Pre-Screener Form

Brick is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Brick arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Despite efforts to make Brick comfortable, Brick has only allowed minimal handling. Brick has been observed to thrash on leash, and at times growl at handlers that approach him. Brick has been receptive to treats and recently handlers have been successful in taking him out for walks; however Brick continues to show high levels of fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) in the shelter. Medically, Brick is apparently healthy.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 1/1/2026

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history

Date of assessment:: 1/5/2026

Summary:: Brick has been obsvered to be highly fearful during his stay. Noted to baulk and thrash on leash and have a tense body. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Brick is not a candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary (5):: 1/9/26: Brick is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and slow wagging tail. The handler feeds him treats which he takes, but as they attempt to leash him, Brick backs away from the front, even as treats are present. He then quickly eats the treat and presses his head against the kennel door, attempting to flee. After a few tries, the handler is able to leash and bring him out the room, into the yard. Brick is walked around the perimeter of the yard, and does so with mild leash tension. The handler brings him into a pen, where he relieves himself and sniffs around. Brick then climbs and sits on the bench. As he looks at the handler, the handler gives him treats, which he takes and eats. Then, the handler sits down next to him, and begins to pet him. When they stop, Brick turns and looks at them, and as they pet him, Brick looks away. While being in the yard, Brick notices another, but doesn't react to him. After a few minutes, the handler clips their leash and brings Brick inside, returning him to kennel with ease.

Summary (6):: 1/6/26: Brick is laying at the back of his kennel and remains there as handler unlocks the door. Treats are tossed in close to him and he eats them. Treats are tossed at the front of the kennel and he comes forward to engage with them. When leash is presented he retreats to the back and will not eat treats that are near the leash. Spray cheese is sprayed along the bottom of the kennel door and he comes to get the cheese but retreats and does not come forward when leash is presented. He will back away from leash when handler attempts to leash him while engaging with treats. After repeating the above behavior the leash is finally secured and he comes out of kennel readily. He is walked in the yard, neutral body, low hanging tail and wide eyes. He looks back and handler frequently and is moves along with them if they go in a different direction. He stands outside of his kennel and goes in once treats are tossed.

Summary (7):: 1/5/26: Brick is laying in the middle of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler tosses treats and Brick is receptive eating the treats slowly. The handler tosses treats closer to the kennel door and Brick approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the yard where he sniffs around. While in the yard Brick is not receptive to treats and becomes tense when the handler initiates contact. When returning to kennel the handler is able to clip their leash. He pauses in front of the kennel, the handler tosses treats and Brick readily enters. 01/03/26: Brick is near the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is tense and stares at handler but when offered treats, accepts them and loosens in posture slightly. Handler notices he is still eating his food so they leave him to finish his food before continuing the interaction. When they return Brick is finished eating but becomes tense once again once a second handler arrives to shadow Bricks interaction. He moves to the back of kennel low growling as handler attempts to lasso him. After a few attempts he is successfully leashed and lets out a single hard bark before handler tugs him out of kennel. He walks forward momentarily before baulking suddenly and thrashing on leash for a bit. Handler stops and waits for him to finish and once he does he lays on the floor, handler attempts to coax Brick forward out of the kennel room while his kennel is cleaned using treats and squeakers which he ignores. He eventually stands and walks with handler out to the yard for his walk. Throughout the interaction Brick will respond to leash pressure by slightly head whipping. He walks with handlers with a tucked tail and walks around the perimeter of the yard for a bit. He sniffs inside the play yards as well and will frequently stop and stare at the second handler. He walks for a while before being brought back inside, at the threshold of the doorway he again begins to thrash, handler waits till he stops then continues walking with him. He does this again when going back into the kennel room and again handler waits till he stops and waits till he is ready to continue walking. He returns to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Brick so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Handling/touch sensitivity/ leash biting: While attempting to walk Brick during his intake, Brick was observed to vocalize, thrash, bite the slip lead and pancake. Brick seems sensitive with slip leads and will need a slow approached. Positive reinforcement should be used to help him associate novel handling with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Decompression, Handling/touch sensitivity and leash biting.
