and tail are high in the air. Petting her along her backside, her back arches into the pets and her tail is high. As I touch along one spot on her back, her tail begins to vibrate with each pet. 12/11/25 FB20 Sumi exhibited similar behaviors to the previous enrichment note. 12/16/25 FB06 Jumping down from the ledge as I am opening the kennel door, Sumi has a neutral face and eyes, loose body and high tail as she starts pacing back and forth soliciting attention. I offer her my hand and she immediately nudges for pets. As i pet along her back, her tail end goes up in the air and she topples over. I then switched to the scratcher and she enjoyed all petting. She didn't show any signs of overstimulation after petting for a few minutes. 12/18/25 FB61 Today Sumi allowed all petting with the scratcher tool while leaning in, arching her back, raising her tail and making eye contact with soft eyes. Sumi is showing social behaviors in the shelter, however due to her bite history she will remain available for rescue. Sumi does not need further socialization at this time. 12/28/25 FB79 Today Sumi was very cute; she stood up when she seen me approach her kennel and had a high swaying tail. She lowered her head soliciting head pets and rolled over onto her side and back when i pet up her back and around her body. She remained playful with a swaying tail and rolling around enjoying pets. She was coaxed up and started to pace back and forth from the cubby and kennel while also head bunting the assessors and that was held out. She was bale to ne picked up with no issues. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Affectionate,People oriented,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Previous multiple bite/scratch incident with 2 individuals on 11/19/25: Owner called stating her 2-year-old cat Sumi scratched and bit her and her 18-year-old son last night around 8 pm. She was bit and scratched all over her body, she received 7 stitches in her left arm. Her son was bit in his private area also. They were seen last night at New York Presbyterian hospital. Owner states Sumi was spayed 5 days ago and was fine. At the time of the incident, owner states the cat was in the room by itself and when she went back in, she couldn't find the cat and Sumi just attacked her. ARS Notes: On scene, upon entrance in the room, the cat seemed apprehensive and showed signs of aggression and began hissing. Using a freeman net, was able to get the cat and then transferred it to a cat kennel. The owner said the cat's litter box and food was placed in the same area, in the kitchen. Owner stated the cat is normally playful and would scratch, but until recently, the cat began biting and scratching aggressively - the cat injured the owner and her son, sending them to the hospital. 11/28/25 At the time of her assessment, Sumi presents with social and curious behaviors as she comes down to the front of the cage on her own and accepts pets along her face and body, leaning into the touch with her ears forward and tail raised. After prolonged pets, during which she is purring, she shows some minor signs of a potential for overstimulation (line of pilo-erect fur along the ridge of her back and a slightly pilo-erect tail), but does not escalate. However, due to the severity of the bite/scratch incident with multiple bites/punctures, two victims, and no discernable triggers - placement with a rescue seems to be the most appropriate pathway at this time. Notes state that "the cat is normally playful and would scratch, but until recently, the cat began biting and scratching aggressively" but a specific time frame was not given. The Behavior Profile collected by Field Staff also appears to indicate a cat that does not do well around most humans (which is at odds with behaviors witnessed in shelter, and what may have been Sumi's initial behavior before this "switch" occurred.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Sumi would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Sumi is sitting up on the shelf in her cage with a neutral face and body, ears forward. She sniffs the hand offered out to her and accepts pets along her head, cheeks and body with the scratcher tool as she leans into the touch and raises her hips up into pets along her back. She is easily coaxed down to the front of the cage and continues to accept pets with both the tool and the assessor's hand (wearing bite gloves), eventually laying on her side and continuing to solicit pets as she purrs. After prolonged pets, she shows some minor signs of a potential of overstimulation (pilo-erect ridge along her back and slightly pilo-erect tail) but does not escalate. She is tolerant of being lifted up and placed back down. 12/31/25 Sumi continues to show level 2 behavior in our shelter. She leans in for petting and tolerates pick up. However, due to the severity of the bites in her previous home, the behavior team must recommend she gets placed through rescue. See "potential challenges" for more information. Although she is tolerant of all petting and handling, based off of the home notes as well as the severity of the bite/scratch incident with multiple bites/punctures (some in very sensitive areas), and with an unknown trigger - placement through rescue seems to be the most appropriate pathway at this time.
